6、m This specification covers flash welded rings made of corrosion and heat-resistant austenitic steels and austenitic-type iron, nickel, or cobalt alloys, or precipitation-hardenable alloys. 1.2 Application These rings have been used typically for parts, such as flanged casing and seal rings, requiri
7、ng both corrosion and heat resistance, but usage is not limited to such applications. 2. REQUIREMENTS 3.1 Material Shall be as specified on the drawing. 3.2 Fabrication 3.2.1 Forming Rings sha
12、ll be formed from rolled, extruded, or forged shapes. Grain flow in the formed rings shall be substantially circumferential. 3.2.2 Preparation for Welding Formed rings shall be clean and free from foreign materials in the area of electrode contact and at the surface to be welded. 3.2.3 Welding The e
13、nds of the formed rings shall be flash butt-welded together with only one weld on each ring. Welding shall be performed on a machine provided with control of: Feed of the joint during flashing Rate and distance of travel of the sections to be welded Secondary voltage and current magnitude Timing and
14、 current cut off. The flash shall be maintained during the flashing interval of the welding operation. The amount of manual flashing used for preheating shall be limited to 10% of the total flashing distance. The machine shall be capable of repeating the sequence of operations independently of the s
15、kill of the machine operator. A record of machine settings and sequence of operations for each part number shall be maintained in accordance with purchasers requirements. 3.2.4 Solution Heat Treatment The welded rings shall be solution heat treated, unless otherwise specified by the applicable mater
16、ial specification or part drawing. 3.2.5 Proof Testing of Welds (Sizing) Each ring, after cooling to room temperature, shall be tested to determine the quality of the weld. Each ring, before sizing, shall have flash and excess metal at the weld removed to within +0.031 inch (+0.80 mm) of parent meta
17、l surface before or after solution heat treatment. Preliminary sizing may be done before cooling but final sizing shall be done at room temperature. Sizing shall be sufficient to provide a permanent expansion of not less than 1% across a 2 inch (50.8 mm) gage length centered on the weld. The 1% mini
18、mum permanent expansion shall be verified by measurement on at least one ring from each welding lot. Sizing shall be performed to provide uniform stress distribution throughout the ring. SAE INTERNATIONAL AMS7490Q Page 3 of 6 3.2.5.1 For rings made from product under 0.188 inch (4.78 mm) in nominal
19、thickness, flash removal may reduce thickness below that of parent metal provided that the finished weld blends smoothly into adjacent metal and provided that thickness is not reduced below the minimum specified on the drawing for the parent metal. 3.2.6 When the drawing or applicable material speci
20、fication requires additional heat treatment, rings shall be so heat treated after sizing in accordance with 3.2.5. 3.2.7 Restoration to Shape If necessary to restore shape of rings following sizing, or following final heat treatment when specified, such operations shall be done on suitable presses a
21、nd not by localized blows as from a hammer. Rings may be reheated to a temperature not higher than 900 F (482 C) for such operations. 3.3 Properties Rings shall conform to the following requirements: 3.3.1 Tensile Properties Through Welded Area Shall be as follows, determined on specimens cut, after
22、 final heat treatment of the lot, from welded rings processed as specified herein: Tensile tests shall be conducted in accordance with ASTM E 8/E 8M. 3.3.1.1 Nonprecipitation-Hardenable Austenitic Steels and AMS5665 The requirements shown in Table 1 apply only to austenitic corrosion and heat-resist
23、ant steels having specified maximum hardness up to 187 HB, inclusive, or equivalent (See 8.2), and to AMS5665.
