Significance and Use4.1 This test method provides a laboratory procedure fordetermining the relative water absorption p
8、roperties over timeof mortars used for masonry construction. Because the speci-mens are made under laboratory conditions and do not take intoaccount the effect of the masonry substrate or field mixingprocedures, this method is not intended for field use. Datagenerated from this test method may be us
9、eful for determiningthe relative effectiveness of water repellent admixtures or theeffect of other admixtures or mortar components on the waterrepellency of a mortar. However, use caution in interpreting theresults. While the resistance of masonry to water penetrationmay be related to the water abso
10、rption of the mortar, it alsodepends on other factors, such as the workmanship, extent ofbond, and the properties of the masonry units and mortar.NOTE 1This test method is specified in Specification C1384 fordemonstrating compliance of mortar admixtures classified as WaterRepellent. In this complian
11、ce testing, the admixed mortar is compared toa reference mortar made with the same mortar materials except that it doesnot include the admixture. For quality control testing of water repellentpreblended dry mortar mixes, the reference mortar is not typicallyavailable since the water repellent additi
12、ve is added during the manufac-turing process prior to bagging the final product. In these cases, theprocedure in Annex A1 can be used to determine the relative resistance ofthe mortar to absorption by capillary uptake.5. Apparatus5.1 BalanceA balance readable and accurate to 0.1 g.5.2 Uptake Contai
13、nerA watertight container with a mini-mum cross sectional area that is at least 50 % greater than thetotal area of the specimens test surface(s) and a minimumdepth of 75 mm. Provide a cover for the container to minimizeevaporation.5.2.1 Use specimen supports that allow a minimum of 3 mmclearance fro
14、m the bottom of the container and that cover amaximum of 10 % of the area of the specimens test surface.Use supports made of a material that does not float in water andthat does not rust, expand, or contract as a result of waterexposure.1This test method is under the jurisdiction of ASTM Committee C

United States15.2.2 The container shall be flat so that when a specimen isset on the supports the water level as specified in 7.4 shall notvary by more than 1 mm from one end of the specimen to theopposi
18、te end.5.3 Specimen MoldsMetal nominal 50-mm cube specimenmolds with removable plastic water tight disposable liners. Theplastic liners shall be rigid enough to retain their shape whenfree standing and filled with mortar.NOTE 2For this test method, actual specimen dimensions are mea-sured and used t
19、o calculate absorption per a unit area; therefore, 2-in. cubespecimen molds can be used interchangeably with 50-mm cube specimenmolds.5.4 SpoonA metal spoon approximately 230 mm in lengthand with a bowl approximately 100 mm in length.5.5 StraightedgeAsteel straightedge not less than 150 mmlong and a
20、pproximately 1.5 to 3.0 mm thick.5.6 TamperA tamper made of a nonabsorptive,nonabrasive, nonbrittle material such as a rubber compoundhaving a Shore A durometer hardness of 80 6 10, or seasonedoak wood rendered nonabsorptive by immersion for 15 minutesin paraffin at approximately 200C (392F), and ha
21、ving a crosssection of 13 by 25 mm and a convenient length of 127 to 152mm. The tamping face of the tamper shall be flat and at rightangles to the length of the tamper.5.7 Trowel, having a steel blade 100 to 150 mm in length,with straight edges.5.8 Tapping StickA hardwood rod, having a diameter of16

Specimen Preparation6.1 Prepare mor
23、tar according to Practice C305, adjustingthe water as necessary to obtain a flow of 110 6 5asdetermined by Test Method C1437. Record the flow. If anadmixture is being added to the mortar, the dosage rate, time ofaddition, and mixing sequence shall follow the manufacturersrecommendation. If there is
24、no manufacturersrecommendation, add a liquid admixture with the water andadd a dry admixture with the cementitious components. Recordthe type and amount of each material by weight used in themortar. In addition, record the type and amount by weight orvolume of any admixture used and when it was adde
