Scope1.1 This practice establishes the procedure for melting orheating, or both, of hot-applied joint and crack sealants andf
3、illers in preparation for the making of test specimens used inthe laboratory evaluations of the sealants and fillers. Refer tothe specific standard material specification for sampling re-quirements, test sample quantity, temperatures and times formelting and heating, and the number of specimens requ
4、ired fortesting.1.2 This practice is applicable to the hot-applied joint andcrack sealants and fillers used in both portland cement andasphaltic-concrete pavements.1.3 The values stated in either SI units or inch-pound unitsare to be regarded separately as standard. The values stated ineach system m
5、ay not be exact equivalents; therefore, eachsystem shall be used independently of the other. Combiningvalues from the two systems may result in non-conformancewith the standard.1.4 WARNING Mercury has been designated by EPA andmany state agencies as a hazardous material that can causecentral nervous
6、 system, kidney and liver damage. Mercury, orits vapor, may be hazardous to health and corrosive tomaterials. Caution should be taken when handling mercury andmercury containing products. Significance and Use4.1 It is intended that this practice be used by manufactur-ers, users, and testing agencies. The use of this practiceestablishes a uniform procedure fo
11、r the melting or heating ofhot-applied sealants and fillers. It is not intended to establishtest procedures or conditions of test which are associated witheach of the joint sealants and fillers.5. Standard Conditions5.1 The laboratory atmospheric conditions, hereinafter re-ferred to as standard cond
12、itions, shall be as detailed inSpecification E171,236 2C (73.4 6 3.6F) and 50 % relativehumidity 65 %. The material shall be conditioned for 24 h atstandard conditions before melting or heating.6. Apparatus6.1 Laboratory Melter:6.1.1 The equipment for melting of the joint sealant or fillershall be a

16、19428-2959, United States.6.1.2 The heat transfer oil shall be a high flash point oil, thatis, in excess of 315C (600F).6.1.3 The heat source shall be thermostatically controlledand capable of maintaining the heat transfer oil temperaturewithin a tolerance of 63C (65F) and capable of heating theoil
17、to a maximum of 288C (550F).6.1.4 The mechanical agitator speed for the material shall be30 6 5 rpm when fully loaded and the agitator speed for the oilbath shall be such to allow continuous circulation of the oil.6.1.5 Except when adding the sealant or filler sample, orchecking temperature, the mel
18、ters pots shall be covered withclose fitting lids.6.1.6 Refer to Fig. 1 and Fig. 2 (bottom discharge type) andFig. 3 (removable can type) for typical laboratory melters.Alsosee Note 1.6.1.7 The thermometric device shall be a Type K thermo-couple with resolution of 1C and the calibration verified ina

The reference thermometer shall be NISTcertified or NISTtraceable.NOTE 1The removable can type melter as shown in Fig. 3 is verysimilar in design to the mel
21、ter shown in Fig. 1 and Fig. 2. Fig. 3s pots aredesigned to be removed so the melted material can be poured. Extra caremust be taken when using this type of melter. Check the manufacturersrecommended safety procedures before use.7. Precautions7.1 Prior to beginning sampling and heating of sealants o
22、rfillers, a Material Safety Data Sheet must be obtained from thesealant or filler manufacturer so that proper safe handlingtechniques will be used.7.2 Maximum Heating TemperatureIt is imperative thatthe manufacturers maximum heating temperatures be obtainedfor the material to be evaluated. The tempe
23、rature of thematerial must not exceed the maximum heating temperature.7.3 The laboratory melter unit should be located under anexhaust hood to disperse fumes.7.4 Joint/crack sealants and fillers are manufactured from avariety of materials. To avoid compatibility problems, clean themelter so that it
