23、nsional parameters. These parameters may affect the ability to join or connectorizeoptical fiber ribbons due to either misalignment of optical fibers or dimensionalcompatibility of the ribbon structure with associated ribbon hardware and terminationequipment such as ribbon holders, or chucks, used w

24、ith mass fusion splicers, or massmechanical splices and connectors.1.2 ScopeThis test procedure provides for measurement of ribbon dimensional parameters. Someor all of these parameters may be important to users of optical fiber ribbon depending onthe application. These parameters are discussed in A

25、nnex A. This procedure provides forcomparison of a ribbon specimen to specified dimensional limits, and is intended forapplication toward all ribbon designs (e.g., edge-bonded, encapsulated, composite, etc.).It is suggested that the ribbon dimensional parameters be derived either from thedifferences

26、 among the cladding edges of the fibers, or from the ribbon individual fibercenters for maximum precision.1.3 BackgroundOptical fiber ribbon structures are capable of being joined as a unit by mass fusionsplicing, mass mechanical splicing, or mass connectorization. These splicing andconnectorization

27、 methods rely typically on fixed v-grooves or ferrules for alignment ofoptical fibers from the ribbon. Thus, the dimensions and alignment of optical fibers withinthe ribbon may be critical to compatibility with fiber alignment systems. Additionally,dimensions of the ribbon matrix itself may be impor

28、tant in assuring compatibility withassociated hardware such as mass fusion splicer chucks, mass mechanical splicegripping devices, and mass connector housings.TIA-455-12321.4 Limits of UsefulnessThis test procedure provides methods for measuring or verifying dimensional parametersof optical fiber ri

29、bbons. Parameters which are deemed important by usersof optical fiber ribbon should be specified in the Detail Specification. Some or all of thedimensions measured by this procedure may be important to the ribbon user depending onthe application.Three measurement methods are provided, one optical an

30、d two mechanical. ApparatusThe following apparatus or equivalent equipment is required to perform this test:3.1 Optical mea

33、surement apparatus3.1.1 Optical comparator. An optical comparator or equivalent device containing thefollowing elements may be used.3.1.1.1 Illumination. Provide illumination for the ribbon specimen. Use backlighting tosilhouette the sample or incident illumination to provide a bright outer image. U

34、se anappropriate light source with adjustable intensity.3.1.1.2 XY positioning stage. Provide an XY stage onto which the ribbon sample may besecured and positioned to move relative to the microscope objective lens. The X and Ydirections provide for centering or moving the specimen. The Z direction p

35、rovidesfocusing. Given that ribbon handling hardware (splicer clips, thermal strip chucks,connectors, etc.) effectively acts to flatten any curvature in the ribbon cross section, it isnecessary to allow smoothing of the curvature with an appropriate holding device forpurposes of this procedure. Care

36、 should be taken so that the sample is not distorted byany means other than by the holding fixture which shall only act to smooth any potentialcurvature in the cross section. Distortion implies point compression of the matrix heightand/or width or fiber positioning within the matrix due to an extern

37、ally applied force.3.1.1.3 Objective lens. Provide an objective lens to magnify the output image. Totalmagnification of the lens system is a function of the particular apparatus and the use forwhich it is intended. Therefore, there is no standard recommendation on totalmagnification.3.1.1.4 Ribbon e

38、nd preparation apparatus. This apparatus shall be capable of makingan end cut on the ribbon which is clean, flat and relatively perpendicular to the ribbon axis.Refer to FOTP-57 or similar procedures for guidance.3.1.1.5 Image monitor. An image monitor may be used to display the ribbon sample.The sc

39、reen on the monitor typically has a pattern such as crosshairs to assist in evaluatingthe image specimen. The monitor should provide a precision scale to measure thedimensional parameters. Alternatively, a micrometer eyepiece may be used. Additionally,the measurement function may be provided by the

40、XY stage.3.1.1.6 Template. A template defining the specification limits may be used to evaluatethe ribbon sample. Multiply each of the maximum specified ribbon dimensions by theTIA-455-1234magnification factor of the optical comparator. Prepare, on transparent material, a fullscale template with the

41、 calculated maximum dimensions and a projected image accuracyas specified in the Detail Specification. The image accuracy should reflect themagnification used and the required measurement accuracy. For example, for 20xmagnification and a desired specimen accuracy of 10 m, use an image accuracy of 0.

42、2 mm at the viewing screen. Templates used should be calibrated using standardstraceable to the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST).Alternatively, the image of the ribbon end may be digitized and transferred to a computerfor comparison with a software template.3.1.1.7 Calibration s

43、tandard. Provide a standard for calibrating the measurement device.This standard should have two or more features with a known distance between theircenters or between pairs of edges facing in the same direction. The calibration standardshall be traceable to NIST.3.1.2 Laser scanning micrometer. A l

44、aser scanning micrometer as described inFOTP-48, Method B or an equivalent device may be used. The resolution and accuracy ofthe gauge must be suitable for the target dimensions. Typical static values for theresolution range are 1 to 2 m. Typical static accuracy should be between 0.5 m and 1.5 m.3.2

45、 Mechanical measurement apparatus3.2.1 Micrometer. A low torque ratchet micrometer, dial indicator gauge, caliper, orequivalent device may be used.3.2.1.1 The resolution and accuracy of the micrometer, dial indicator gauge, or calipermust be suitable for the target dimensions. The user should ensure

46、 that proper proceduresand training are in place to allow repeatable measurements across measurementpersonnel.3.2.1.2 The low torque ratchet micrometer, dial indicator gauge, or caliper must allowmeasurement of ribbon dimensions without compression/deformation (see 3.1.1.2) ofribbon geometry. Additi

47、onally, the micrometer or gauge working surfaces (exposed to theribbon) should be of sufficient dimensions to ensure that the full expanse of each ribbonsurface is accommodated. This ensures that the maximum ribbon dimension is indicated.3.2.2 Aperture gauge. An aperture gauge through which a length

48、 of ribbon can bepassed can be used to verify the outside dimensions of a ribbon (width and thickness).No coating (matrix) residue shall be scraped or removed from the ribbon under test due tothe aperture gauge.TIA-455-1235The maximum inside dimensions and associated tolerances of the aperture gauge

49、represent the maximum ribbon height and width. They shall be specified in the DetailSpecification. If no tolerances are provided in the Detail Specification, a tolerance of-0 m/+10 m may be used as a default.4. Sampling and specimensRibbon samples shall be representative of the ribbon being evaluated. Given that allribbons are handled by the craft using various clips and holders which act to flatten orsmooth curvature in the ribbon cross section, the ribbon samples for geometry testing shallbe prepared in a fashion to remove any bow or curvature in the transverse dir
