27、.1Biological materials 5.1.1Soil Naturaltopsoilorafertileloambasedhorticulturalsoil 1) ofpH6topH8andnotcontainingaddedagrochemicals. Itshallhaveawaterholdingcapacity(WHC)ofbetween25%( m/m)and60%( m/m). NOTE1 AsuitablemethodfordeterminingWHCisdescribedinannexB. 1) AhorticulturalsoiloftheJohnInnesNo.2

28、typeandwiththefollowingcompositionhasbeenfoundtobesuitable;seven partsbyvolumeloam,threepartsbyvolumesphagnumpeat,twopartsbyvolumesharpsandplus0,6gchalkand6,0gslow releasefertilizerperlitreofsoilmixture.IftheWHCistoohigh,itcanbeloweredbymodifyingthesoilwiththeaddition ofsand.Page6 ENV807:2001 Ifanat

29、uralsoilisused,itshallhavetheturfortop50mmremovedandshallnotbetakenfromadepthbelow 200mmfromtheoriginalsurface.Itshallbepassedthroughasieveofnominalaperturesize12,5mm.Ifitis necessarytostorethesoilpriortouse,itshallbestoredinclosedmoistureproofcontainers.Beforeuse, thoroughlymixthesampleofsoil. NOTE

30、2 Thesoilshouldonlybecollectedinamoistcondition. Ifahorticulturalsoilisusedwhichissterilizedduringitspreparation,then20%( m/m)ofanaturalsoil,preparedas above,shallbeaddedandthesoilsthoroughlymixedpriortothestartofthetest. 41、pecimens 7.1 Speciesofwood Thefollowingspeciesshallbeusedforthetest: Scots pine ( Pinussylvestris Linnaeus)forproductsintendedtobeusedonsoftwoods; beech ( Fagussylvatica Linnaeus)forproductsintendedtobeusedonhardwoods. NOTE Additionaltestsmaybecarriedoutusingotherspeciesbut,ifso,thisshouldbestatedin

42、thetestreport. 7.2Wood quality Thewoodshallbefreefromcracks,stain,decay,insectdamageandotherdefects.Thewoodshallnothavebeen waterstored,floated,chemicallytreatedorsteamed. NOTE Woodthathasbeenkilndriedattemperaturesbelow60Cmaybeused. TheScotspineshallbeexclusivelysapwoodcontaininglittleresinandhavin

43、gbetween2,5annualgrowthringsper 10mmandeightannualgrowthringsper10mm.Theproportionoflatewoodintheannualringsshallnotexceed 30%ofthewhole. Thebeechshallbeevengrained,freefromtylosesanddiscolouration.Itshallhavebetweentwoannualgrowth ringsper10mmandsixannualgrowthringsper10mm. 7.3 Provisionoftestspecimens Conditionthewoodto(122)%(m/m)moisturecontent.Prepareplanedstripshavingacrosssectionof (100,1)mm (5 0,1)mm.Thelongitudinalfacesshallbeparalleltothedirectionofthegrain.TheannualringsPage8 ENV807:2001 shallhaveacontactangleof(90 15)tothebroadfaces.M
