Scope1.1 This specification covers the requirements for recycledethylene glycol base engine coolant conc

3、entrate and recycledpropylene glycol base engine coolant concentrate for use inautomobiles and light-duty vehicles. Committee D15 hasdeveloped this specification using experience, knowledge andresearch from recycling used aqueous base engine coolant andblends of used aqueous base engine coolant and

4、virgin glycol.This standard does not apply to coolant produced from otherglycol sources such as medical waste, distillation bottoms,airplane/airport deicers and polyester production waste. Thisspecification provides a procedure for evaluating engine cool-ant recycling technologies through the recycl

5、ing of a referencesynthetic used engine coolant. It also specifies the chemical,physical, and performance requirements for the recycled glycolbase engine coolant concentrate that is produced from thatprocedure. When used at 40 to 70 volume % in water, it willfunction effectively during both winter a

6、nd summer. Thismaterial is intended to provide protection against freezing,boiling, and corrosion in automobile or other light-duty servicecooling systems.1.2 The values stated in SI units are to be regarded as thestandard. 21、1 Storage Stability and Compatibil-ity63. Reagents and Materials3.1 Purity of ReagentsReagent grade chemicals shall beused in all tests. Unless otherwise indicated, it is intended thatall reagents conform to the specifications of the Committee onAnalytical Reagents of the American Chemical Society w

22、heresuch specifications are available7. Other grades may be used,provided it is first ascertained that the reagent is of sufficientlyhigh purity to permit its use without lessening the accuracy ofthe determination.3.2 Purity of WaterUnless otherwise indicated, referencesto water shall be understood

23、to mean reagent water as definedby Type IV of Specification D 1193.4. Procedure4.1 In order to properly evaluate a coolant recycling tech-nology, a reference synthetic used coolant (Annex A1)istobeused as the feed stock. The reference synthetic used coolantshall be prepared in accordance with Annex

24、A1. An appropri-ately sized batch of reference synthetic used coolant is to beprepared and used to purge the recycling process componentsand yield enough consistent product to complete the testingspecified within this specification4.2 Prepare the coolant recycling equipment or technologyin accordanc

25、e with the manufacturers directions and recom-mendations.4.3 Vigorously stir or mix the reference synthetic usedcoolant using appropriate vessels and mixing equipment im-mediately prior to and during the processing through thecoolant recycling process.4.4 Recycle the reference synthetic used coolant

26、 accordingto the manufacturers directions and recommendations.4.5 Evaluate the recycled coolant according to the require-ments listed in this specification.5. General Requirements5.1 The recycled glycol base engine coolant concentrateshall consist essentially of ethylene glycol or propylene glycolob

27、tained from the processing of light-, medium- or heavy-dutyengine coolant products. The recycled glycol base enginecoolant concentrate can in part contain virgin glycol. It alsoshall contain suitable corrosion inhibitors, a foam suppressor,and sufficient water to dissolve the additives.5.1.1 Recycle

28、d ethylene glycol base engine coolant concen-trates may be packaged and should be able to be poured attemperatures as low as 18C (0F). Other glycols such aspropylene and diethylene glycol may be included up to amaximum of 15 % if the chemical and physical properties inTable 1 are met.5.1.2 Recycled

29、propylene glycol base engine coolant con-centrates may contain glycols other than propylene glycol up to1 % provided the chemical and physical properties of Table 1are met5.2 The recycled glycol base engine coolant concentrateshall conform to the chemical and physical properties in Table1. If the re

30、cycled glycol base engine coolant concentratecontains chloride, or sulfate levels greater than the require-ments specified in Table 1, fleet testing requirements describedin Section 6 shall be met. If the chloride, or sulfate require-ments, or both, in Table 1 are met, fleet testing is not required.

31、NOTE 1The intention of conducting fleet testing is to verify that theeffects of residual contaminants left in the recycled glycol base enginecoolant are neutralized through real world application in a fleet test. Dueto the fact that there are not enough industry field test data available tosupport s

35、engine coolant concentrateshall conform to the general requirements in Table 2.5.4 The recycled glycol base engine coolant concentrateshall be in accordance with the performance requirements inTable 3.5.5 When preparing solutions for actual service, use mu-nicipal (treated) water, or low mineral con

36、tent well water. Ifsuch water is not available, then use deionized (demineralized)or distilled water. This practice will minimize the formation ofhard water scale and avoid the introduction of aggressivecontaminants, such as chlorides and sulfates, that can increasethe corrosion rate of aluminum and

37、 iron (see Appendix X1 foradditional information).5.6 The product, when installed in accordance with therecommendations of the manufacturer of the vehicle or thecoolant recycling process, and those on the product label, shallbe suitable for use in a properly maintained cooling system (seeAppendix X1

38、) in normal passenger car service for a minimumof one year without adversely affecting fluid flow and heattransfer.6. Fleet Testing Requirements6.1 Engine CoolantsReference engine coolant concen-trate (see Annex A2) and recycled engine coolant concentrateshall be used to conduct the fleet testing.6.

39、2 VehiclesA minimum of fourteen vehicles is recom-mended to start the test: seven containing reference enginecoolant concentrate (control vehicles) and seven containingrecycled engine coolant concentrate (test vehicles). A mini-mum of five control vehicles and five test vehicles shall finishthe test

Starting with fourteen vehicles allows for vehicles todrop out of the test for various reasons, that is, mechanicalfailure, coolant contamination, etc.6.2.1 Vehicle SelectionAll vehicle cooling systems shouldbe inspected prior to selection. Vehicles with corroded coolingsystems should not be used

41、for testing purposes. Vehicleselection shall be made as follows:6.2.1.1 Control vehicles and test vehicles shall be matchedpairs and be new or have similar low mileage accumulation.6.2.1.2 Same year, make, and model.6.2.1.3 Similar mileage and cooling system conditions.6.2.1.4 Same cooling system an

42、d power train configuration.6.2.1.5 Aluminum head(s), aluminum radiator, aluminumheater core, and aluminum water pump (housing).6.2.1.6 Cast iron block (optional).NOTE 2Vehicles equipped with cast iron heads may be tested inaddition to those specified above.Aminimum of five control vehicles andfive
