Scope1.1 This guide establishes a classification system and refer-ences test methods for verifying the degrees of protecti
3、onprovided by a membrane switch against the following:1.1.1 The ingress of dust into a membrane switch.1.1.2 Ingress of water into a membrane switch, or the entryinto the finished product on which it is mounted.1.1.3 It can be expanded to incorporate the degrees ofprotection from other environmental
4、 contaminants (such as saltfog) as these tests are developed either by ASTM, or existingtest methods developed by other organizations are determinedto be appropriate.1.1.4 Where external test methods are referenced, this guidespecifies the special conditions that shall be considered inapplying these
5、 tests to membrane switches and how the resultsare interpreted.1.1.5 The IP rating is based on the switch construction onlyand does not consider the effects of the switch body as a sealantfor the enclosure.1.1.6 For ingress of dust, numerals 5 and 6, the test iscarried out according to category 2 (t
6、esting at atmosphericpressure).1.2 This guide references appropriate test methods forverifying that a membrane switch satisfies the level of protec-tion specified by a given classification.1.3 This guide is a modification of the classification systemdescribed within IEC 60529 Degrees of Protection O

Terminology3.1 Definitions of Terms Specific to This Standard:3.1.1 membrane switch, na momentary switching devicein which at least one contact is on,

Classification System4.1 The degree of protection provided by a membraneswitch is designated by the MS-IP code:4.1.1 MSAIP654.1.1.1 MS = membrane switch.4.1.1.2 A = If “A” is present in code then method or mediadeviates from this standard.4.1.1.3 IP = Standard Ing
10、ress Protection designation.4.1.1.4 1st Numeral = Dust Protection Code (see Table 1).4.1.1.5 2nd Numeral = Water (Liquid) Protection Code (seeTable 2).4.1.2 The MSIP code comprises a series of numerals. Eachnumeral represents the level of ingress protection offered bythe membrane switch to each cont
11、aminant. In this standardwhen addressing only the 1st or 2nd numeral the other numeralis replaced with an “X” for clarity. For example, MSIP X5would refer only to testing for water ingression. The “X”notation is not used as a final designation. If testing is notcompleteda“0”isused for that numeral (
12、see Table 1 andTable 2).4.1.3 It is intended that the classification scheme be ex-panded by the addition of further numerals to the sequence toincorporate tests for other contaminants. Deviation from thestandard are declared.4.1.4 The numeric designations for dust and water are basedon those classif

Significance and Use5.1 Ingression protection classifications are widely used bymanufacturers for specifying the level of protection offered by
16、electronic enclosures.5.2 An example of such a classification scheme is IEC60529. Membrane switch manufacturers are often asked tomeet these standards, however the test methods specifiedwithin these standards do not address considerations specific tomembrane switches.5.3 A single classification sche
17、me such as this is an impor-tant means of integrating the various standards that relate toingression protection specifically for membrane switches.5.4 Ingression testing can be useful to identify designdeficiencies.6. Interferences6.1 The membrane switch should not be tested in itsun-mounted state.
18、The switch sample or a representativecoupon of the switch should be mounted onto the final end-useenclosure, panel, bezel, or agreed upon material.6.1.1 Discussion Assembly Specimen ThisASTM test istrying to provide a practical world analog for the results hereinobtained, as a result, the unit under
19、 test (UUT) must be in thefinal mounted condition. The test is able to show flame-resistance in the final assembly as it interacts with themembrane switchs construction.6.2 The roughness, flatness, and existence of residues on thesubstrate surface to which the membrane switch is mounted.6.3 The leng
20、th of time between the lamination of themembrane switch layers together to make the switch.6.4 The length of time between the lamination of themembrane switch to the substrate and the performance on thetest.6.5 The temperature at which the test is being conducted.7. Conditioning7.1 Unless otherwise
21、specified in a relevant product stan-dard, the test samples for each test shall be in a clean and newcondition.7.2 It is preferred that the switch is mounted on a rigidtransparent backer to better observe the ingression of dust orwater into the switch, however when required and declared, theparts sh
22、all be mounted on the enclosure in the manner stated bythe manufacturer.8.
