Scope1.1 This test method covers an index method that enablesthe evaluation of swelling properties of a clay mineral inreagent wa
3、ter for estimation of its usefulness in geosyntheticclay liners (GCLs). This test method is not applicable for clayswith polymers.1.2 It is adapted from United States Pharmacopeia (USP-NF-XVII) test method for bentonite.1.3 Powdered clay mineral is tested after drying to constantweight at 105 6 5 C;
4、 granular clay mineral should be groundto 100 % passing a 150-m (No. 100) U.S. Standard Sieve witha minimum of 65 % passing a 75-m (No. 200) U.S. StandardSieve. The bentonite passing the 150-m U.S. Standard Sieveis used for testing after drying to constant weight at 105 65 C.1.4 The values stated in

Significance and Use4.1 Clay mineral is a major functional component of GCLsystems that reduces the hydraulic conductivity of industrial,waste, or ground water through the liner.4.2 Clay mineral qual
11、ity can vary significantly and affect thehydraulic conductivity of the GCL composite. This test methodevaluates a significant property of clay mineral that relates toperformance.5. 16、pparatus6.1 Mortar and Pestle or Laboratory Hammer Mill, forgrinding clay mineral to required particle sizing.6.2 U.S. Standard Sieve, 150 m (No. 100), 75 m (No.200).6.3 Drying Oven, thermostatically controlled, preferablyforced-draft type, meeting requirements of Specification E145,and capable of m
17、aintaining a uniform temperature of 105 65 C throughout the drying chamber.6.4 Desiccator, of suitable size, containing indicator silicagel. It is preferable to use desiccant which changes color toindicate when it needs reconstitution.6.5 Laboratory Balance, 100-g capacity, 60.01-g accuracyand preci
18、sion.6.6 Weighing Paper, or small weighing dish.6.7 Glass Cylinder, graduated TC (to contain), Class Avolumetrically calibrated, with 1-mL subdivisions and groundglass stopper, high form with approximately 180-mm heightfrom inside base to 100-mL mark.6.8 Wash Bottle, for dispensing reagent water.6.9
19、 Spatula, flat-blade, to dispense clay mineral powder intocylinder; vibrating spatula should not be used, since thedelivery quantity may not be adequately controlled.6.10 Mechanical Ten-Minute Timer.6.11 ASTM Calibration Immersion Thermometer, (Specifi-cation E1).6.12 Microwave OvenA microwave oven,
20、 preferably witha vented chamber, is suitable. The required size and powerrating of the oven is dependent on its intended use. Ovens withvariable power controls and input power ratings of about700 W have been found to be adequate for this use. Variablepower controls are important and reduce the pote
21、ntial foroverheating the test specimen.NOTE 1Microwave ovens equipped with built-in scales and computercontrols have been developed for use in drying soils. Their use iscompatible with this test method.6.13 BalancesAll balances must meet the requirements ofGuide D4753 and this section. A Class GP1 b
22、alance of 0.01-greadability is required for samples having a mass of up to 200 g(excluding mass of sample container).6.14 Sample ContainersSuitable containers made of ma-terial resistant to corrosion and change in mass upon repeatedheating, cooling, exposure to materials of varying pH, andcleaning.
23、Microwave sample containers should be microwavesafe.6.15 Container Handling ApparatusGloves, tongs, orsuitable holder for moving and handling hot containers afterdrying.7. Reagents7.1 Purity of ReagentsUnless otherwise indicated, refer-ences to water shall be understood to mean reagent waterconformi
