Scope1.1 This practice provides information for the properstorage, mixing, and use of chemically setting sili

3、cate andsilica mortars for bonding chemical-resistant brick or tile inorder to obtain the optimum chemical resistance and physicalstrength of the mortar.1.2 This practice does not apply to the air-setting type ofsilicate and silica chemical-resistant mortars.1.3 Chemical-resistant brick or tile conf

Shipment and Storage4.1 The powder shall be protected from water duringshipment and storage. Powder that has become wet shall

9、 bediscarded.4.2 The liquid binder shall be protected from freezingduring shipment and storage. In the event that any containers ofliquid have ruptured, they shall be discarded.4.3 In the event that silica sols freeze, they must bediscarded. In the event that silicates freeze, they may berestored by

10、 warming and thorough stirring until a uniformsolution results. Consult the manufacturer for recommenda-tions.5. Installation Conditions5.1 Silicate and silica mortars shall be applied when thepowder, binder or water, brick or tile, substrate and ambient airtemperatures are all between 50F (10C) and

11、 90F (32C). Fortemperatures outside this range, consult the manufacturer forrecommendations.5.2 The brick or tile and substrate shall be clean and dryduring installation.6. Mixing and Application6.1 Use the proportions of powder to binder or potablewater recommended by the manufacturer. Weigh the po

12、wderand binder or potable water into separate containers accordingto the recommended ratio. Liquid and powder levels may thenbe marked so that future measurements may be made byvolume.6.1.1 The optimum properties may vary due to temperature.The mortar should be sufficiently stiff for the brick or ti

16、ee fourths of the powder to the liquid and mixwith hoe, trowel, or power mixer until all of the powder hasbeen wetted. Add the remainder of the powder to the mix andcontinue mixing to a proper mortar consistency.6.3 Mix only as much mortar as can be used during itsworking time. Since the working tim

17、e depends on thetemperature, the batch size shall be determined on the job siteif data are not available from the manufacturer.6.4 Mortar that has begun to set shall not be altered byadding binder or water. Remove mortar that has begun to setfrom the mortar pan, and discard it before preparing fresh

18、batches.6.5 No additives, such as portland cement shall be added tothe mortar. Silica sand or other materials shall not be addedunless recommended by the manufacturer, and then only in aquantity and quality specified by the manufacturer.6.6 Apply the mortar to the brick or tile in a mannerconsistent

19、 with good workmanship. Butter the surface to fullycover, leaving a slight mound of mortar in the center of thebrick face. Strike the mounded mortar toward each edge toensure full contact. Tap the brick or tile firmly into position sothat the joints are of the width recommended by the designengineer

20、 or the manufacturer and mortar is extruded from alljoints. Strike extruded mortar off the faces of the brick or tilewith a trowel. Chemical-resistant brickwork joints should be asnarrow as good workmanship and uniformity of the brick ortile will permit (preferably less than18 in. (3 mm).7. Acid Was

21、hing7.1 If acid washing is recommended by the manufacturer, itshall be carried out in accordance with his directions.8. Curing8.1 The time interval between the bonding of the brick ortile and the time the structure can be put into service shall bethat recommended by the manufacturer. Test Method C41

22、4 isrecommended for use in the determination of time to put intoservice.8.2 The installation shall be protected from moisture in allforms, and mechanical damage, for the period of time recom-mended by the manufacturer.9. Chemical Resistance9.1 Sodium and potassium silicate, and silica mortars areres

23、istant to most acids (except those containing fluorine).9.1.1 Exposure of silicate and silica mortars to water,boiling water, or neutral salt solutions may be detrimental.Consult the manufacturer for recommendations.9.1.2 Silicate and silica mortars are generally not resistant toalkalis.9.2 Under ce

24、rtain conditions crystal formation can occur insilicate mortars. If the crystals are growth salts, they candamage the joints.9.3 Chemical resistance to specific chemical media may bedetermined in accordance with Test Method C267.9.4 Consult the manufacturer regarding service conditionsand selection

25、of either sodium or potassium silicate, or silicamortars.10. Temperature Resistance10.1 Consult the manufacturer regarding the temperatureresistance of a specific mortar.11.
