Scope1.1 This specification covers shellac varnish consisting of asolution or “cut” of a specified type and grade of dry lac resinin specially denatured alcohol. Ninety-five pe

3、rcent (190 proof)ethyl alcohol, specially denatured according to Formula No. 1of the Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms of the Treasury Dept., isthe solvent most commonly used. However, other speciallydenatured alcohols and proprietary solvents are also used forthis purpose.1.2 The values stated in inch

4、-pound units are to be regardedas standard. The values given in parentheses are mathematicalconversions to SI units that are provided for information onlyand are not considered standard.2. Types, Grades, and Bodies3.1 This specification covers two grades,Aand B, of orangeshellac varnish and two grades, regular and refined, of bleachedlac varnish. Each type and grade may be furnished in verylight, light, medi

6、um, heavy, very heavy, or extra heavy bodyvarnish, as specified.4. Color4.1 The color of shellac varnish shall be no darker than thecolor of a standard varnish of the same nonvolatile mattercontent mutually agreed upon between the purchaser and theseller.NOTE 1Attention is called to the fact that th

7、e purchaser and the sellermust agree upon one of the two methods for determining color appearingin Test Methods D29.5. Drying Time5.1 Shellac varnish shall dry hard in 1 h. Shellac varnisheshaving a body greater than that for a light body varnish shall bethinned to the nonvolatile matter content of

8、a light bodyvarnish. Special conditions for this test may be made by mutualagreement between the purchaser and the seller.6. Body and Cut6.1 The body and cut of the respective types and gradesshall be based on the percent of nonvolatile matter and shallconform to the following minimum requirements:N

11、specified solvent in manufacturing the varnish.Allowance has, therefore, been made for 2 % maximum moisture andother volatile matter and 3 % insoluble matter in orange shellac, and for6 % moisture and other volatile matter in bleached lac, in arriving at aminimum value. Varnishes of the above specif

12、ied bodies or “cuts” shouldaccordingly conform to the respective minimum requirements specifiedfor nonvolatile matter.7. Properties of Dry Lac7.1 The nonvolatile matter in the varnish shall conform tothe Properties section of Specification D207 and Table 1 ofSpecification D237.1This specification is

16、ac varnish shall be packaged in standard commer-cial containers of the type and size mutually agreed uponbetween the purchaser and the seller. The label of the containershall show the type, grade, body or cut, and date of manufac-ture of the varnish contained therein.9. Test Methods9.1 The sampling
