9、Arubber or thermoset elastomer that has not had any additionalwork, diluents incorporated, processes performed on it, or anycombination thereof. A rubber that is in an unmodified state orone in which no attempt has been made to alter it in any fashionas received from the manufacturer or supplier.4.

10、Materials and Manufacture4.1 Gaskets shall be made of a properly vulcanized virgincompound containing virgin rubber as the sole elastomer withno scrap or reclaim.5. Physical Requirements Physical Requirements5.1 Sample gaskets selected as specified in Section 8 shallconform to the requirements for p

11、hysical properties listed inTable 1 when tested in accordance with the methods specifiedin Section 9.6. Dimensions and Permissible Variations6.1 Gaskets shall conform to the dimensions specified bythe manufacturer.6.2 All cross-sectional dimensions shall have an RMAClass3 tolerance as shown in Annex

Workmanship7.1 The surface of the gasket shall be

15、 smooth and free ofpitting, cracks, blisters, air marks, and any other imperfectionsthat will affect its behavior in service. The body of the gasketshall be free of porosity and air pockets.7.2 Neither the flash thickness nor the flash extension shallexceed 0.8 mm (132 in.), at any point on the seal

16、ing ring.7.3 The offset, or failure of the mold to register accurately,shall not exceed 0.4 mm (164 in.).8. Sampling8.1 For each of the tests, gaskets shall be selected at randomas required by the method of test specified.9. Test Methods9.1 HardnessThe gasket material shall be tested forhardness in

17、accordance with ASTM Test Method D 2240. TestMethod D 1415 shall be used as the referee method. Hardnessmeasurements shall be made on specimens prepared in accor-dance with 9.2. However, hardness readings for guidancepurposes shall be permitted to be taken directly on the gasket,recognizing that the

18、se readings may vary slightly from thosetaken on the dumb-bell specimens.9.2 Elongation and Tensile StrengthThe gasket materialshall be tested for elongation and tensile strength in accordancewith Test Methods D 412. Standard ASTM Type C dumb-bellspecimens conforming to Fig. 1 (Apparatus for Tensile

19、 SetTest) of Test Methods D 412 shall be cut from a section of thegasket for this test. To obtain a uniform thickness, these gasketsections shall be permitted to be buffed prior to cutting intodumb-bell specimens, so as to produce a finely ground surfacewithout cuts or burns.9.3 Tear Strength The ga

20、sket material shall be tested fortear strength in accordance with Test Method D 624 using DieC.9.4 Compression Set The gasket material shall be testedfor compression set in accordance with Test Methods D 395using Method B. Specimens shall be aged in an oven for 22 hat 70 6 1C (158 6 2F). Where plied

21、 specimens arenecessary, the results shall comply with the requirements ofTable 1.9.5 Heat AgingThe gasket material shall be tested foreffects of heat aging in accordance with 9.2, and shall be agedfor96hat706 1C (158 6 2F). Hardness measurementsshall be made as specified in 9.1.9.6 Water Absorption

22、The gasket material shall be testedfor weight increase due to water absorption in accordance withTest Method D 471. If a 25.4-mm (1-in.) specimen cannot becut from the sample gasket, the greatest width obtainable shallbe used. The test specimen shall be immersed in distilled waterat 70 6 1C (158 6 2

23、F) for 7 days.9.7 Ozone ResistanceThe gasket material shall be testedfor ozone resistance in accordance with Test Method D 1149,using specimens and procedure specified under Method B. Theozone concentration shall be 150 parts/100 000 000 of air byvolume. Specimens shall be aged 100 6 1h at 40 6 1C (

24、1046 2F). A two-power hand magnifying glass shall be used toexamine the gasket for cracks.9.8 Oil Immersion The gasket material shall be tested forvolume decrease due to oil absorption in accordance with TestMethod D 471. If a 25.4 mm (1-in.) specimen cannot be cutfrom the sample gasket, the greates

25、t width obtainable shall beused. The test specimen shall be immersed in IRM 903 for 706 0.7 h at 100 6 1C (212 6 2F).10. Certification10.1 When specified in the purchase order or contract, thepurchaser shall be furnished certification stating samples rep-resenting each lot have been tested and inspe

26、cted as indicatedin this specification and the requirements have been met. Whenspecified in the purchase order or contract, a report of the testresults shall be furnished.11. Marking11.1 Mark each gasket with clearly legible letters notexceeding 6.35 mm (14 in.) in height. These markings shallinclud

27、e the gasket manufacturers name or symbol, the pipesize and class (such as NH for no hub, SV for service, XH forextra heavy), country of origin and the ASTM specificationdesignation. Rubber Compression gaskets shall be required tohave the year of manufacture in addition to the other requiredmarkings
