The jellyfish rarely moves on its own. The researchers,
19、 who used cameras to record the movement of the jellyfish for six days and nights, observed that the animals were 30% less active at night. However, to ensure that these animals, which have lived on the earth for 7over 650 million years, were sleeping and not just resting, they had to test for three
20、 requirements. The jellyfish should be disoriented(迷失方向的) when disturbed gently during their sleep, become active when awakened violently, and finally, be unable to function normally without enough sleep.The team began by gently moving the sleeping jellyfish from their preferred resting spot at the
21、bottom of the tank to the surface. They observed it took some time before the animals swam back to their original sleeping area, showing they were disoriented. In contrast, when the action was repeated 30 seconds later, the fully-awakened animals instantly returned to the bottom, meeting the second
22、requirement of sleep. To test how the creatures react to the lack of sleep, they kept the jellyfish awake the entire night by pouring water every 20 minutes.
