As they are obliged, whether they like it or not, to live in public during the whole summer, they very naturally try to extract some financia
4、l benefit from this state of affairs. 5 Scotland is a unique and austere place, laden with history, where you can find aristocratic palaces and castles, as well as the traditional parades in national costumes. 6 Some children do not make good travelling companions, for they will do nothing but whimp
5、er and howl throughout a journey, or they will spend all their time daubing their faces with chocolate or trying to climb out of the train window. 7 How to Select Travel Companions There is no more important decision or greater commitment in life than choosing the right traveling companion. Having a
6、 kid, getting married, rescuing a puppy, moving from Manhattan to Texarkana these are all small potatoes compared to spending 10 days in Guadeloupe with a friend. Most people have a lot of friends, maybe even several tiers of friends. The A list, the B list, the ones who can drive, the ones who can
7、find the exact right pair of jeans, the ones who have a lot of specialist doctors, the ones who can set up a tray of hors doeuvres in the shape of a pinwheel but none are who youd want to take on a trip. That takes a whole different list of criteria and it is all about Travel Compatibility. Ive comp
8、iled a simple checklist of scenarios for you and your potential travel mate to consider. If you have fewer than four out of six questions in common, you may want to rethink your choice. Financial Compatibility: This is not just about having similar incomes, but also about the way you spend money. He
9、res the scenario: Youve been walking around Belize all day and are exhausted and a little bit lost. You see a bus stop that might take you near your hotel and you see a taxi that will cost big bucks but will certainly take you to your hotel. Are you going to splurge or save? Fitness: If youre the ki
10、nd of person who panics when your gym is closed on Christmas, youll want to make sure youre both on the same page about fitness options. Heres the scenario; You are at the Statue of Liberty and you have an option of walking up to her nose or taking a helicopter around it. Are you taking the easy way
11、 out? Eating and Drinking: This is one of the most crucial points, in my opinion. I need to eat in a timely fashion, and my personality suffers if I dont. Because this one is more important than anything else, be honest with your answers to the following true-or-false questions: your trip depends on
12、 it. - I have frequently uttered the sentence, “I forgot to eat lunch!“ True or False. - When given a choice between a boat ride down the Ganges or a breakfast buffet, Id choose the buffet. True or False. - Sometimes I need a glass of wine, and when I say a glass, I mean a bottle. True or False. - I
13、 understand that some people shouldnt be spoken to before theyve had coffee. True or False. How You View Art: Ive often impressed people with the speed by which I can get through an exhibit. In fact, I frequently find myself waiting for upwards of an hour at the gift shop at the end of a show which
14、is not a bad thing. You can tell what pieces were the most important by whats on the T-shirts and mugs. Okay, theres not really a scenario here. Just say “Do you like to spend hours looking at one painting?“ and take it from there. Level of Comfort: This overlaps with many of the previous categories
15、, but it is significant in its importance or lack thereof. This is where you need to find out how your companion rates the things you consider non-negotiable in a hotel. Everyones list is different, but just to get you started, heres mine: - Air-conditioning - WiFi - Room service - A minimum of thre
16、e stars, no wait, four - Bonus for a stocked minibar Flexibility and Temperament; This last one encompasses all the categories. Some things to think about; How nuts do you get if everything doesnt work out? Is the goal of your trip to enjoy yourself? If you desperately wanted a water view and youre
17、facing the airport, will you cry or appreciate that youre getting to see an awful lot of planes take off? Or do you have a checklist of sites that youd be devastated to miss? (You and your friend should be in sync. You cant have two people panicking that the Pyramids are closing. ) In the end, my ad
18、vice is to go with your gut. And at the very least, know that you dont want to travel with me. 8 Ecotourism Thinking about going off the beaten path for your next vacation? If so, you might be one of the many people who are enjoying a relatively new mode of travel known as ecotourism. As the name im
19、plies, ecotourism focuses on conserving the ecology and natural heritage of tourist destinations. In addition, ecotourism features indigenous cultures and promotes ways for local communities to control and maintain their resources. In the past, vacationers usually spent their time staying at luxury
20、hotels and visiting famous landmarks and museums in cities such as New York, Paris and Tokyo. Others preferred to relax on the beautiful beaches of Hawaii or the deck of a cruise ship in the sunny Caribbean. There was little interaction with the local people and overcrowding often spoiled the natura
21、l beauty of popular vacation spots. In addition, excessive commercialization turned many places into tourist traps. Since the early 1980s, however, adventure-oriented and nature-based vacation activities have become increasingly popular. Developing alongside a global rise in environmental consciousn
22、ess and respect for cultural diversity, ecotourism is the one of the fastest growing sectors of the travel and tourism industry. Mountain climbing in the Himalayas, roughing it on a wilderness expedition, trekking in the Amazon rainforest and whale watching on the high seas are attractive alternativ
23、es to the urban comforts of five-star hotels and classy restaurants. But ecotourism means more than just traveling to remote destinations. The concept also emphasizes educating visitors about local people, customs and cultural heritage. Perhaps most importantly, it involves a methodical approach to
24、tourism that minimizes the negative impact on natural habitats and gives host communities a leading role in decision-making processes, along with the lions share of economic benefits. As tourism might be the largest industry in the world, sustainable growth strategies should be adopted to ensure tha
