It supersedes BS5187:1975 which is withdrawn. BS3056:1973 has bee
、n superseded by BS3056-1 covering multipurpose bricks. This Part of BS3056 is one of a series of new Parts intended to cover bricks for a wide range of specific applications. This Part is concerned with refractory bricks for glass-melting furnaces. It includes such sizes and shapes used within the g
、lass industry that are already in BS3056-1 as well as those which are more specialized and for the glass industry alone. It therefore provides a complete document for the glass industry. This Part of BS3056 has been prepared taking into account the views of both manufacturers and users of refractory
、 bricks for the glass industry; it is therefore felt that it should find universal acceptance in this sector of British industry. The committee has carried out an extensive industrial survey which has been used as the basis for adopting the sizes specified in this Part of BS3056. Wherever possible,
、they have tried to adhere to guidelines for standardization based on this survey. Only sizes of bricks which are used in large quantities in industry and have been commonly accepted in the UK have been included. A further requirement has been for simplicity of shape to permit economical production i
、n mechanical brick press moulds. It is therefore intended that other shapes not included in this Part of BS3056 will be referred to as special categories. With this in mind, furnace designers are urged to take full account of this Part of BS3056; it is the designer of a furnace, rather than the manu
、facturer or purchaser of the refractories, who can play the greatest part in achieving rationalization and economy in the use of shaped refractory products. To assist designers, appendices to this Part of BS3056 provide formulae for the calculation of the number of tapered and circle refractory prod
、ucts required to form circles, and tables giving the combination of sizes to form circles of given diameters. Nothing in this Part of BS3056, however, should be taken to mean that refractory bricks will not be available in other shapes, other sizes or other combinations of size and material. The mat
、erials covered by this Part of BS3056 have been extended from BS5187, which dealt only with silica. Fireclay, high alumina, basic, zircon and insulating products are now included. In addition, to a limited extent, the use of fusion cast products, vacuum cast sillimanite and fused silica is covered.
、A British Standard does not purport to include all the necessary provisions of a contract. Users of British Standards are responsible for their correct application. Compliance with a British Standard does not of itself confer immunity from legal obligations. Summary of pages This document comprises
、a front cover, an inside front cover, pagesi andii, pages1 to26, an inside back cover and a back cover. This standard has been updated (see copyright date) and may have had amendments incorporated. This will be indicated in the amendment table on the inside front cover.BS3056-2:1985 BSI 09-1999 1 1
、Scope This Part of BS3056 specifies the sizes of the following shapes of refractory bricks for glass-melting furnaces: a) squares; b) splits; c) tiles; d) blocks; e) straights; f) side arch bricks; g) end arch bricks; h) crown bricks. NOTE 1Information is also given on the combinations of size and m
、aterial/quality that may be expected to be available, on arch-brick formulae (seeAppendix A), on the combinations of sizes required to form circles of various diameters (seeAppendix B), and on information to be supplied by a purchaser (seeAppendix C). The volume of each standard size brick is given
