Two genres of books, c

5、rime novels and childrens fiction, showed a reduction in the number of books borrowed. The borrowing of crime novels decreased from approximately 500 in 1991 to slightly over 200 in 2001 whereas the number of childrens fiction books taken out nearly halved from close to 700 to just under 400 during

6、the same time period. However, all other categories of books experienced an increase in the number borrowed, with the biggest jump in the self improvement category, which increased from just over 200 in 1991 to slightly under 1000 in 2001. Romance books also had a surge in popularity to 1400 in 2001

7、. All in all, the number of books lent in most categories increased with the exception of the categories of crime novels and childrens fiction. The pie chart gave information about the gender of Lumberton library members in 2010: approximately two thirds were female and about one third were male. 二、

As a result, children undoubtedly spend more time watching television than previous generations and less time being active. There are several rea

9、sons for this phenomenon, but also a number of strategies to encourage children to be more active. Firstly, televisions have become much more accessible through price reductions. Also, interesting programmers which target children, such as cartoons, have increased in number and improved in quality,

10、and this attracts a greater number of children viewers. The other reason for the increase in television viewing is related to the amount of time young people and children have these days. Often by the time they have studied a full day, they are simply too tired to go outside and play or do sports. H

11、owever, it is still vital that children spend enough time outdoors playing and being active. One approach which could be taken to motivate young children is to take the time to do fun outdoor activities with them, such as ice-skating or going to the beach for a swim. Running childrens outdoor fun gr

12、oups and camps is another way to encourage young people to be active. As well as this, schools can run physical education classes as part of their curriculum, to ensure the recommended levels of activity are completed each day. Finally, television programmers can build awareness and ideas for physic

13、al activities into their shows. All in all, the reduction in the price of televisions, combined with high quality of childrens programs has contributed to the problem. However, as discussed above, there are several initiatives which could help to combat the issue of increased television viewing and decreased physical activities in todays children.
