Scope1.1 This specification covers the material characteristics,physical requirements, and sampling appropriate to the selec-tion of marble for general building and str
3、uctural purposes.1.2 Dimension marble shall include stone that is sawed, cut,split, or otherwise finished or shaped into blocks, slabs or tiles,and shall specifically exclude molded, cast and artificiallyaggregated units composed of fragments, and also crushed andbroken stone.2. Terminology3.1 DefinitionsAll definitions are in accordance with Ter-minology C119.3.1.1 marble,
6、 na crystalline rock composed predomi-nantly of one or more of the following minerals: calcite anddolomite capable of taking a polish (see Terminology C119).4. Classification4.1 Dimension marble is classified as follows:4.1.1 I Calcite.4.1.2 II Dolomite.NOTE 1See Terminology C119for definitions of c
7、alcite and dolo-mite.5. Soundness5.1 Marbles are further classified into four “Soundness”groups. The basis of this classification is the characteristicsencountered in fabrication and has no reference whatsoever tocomparative merit or value. The classifications merely indicatewhat method of fabricati
8、on is considered necessary and accept-able in each instance, as based on standard trade practice.Marble is classified by its producer.5.2 The Soundness classifications indicate what repairs maybe necessary prior to or during installation, based on standardtrade practices.5.3 The groupings A, B, C, a
9、nd D, should be taken intoaccount when specifying marble, for all marbles are notsuitable for all building applications. This is particularly true ofthe comparatively fragile marbles classified under SoundnessGroups C and D, which may need additional fabrication beforeor during installation. Only So
10、undness Group A marble shouldbe used for structural, load bearing purposes.5.3.1 The four groups are:5.3.1.1 Group ASound marbles with uniform and favor-able working qualities; containing no geological flaws, voids,spalls, cracks, open seams, pits or other defects.5.3.1.2 Group BMarble similar in so
11、undness to Group A,but with less favorable working qualities; may have naturalfaults; and may require a limited amount of one or more of thefollowing: waxing3, sticking4, and filling5.5.3.1.3 Group CMarble with some variations in workingqualities; geological flaws, voids, and lines of separation are

It does not refer to the application of paste wax to make the surface
15、sshinier.4Sticking describes the butt edge repair of a broken piece now generally donewith dowels, cements or epoxies.
