Terminology3.1 Definitions:3.1.1 rel
6、ative density, nthe ratio of the density of amaterial at a stated temperature to the density of water at thesame stated temperature.4. Significance and Use4.1 The relative density of an engine coolant may be used todetermine the approximate percent glycol, freezing point, andboiling point, provided
7、the glycol type is known.4.2 The relative density of an engine coolant concentratecan be used as a production control test.5. Apparatus5.1 HydrometersHydrometers shall be of glass, graduatedin specific gravity range as listed in Table 1, and shall conformto Specification E100.5.2 Hydrometer Cylinder
8、The hydrometer cylinder inwhich the sample for the relative density test is confined shallbe made of clear glass and shall be cylindrical in shape. Forconvenience in pouring, it may have a lip on the rim. Theinside diameter of the cylinder shall be at least 25.4 mm (1.0in.) greater than the outside
9、diameter of the hydrometer. Theheight of the cylinder shall be such that the length of thecolumn of sample it contains is greater by at least 25.4 mm (1.0in.) than the portion of the hydrometer which is immersedbeneath the surface of the sample after a state of equilibriumhas been reached.5.3 Temper
10、ature Measuring Instrument(Environmentallysafe thermometer or thermocouple). An ASTM Partial Immer-sion Thermometer, having a range from 5 to 300C andconforming to the requirements for thermometer 2C or 2F, asprescribed in Specification E1, or some suitable non-mercurycontaining temperature measurin
11、g device, such as athermocouple, capable of operating in the same temperaturerange and having equal or better accuracy as summarized inSpecification E230. See Section 10, Precision and Bias. Thedata presented in this paragraph is derived using mercury-in-glass thermometers only.5.4 Water BathA water
12、 bath capable of maintaining asample temperature of 15.5 6 0.3C (60 6 0.5F) during thetest.6. Sampling6.1 Sample the coolant in accordance with Test MethodD1176, except as specified in this test method.7.
