3、dimensions of an elastomeric jointsealant in a test specimen configuration described in TestMethod C719 following a period of compression or tension.These sealant materials are typically highly filled elasticmaterials. The dimensional change of these sealant materials isdetermined by measuring the d

8、 Terminology3.1 Definitions:3.1.1 For definitions of terms used in this practice, refer toTerminologies E631 and C717.4. Summary of Practice4.1 This practice consists of monitoring the dimensionalchange of a sealant for a period of time required to establishdimensional stability.4.2 The motivation f
9、or this practice is to monitor thedimensions of a sealant at any time, but especially after aperiod of extended tension or compression to establish thestable dimensions of that sealant. The latter is used in appli-cation of a standard, such as Test Method C1735, by using theaccurate dimensions deter
10、mined by this practice after dimen-sional stability is attained.4.3 This practice will enable determination of the stabledimensions of a sealant. It will also allow the reporting of thetime scale over which the sealant dimensions are changing.5. Significance and Use5.1 Many sealants have been observ
11、ed to dimensionallychange following a period of compression or tension, such asoccurs during exposure in accordance with Practice C1589.Ithas been shown that for some sealants, increasing exposure toweathering increases the time required for dimensional stabil-ity and decreases the magnitude of dime
12、nsional change.Dimensional stability and knowledge of the stable sealantdimensions are critical to the accurate measurement of thesealants modulus by a test such as Test Method C1735.5.2 This practice will find application in improving theaccuracy of the modulus determined by a standard such as Test
13、Method C1735 by using the accurate dimensions determinedby this practice after stability is attained.6. Apparatus6.1 Dimensional Measuring ToolA micrometer, such asdigital calipers, capable of measuring the dimensions ofaluminum substrate and sealant to an accuracy of at least60.05 mm (60.002 in.),
14、is required. An accurate measurementof the geometry is critical.
