ASSIGNMENT OF SERIAL NUMBERS TO AIR FORCE EQUIPMENT Thil-l regulation establishes the requirement for identifying, by unique serial numbers, individual items of repa rable equipmen

2、t, engines, and propulsion systems. This regulation applies to all items of Air Force equipment, except those specifically exempted herein. This regulation applies to all Air Force activities. 1. Air Force Policy. Serial numbers are needed to identify individual items of equipment, within nation al

3、stock number (NSN), or other groups of like items for accounting, reporting, controlling, etc. Therefore, except as exempted in paragraph 5, serial numbers must be assigned to all items of equipment, engines , and proulsion systems that have recoverability or repairability designator code D“ or “F“

4、assigned ac cording to AFR 66-45. Other categories of equipment need not have serial numbers assigned. 2. Terms Explained: a. Base Number. The first part of a serial number. It consists of one to six digits. The digits may be the fiscal year of contract or manufacture; a contract identification; ser

5、vice ownership (Air Force); equip ment family group, type, model, or series designator; or any combination of these. The base number does not change when a unit is modified, if the unit can be restored to its original configuration. b. Equipment. F or the purposes of this regulation, equipment means

6、 an item that retains its identity in use, is not consumed in use, and does not become part of a larger assembly when used. An item does not lose its identity just because it is placed in a common housing with other items of equipment. F or example, pieces of test equipment installed in a relay rack

7、 even though the entire assembly may be s eparately identified. If the equipment can be removed and used independently or in other assemblies, it must have a serial number assigned. c. Equipment Family. A group of equipment items related in application, use, or design; for example, support equipment

8、 (SE). d. Recoverability or Repairability Designator Code. The second position of the three digit expendability, recoverability, repairability category (ERRC) code, which establishes the condemnation Supersedes AFR 67-35, 2 December 1969. The recoverability or repairability designator “D“ indicates that

10、 an item cannot be con demned below depot level. F“ indicates that an item can be condemned below depot level. e. Sequence Number. A number indicating the or der in which individual units that have common base numbers are identified according to this regulation. The word “sequence“ does not necessar

11、ily refer to the order of manufacture. The sequence number is four digits in length and must be all numeric. f. Serial Number. A number assigned to a repara ble item of equipment to identify a family relationship (form, fit and (unction) and an individual unit within a family. A complete serial numb

12、er consists of a base number and a sequence number. The serjal number may be up to 10 digits in length. 3. Responsibilities for Assigning Serial Numbers: a. Air Force Logis tics Command (AF LC) and Air Force Systems Command (AFSC) must state in con tracting documents that serial numbers must be as s

13、igned to all items of equipment, engines, and propul sion sys tems according to this regulation. Serial numbering instructions must state that each item be marked according to MIL-STD-130, “Identification Marking of US Military Property.“ J.f possible, the contracting activity determines the range o

14、f serial numbers to be assigned to the quantity of items or dered and advises the supplier to use those numbers on the equipment. b. The item manager (AFM 67-1, volume I, part Two) must assign and attach serial numbers to un numbered equipment items that have been shipped to the Air Force for depot

15、stock or shipped directly to Air Force bases. Care will be used to ensure that se rial numbers are not duplicated within the same NSN. 4. Format and Construction of Serial Numbers. Specific guidance on how to make up serial numbers for certain types of equipment is as follows: a. Aerospace vehicles-

16、according to AFSC DAR Supplement 20-5000. b. Support equipment-according to Technical Or der (TO) 00-25-215. This category of equipment was formerly known as aerospace ground equipment (AGE). 17、 I Trainers-according to TO 43-1-1. d. Engines and propulsion systems-according to MIL-STD-1559. e. Vehicles-according to AFM 77-310. f. Medical equipment-according to AFM 167-240. g. Parachutes. The base number must consist of the letters “USAF“ followed by a dash, then the last two digits of the f

18、iscal year of manufacture followed by another dash. After the second dash will be the se quence number. The sequence number begins with “0001“ as the first item made in the new fiscal year. Each item made during that year must be numbered in sequence. At the beginning of the new fiscal year, the seq

19、uence number must begin again at “0001,“ and the fiscal year that is part of the base number will change. h. Ground Communications-Electronics-Meteoro-logical (CEM) Equipment. Individual items and sets must be assigned serial numbers of six digits. The base number must be the latter of: (1) Fiscal y

20、ear of procurement fund obligation; or (2) Fiscal year in which the serial number is as signed. Sequence numbers must begin with “0001“ and run consecutively through the fiscal year, start ing over with “0001“ in the new fiscal year. Other equip ment items not specifically exempted from serial numbering, according to this regulation, and compo nents of serial numbered equipment must be assigned an eight-digit serial number. The base number must contain

22、four digits. The first two indicate the Federal Supply Group in which the item is classified. The last two are the final two digits of the fiscal year in which procurement funds were obligated. Sequence num bers must begin with “0001“ and run consecutively within each group of identical base numbers

23、. 5. Exemptions to Policy: a. Commercial equipment items, except as set forth in AFR 67-35, paragraph 4, marked with manufac turers serial numbers, such as household appliances, office equipment, etc. The Air Force item manager may direct serial numbering in some cases (see AFM 67-1, volume I, part

24、Two, chapter 2). b. Items managed in the Serialized Control and Re porting System (SCARS). Serial numbers assigned for SCARS management are exempt from those for mats prescribed for equipment items (see AFM 67-1, volume I, part One, chapter 13).
