9、od for the designation of yarns. Technical Committee38, “Textiles”, of the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) agreed at its meeting in1960 to a proposal from Germany that a specialist sub-committee be appointed to deal with textile products for fishing nets. This action arose from

10、the increasing interest in standards matters being evinced by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations and other international bodies concerned with deep sea fishing. It had become evident that there was a need for ISO to examine the subject of fishing nets and produce such recomm

11、endations as were required to coordinate, on an international basis, the activities of the fishing industries of the maritime nations. The ISO sub-committee decided that urgent attention should be given to terminology, designation of nets and netting yarns and to methods of hanging nets and cutting

12、them to shape. The Ropes and Cordage Industry Standards Committee appointed a technical committee to organize the UK contribution to the ISO work and to develop as British Standards such ISO Recommendations as were relevant to the UK industry. This British Standard is based on ISO 858 1)(with which

13、it is in complete conformity) and is the first of a number that will cover the aspects being investigated by the ISO sub-committee. The designation of netting yarns in the Tex system will ultimately replace designations made according to traditional systems. The new designation will principally cons

14、ist in naming the resultant linear density. A British Standard does not purport to include all the necessary provisions of a contract. Users of British Standards are responsible for their correct application. Compliance with a British Standard does not of itself confer immunity from legal obligation

17、cation As a general rule, netting yarns designated by their linear density or their resultant linear density are grey yarns without preparation. If the indication of resultant linear density takes account of any effects of chemical or physical treatment, this should be mentioned. 3 Method of designa

18、tion 3.1 Yarns obtained by twisting 3.1.1 General usage, complete designation. The complete designation of a netting yarn shall comprise, in the order given, the following five characteristics: 1) The linear density of the single yarn, expressed in tex. 2) The number of single yarns in the first fol

19、d. 3) a) The number of folded yarns in the finished product, or, if suitable, b) the number of folded yarns, then cabled yarns in the finished product. 4) The resultant linear density, expressed in tex. 5) The final twist direction of the finished product. The first three characteristics shall be jo

20、ined to each other by the multiplication sign (); (if suitable, the number of cabled yarns is joined likewise to the number of folded yarns by the multiplication sign). The last two characteristics shall be separated from the first three by a semi-colon (;). The fourth characteristic (numeral value

21、of the resultant linear density) shall be preceded by the letter R. The fifth characteristic shall be indicated by the letters S or Z (see BS946 3) ). Example 1. 23 tex 6 3;R460tex Z. This designation characterizes a cabled netting yarn composed of three folded yarns each of which comprises six sing

22、le yarns of a nominal 4)linear density of23tex; the resultant linear density of this yarn is460tex; the final twist direction is Z. Example 2. 23 tex 6 5 3; R2400 tex S. This designation characterizes a cabled netting yarn composed of three cabled yarns of which each comprises five folded yarns them

23、selves composed of six single yarns of a nominal 4)linear density of23tex; the resultant linear density of this yarn is2400 tex; the final twist direction is S. 3.1.2 Particular cases: brief designation. Yarns composed of dissimilar components and heavy twisted trawl twines, complete designations of

24、 which would be too complicated, shall be designated by a) the resultant linear density, b) the final twist direction of the finished product. Example 3. Netting yarn R4000 tex S. 3.2 Yarns obtained by braiding. Braided netting yarns shall be designated only by their resultant linear density. Exampl

NOTEThe resultant linear density of a netting yarn is always different from the total linear density of the same yarn calculated from the linear densities of its components. Reverting to Example 1 (see3.1.1): If a netting yarn has a designation of 23 tex 6 3; R460tex Z,

26、calculation of the total linear density of this yarn on the basis of its components gives 6 3=18 yarns each of23tex, namely18 23tex =414tex. The difference between calculated total linear density in tex and the resultant linear density of R460tex, namely46tex, accrues from the twisting and cabling u

27、ndergone by the yarns, each one of these operations leading to an increase in the linear density of the yarns. 2) The linear density expressed in tex is the mass of 1 km of yarn (in g). 3) BS946, “Method for the designation of yarns”. 4) The term “nominal” indicates that the value is a matter of ref
