Technology, the application of knowledge for practical ends, is a major source of social change. Yet we would do well to
10、 remind ourselves that technology is human creation; it does not exist naturally. A spear or a robot is as much a cultural as a physical object. Until humans use a spear to hunt game or a robot to produce machine parts, neither is much more than a solid mass of matter. For a bird looking for an obje
11、ct on which to rest, a spear or robot serves the purpose equally well. The explosion of the Challenger space shuttle and the Russian nuclear accident at Chernobyl drive home the human quality of technology ; they provide cases in which well-planned systems suddenly went haywire and there was no read
12、y hand to set them right. Since technology is a human creation, we are responsible for what is done with it. Pessimists worry that we will use our technology eventually to blow our world and ourselves to pieces. But they have been saying this for decades, and so far we have managed to survive and ev
13、en flourish. Whether we will continue to do so in the years ahead remains uncertain. Clearly, the impact of technology on our lives deserves a closer examination. Few technological developments have had a greater impact on our lives than the computer revolution. Scientists and engineers have designe
14、d specialized machines that can do the tasks that once only people could do. There are those who assert that the switch to an information-based economy is in the same camp as other great historical milestones, particularly the Industrial Revolution. Yet when we ask why the Industrial Revolution was
15、a revolution, we find that it was not the machines. The primary reason why it was revolutionary is that it led to great social change. It gave rise to mass production and, through mass production, to a society in which wealth was not confined to the few. In somewhat similar fashion, computers promis
16、e to revolutionize the structure of American life particularly as they free the human mind and open new possibilities in knowledge and communication. The Industrial Revolution supplemented and replaced the muscles of humans and animals by mechanical methods. The computer extends this development to
17、supplement and replace some aspects of the mind of human beings by electronic methods. It is the capacity of the computer for solving problems and making decisions that represents its greatest potential and that poses the greatest difficulties in predicting the impact on society. (PASSAGE TWO) One o
18、f the components of The Southside Poverty Alleviation Project which was implemented in 2012 was the improvement on the East and West Collet Canal Streets. Everyone can remember the un-pleasant state of these streets and the canal which ran in the center. At the completion of the project there was no
19、 denying the practical and aesthetical improvement in these areas. It was like day and night; the difference was obvious. The section most transformed was the area that spans the length of the West Collet Canal from Cemetery Road to Dean Street. This section was used by taxi drivers in front of the
20、Novelos bus terminal and by produce vendors in front of the Michael Finnegan Market. The project allowed for taxi and private motor vehicle parking and in an innovative move the construction of business booths over the canal which has been lined with concrete. This truly is an inspiring venture as i
21、t promotes and encourages entrepreneurship. This is something that we dont have enough of. While this is surely encouraged, it has been observed that one such business has placed barricades(路障) on the street in front of its entrance. This defeats the entire purpose of the rehabilitation of the Canal
22、 Streets which was to provide much needed parking space. Placing these barriers on the street itself deprives motorists of parking and in effect creates traffic problems in the area. If history is our guide it is then accurate to assume that the next step which will be taken by this business is a wa
23、terproof canvas expansion. you guessed it, onto the street. This would mean that we would be back to square one . We will have the same problem we had in the beginning where vendors spread their produce on the street along the canal. It is therefore imperative that the relevant authorities take note
24、 and apply whatever corrective measure is needed to curb this immediately. Belize is transforming for the better. Lets keep it that way.
