12、 3.7 Connecting Block O A device used for connecting premises wiring. 3.8 Dial Light _. A small light bulb- powered by low voltage used to illuminate a telephone set dial. 3.9 Drive Rings A device used to hold premises wiring in place where appearance is not a factor. The nail in a drive ringis driv

13、en into the supporting surface and the ring is open to permit placing of the wires. Drive rings shall be used at least six (6) feet from the floor so that its nail will not present a safety hazard. 3.10 Drop Wire Drop wire is used to extend telephone service to the premises; it may be either aerial

14、or buried. 3.11 Ground Part of an electrical path or connection that terminates on a grounding system or ground rod in the earth. 3.12 Ground Connection * Metallic paths (wires, rods and clamps) which connect electrical circuits to earth ground, usually for protective reasons. 3.13 Ground Rods A sol

15、id metal rod or pipe which is driven into the earth to provide an earth ground for electrical circuits. . 3.14 Hardwired . The term “hardwired“ as applied to voice terminal equipment means the connection of the equipment line cord to a connecting block with screw temina- tions. Under the FCC Registr

16、ation Program for terminal equipment, anly that equipment which was connected to the public telephone network in a “hardwired“ manner prior to July 1, 1979, may remain.connected dr be reconnected in such a fashion. See “Modular. 3.15 Modular The term “modular“, as used in this document, means the co

17、nnection of the voice terminal equipment line cord to th premises wiring by means of .a plug and jack arrangement. 18、al equipment or premises wiring and the public telephone network. -. 3.17 Non-metallic Sheath Cable An assembly of insulated conductors that has an outer sheath of non-metallic material. 3.18 Open W i r ing Commercial ac powgr wires which are insulated but do hot have an outer protective jacket. 3.1

Premises is the discrete real property on or within a single building owned, leased or controlled by a customer of the public telephone network. 3.20 Premises Wiring Wiring that distributes telephone service within the premises beyond the Network Interface. 3.21 Protector A device used

Equipment Terminal equipment which is registered for connection to the public telephone network in accordance with Part 68 of the FCC Rules and Regulations. If a terminal device has been FCC registered it will have a registration number permanently affixed

22、to it. 3.24 Tip and Ring ,. As used within this document, tip and ring refer to the wires $n a two wire telephone oircuit. The ring usually has negative battery potenth1 with respect to the tLp. 3.25 Transformer AS used in this documentr a transformer is an electrical device which e reduces commerci

One end is U-shaped or placement over the wire. The other end contains a tab which is affixed to t

24、he mounting surface with a nail or screw. 3.27 Wire Guard e A length of plastic (round or U-shaped) used to protect telephone wiring from abrasion or foreign voltages. 4 TECHNICAL REQUIREMENTS 4.1 Means of Connection to the Network 4.1.1 The physical and electrical demarcation between premises wirin

25、g and public telephone network is the Network Interface. The means of connection at the Network Interface shall be in accordance with Part 68 of the FCC Rules and ReguJations. 4.1.2 The functions of the Network Interface are to provide: (1) A convenient connection between the public telephone networ

26、k and premises wiring; (2) a means for isolating troubles between public telephone network facilities and premises wiring. 4.1.3 The Network Interface will provide for terminating four conductors and will not alter the established parameters of the service provided 4.1.4 The location of the Network

27、Interface may be inside, or outside on the premises, will provide reasonable access for the customer and telephone company personnel, and will be at the discretion of the telephone company. 4.2 General Technical and Safety Considerations 4.21 Premises wiring shall only be used to conduct the operati

28、ng signals, voltages, and currents normally found on the public telephone network. However, this does not preclude use of vacant pairs by ancillary telephone devices provided that such use does not interfere with the public telephone network. Specific requirements are under consideration. 4.2.2 Norm

29、al operation of the public telephone network involves the presence of voltages and currents, some constant, some intermittent. Therefore, premises wiring shall not be installed or serviced without first disconnecting the premises wiring from the Network Interface and from any other power soure. 4.2.

30、3 When installing or testing a low voltage transformer used as a power supply for dial lights , speaker phones, etc. bodily contact with the commercial c power terminals of the transformer should be avoided. There shall be no more than one transformer connected to a given pair of .premises wires. e

In kitchens, they shall be located a reason- able distance from grounded metallic surfaces such as sinksI ranges, or refrigerators. Jacks shall not be located

32、 in areas where teleEhone devices or handsets can be immersed in water. 4.2.5 Premises wiring shall not be installed or maintained in recreational trailers, mobile homes or metal-sided buildings, where the metal siding, framework or other conducting surfaces have an electricai potential with respect

33、: to ground. 4.2.6 Protectors, grounding systems and attachme placed by the telephone company shall not be connected to, disturbed, removed or otherwise modified by other than telephone company personnel. 4.2.7 During lightning storms, it is possible for very high, short-duration voltages to appear

34、on telephone instruments and wiring. Premises wiring shall not be installed or maintained during active lightning discharge conditions. 4.2.8 Persons wearing pacemakers shall not work on premises wiring. . 4.2.9 The installation of premises wiring in explosive areas or hazardous locations shall comp

35、ly with Articles 500 through 516, and Article 517, Section G, of the National Electrical Code, and with local building codes. 4.3 Material Requirements Wire - 4.3.1 4.3.1.1 Premises wiring shall be twisted in a four conductor spiral or as two twisted pairs. Three or four pair wire shall have the con

36、ductors twisted together to form pairs and then grouped together to form the cable core. The wire pairs shall be covered with a jacket of polyvinyl- chloride or a functionally equivalent compound which has a 1500 Vrms minimme breakdown rating. a 4.3.1.2 4.3.1.3 Each conductor shall be solid annealed

37、 copper, individually insulated with distinctly colored, high density polyethylene or functionally equivalent compound., 4.3.1.4 The public telephone network is designed for proper operation assuming a limited amount o resistance introduced by premises wiring, telephone sets, and ancillary equipment

Generally, wire runs should be Limited to 250 feet for # 22 awg wire, 200 feet for # 24 awg wir wire runs which provide suppott for any objects: excessively hot locations: steam pipes, heating ducts, hot water pipes, etc.;- locations where wires will be subjected to abrasion or corro- sion; betwee

41、sed. 4.4.2.7 When drilling through walls, floors, or ceilings to place premises wiring, avoid contact with concealed hazards such as other electrical wiring, gas pipes, steam pipes, water pipes, etc. 4.4.3 Wire Separations 4.4.3.1 Minimum separations are required in or on buildings, between telephon

42、e wirlng and other conductors or metallic objects. The wiring separations specified in Table 3 are required for crossing and parallel runs. For wire crossings, alternacives to the minimum separations are also shown. 4.4.3.2 Separations of less than six (6) feet between premises wiring and lightning

43、wire on rods are permissible under the following condi- tions: (1) Where telephone, power, and lightning rod ground connections are all made to a common metallic cold water pipe that sic properly grounded; (2) where separately driven ground rods are used for telephone, power, and lightning rod insta

44、llations, and the ground rods are . bonded together. In no case shall the separation be less than four (4) inches.
