Often these cars are a preview for advances that will be adopted in production models in the years to come. The Concept Car Year in Review: 2013 includes

19、 articles from the editors of Automotive Engineering International over the course of one year. We have collected these articles to present you with a snapshot of the future trends of the automotive industry. These unique cars are the product of years of engineering and planning. Concept and prototy

20、pe vehicles are often the first glimpse that the general public has to these new technologies. The Concept Car Year in Review: 2013 has taken the searching out of gathering information about concept and prototype cars. The editors of Automotive Engineering International have years of experience and

21、a reputation for reliable journalistic coverage of the automotive industry. Each of the articles selected to run in this book has appeared in Automotive Engineering International in print or online. The Concept Car Year in Review: 2013 encapsulates one year of innovation by automakers and suppliers.

23、sign proposal for Alfa sedan IEDs Alfa Romeo Gloria concept gives an impression of how a future large Alfa Romeo might look. It is rare to see the work of design students displayed at motor shows in Europe. Nevertheless, the Instituto Europeo di Design, also know as IED or the European Design Instit

24、ution, in Turin has made its 10th appearance at the 2013 Geneva Motor Show. On display was a full-scale model of a project created by students from IEDs Masters in Transport Design program. It was a collabora- tive project with Alfa Romeo for a sedan that would also appeal to the American and Asian

25、markets. The project was for a design named Gloria measuring 4700 mm (185.0 in) long, 1920 mm (75.6 in) wide, and 1320 (52.0 in) mm tall, resulting from an idea by Alexandros Liokis from Greece, with support from Mayur Pipaliya from India and 18 others in the program from Brazil, China, India, Indon

26、esia, Italy, Korea, Malaysia, Spain, Turkey, and the U.S. The designers envisaged power coming from a V6 or V8 biturbo engine. All 20 students had begun the project, submitting their individual proposals. From these, 10 were selected and made as 1:4 clay models before Liokis proposal was selected an

27、d the entire class worked on the full-scale model. “We tried to make a modern interpretation of the sedan, ” explained Liokis, “so its kind of more fastback, the cabin is concentrated as much to the rear as possible to underline the rear wheel-drive proportions, and the main goal was to make one rea

28、l Alfa Romeo, respecting the origin of the brandall the classic models and all the elements that people expect of this brand. “The most important feature of the car is one characteristic line that runs all around the body. In this we hide the lights front and rear and the air scoop, while the door h

29、andles share the same line. It gives dynamism to the car at the front, and Alfa Romeo Gloria2 Concept Car Year in Review: 2013 there is one subline and all the volume is concen- trated on this part of the car like the old Disco Volante. So its kind of mixing between very traditional and elegant shap

30、es of Italian cars, with some modern sublines to give the dynamism of an Alfa Romeo. ” The car incorporates short leather straps on each side of the hood designed to echo the hood straps of classic racing Alfa Romeos. “They give a bit of the finesse of the Italianslike leather with nice details such

31、 as the stitching, ” con- tinued Liokis. “The face of the car includes the characteristic nose, the scudetto, the triangle of Alfa Romeo that we try to emphasize, and we try to separate these, so its a separate model in the middle of the front of the car. ” John Kendall Alfa Romeo Gloria The Glorias

33、anys future compact Q crossover SUV design language while serving as a platform to highlight an innovative chassis constructed with a combination of aluminum, carbon fiber, and fiberglass. The startling design of the floorpan and bodywork is enough to make it easy to overlook the Crosslane coupes pl

34、ug-in hybrid electric drivetrain with a 1.5-L I3 turbocharged gasoline engine. Audi calls the Crosslanes construction “multimaterial space frame. ” An aluminum cage surrounds the cockpit for crash protection, while the crash structures at the front and rear are carbon fiber, along with the inner sil

35、ls, central tunnel, bulkhead, and cross members. Surface bodywork is fiberglass, with carbon fiber reinforcement where necessary, to produce a complete body that Audi says is as light as a purely carbon fiber structure, but at less cost. The mass of the complete vehicle is 1390 kg (3060 lb) includin

36、g its lithi- um-ion battery pack. Furthermore, carbon fiber and aluminum carry prestige with buyers, which lets the company highlight their use through details like the hood vents that expose the underlying aluminum frame rails, said Audi Group Head Designer Wolfgang Egger. “It was important to have

37、 the authenticity of the materials, ” he said. “The frame is a sculpture. ” Unsurprisingly, though the company claims cost benefits compared to pure carbon fiber, it is obviously at a cost disadvantage to steel and is not destined for production in the immediate future. “It is not a production exerc

38、ise, ” Egger conceded. “This is for creating a new design language. ” He was careful to clarify that by “design” he did not mean “styling, ” but rather the overall engineer- ing of the vehicle. “Design is a lot of philosophy, ” he said. “Y ou have to decide whether to have something more or somethin

39、g less. We think less is more. ” Through this minimalist philosophy, Audi aims to deliver more value to customers, Egger said. The design incorporates a lightweight 10-kg (22-lb) removable roof panel that stows in the back Audi Crosslane4 Concept Car Year in Review: 2013 when the rear seats are fold

40、ed forward. The roof and the seats lock together to form a secure rear storage area even when the roof is open. The unusual hybrid drivetrain features a pair of electric motor/generators. One is an 85-kW trac- tion motor that powers the wheels and the other is a 50-kW device mated to the gasoline en

41、gine that acts primarily as a starter or alternator. The traction motor propels the Crosslane coupe by itself at speeds below 55 km/h (34 mph). Between 55 and 130 km/h (81 mph), the electric traction motor works with the 95-kW gasoline engine to propel the car. At speeds above 130 kph, the gasoline

42、engine has primary responsibility, but with some assist from its integrated starter/ generator as needed. Paying homage to Sergio Pininf

44、arina, who died last year, and the mid-engined configuration that he persuaded Enzo Ferrari to adopt in 1965, his namesake company, Pininfarina, devised a striking barchetta concept car, based on the running gear of the Ferrari 458 Spider, which was displayed at the 2013 Geneva Motor Show. The idea

45、of the Sergio concept was to present a modern view of a mid-en- gined barchetta, traditionally stripped of all excess equipment to save weight for competition use. Construction is from carbon fiber, and Pininfarina estimates that the Sergio is around 150 kg (330 lb) lighter than the 458 Spider, so h

46、as a mass of around 1280 kg (2820 lb). The carbon fiber body is reckoned to have a mass around 10% less than the original aluminum body of the 458 Spider. One of the most striking features of the car is the lack of a windscreen. Pininfarina says it has overcome the obvious difficulty this would crea

47、te for driver and passenger by using the aerodynamic deflector in front of the cockpit to create a “virtual” windshield by deflecting the airflow above the occupants heads and keeping them clear of turbulence. It is said to be effective at speeds down to 50 km/h (31 mph). The roll bar behind the coc

48、kpit has been designed as a wing surface and uses the deflected air to increase downforce on the rear drive axle. The rearview mirror has also been designed to help in diverting the airflow over occupants heads. Even so, the car is supplied with a matching pair of crash helmets, the result of collab

49、oration between Pininfarina Extra and Italian sports helmet manufacturer Newmax. The helmet color is matched to the body color of the car. Storage space is built into the cockpit for the helmets. The roll bar wing also serves another function. The headrests for the seats appear to be floating because they are not connected to the seats but attached to the wing. The open-mouthed front of the car with the spoiler under the front is not only part of the shape, but also designed to compensate for the lack of downforce generated b
