Scope1.1 This test method covers a procedure to measure a carbonblack property called Void Volume. The void volume isobtained by measuring the compressed volume o
3、f a weighedsample contained in a cylindrical chamber when a specifiedcompression force is applied by a movable piston with adisplacement transducer on the piston mechanism.1.2 Void volume is an important carbon black property thatrelates to the compounded physical properties for carbonblack-filled e

8、d volume (carbon black), na measure of theirregularity and non-sphericity of carbon black aggregateparticles, it is expressed as the difference, (compressedvolume-theoretical volume) for a mass of carbon black, thedifferential volume is normalized to a selected unit mass.3.1.3.1 DiscussionThe aggreg
9、ate irregularity resists com-pression and thus the compressed volume is a function of thedegree of this irregularity. The compressed void volumes arespecific to the compressed volume measuring instrument and tothe conditions of test.4. Summary of Test Method4.1 The compressed volume of a weighed dry
10、 test sample ofa candidate carbon black is obtained in a void volumeinstrument under calibration test conditions. From the com-pressed volume, the void volume is obtained by subtracting thetheoretical volume.5. Significance and Use5.1 The void volume of a carbon black expressed inabsolute terms, VV,
11、 is a carbon black property that reflectsdifferences in structure for candidate carbon blacks. Structureis a generic term that is a function of the shape irregularity anddeviation from sphericity of carbon black aggregates. Themore that a carbon black resists compression by havingsubstantial aggrega
12、te irregularity and non-sphericity, thegreater the compressed volume and void volume.5.2 Structure is a property that influences the physicalproperties developed in carbon black compounds for use intires, mechanical rubber goods, and other manufactured rubberproducts.6. 16、used to measure thecompressed volume of carbon blacks from which the voidvolume is calculated. The void volume instrument or deviceshall conform to the following generic specifications and becapable of operating as outlined in 6.4.1-6.4.3.6.4.1 The instrument shall have a rigid framework thatcontain
17、s a metal block with a vertically oriented cylindricalsample chamber (see Fig. X1.1).6.4.2 When opened, the sample port shall allow the loadingof a sample of carbon black.6.4.3 By means of a suitable mechanism with sufficientpower for the compression forces as required for testing, thepiston shall b
18、e capable of being moved to compress the sample.A device to record the movement of the piston and indicatedisplacement shall be provided. The compressed volume ofany sample is determined at the end of a test, by the distancefrom the end of the piston to the end of the sample port; this isdesignated
19、as a “height” in the procedure discussed in Section9. A test is concluded and the height is measured when apredetermined pressure is attained. See Appendix X1 for abrief description of a commercial void volume instrument thatmeets these specifications.7. Sampling7.1 Samples of candidate carbon black
