11、sInformation about this documentThe initial drafting of this British Standard was produced in association with BISas part of their ongoing programme of support for standardization.The focus of this British Standard is on the sustainable management of floodrisks arising from surface water run-off on
12、development sites, although criteriarelating to the management of a wider suite of environmental risks is given. Thebenefits that can accrue from surface water drainage systems are highlightedand relevant references provided.This British Standard has been developed to support:1) planners and drainag
13、e approval bodies: in setting consistent drainagecriteria and principles (for new developments and redevelopments) thatdeliver effective surface water flood risk management as sustainably aspossible while contributing towards the delivery of relevant environmental,sustainability and urban design pla
14、nning objectives for the site and localarea.2) designers: in planning and implementing safe, robust surface watermanagement systems that meet the criteria and principles referred to in 1).Use of this documentAs a code of practice, this British Standard takes the form of guidance andrecommendations.
15、It should not be quoted as if it were a specification andparticular care should be taken to ensure that claims of compliance are notmisleading.Any user claiming compliance with this British Standard is expected to be able tojustify any course of action that deviates from its recommendations.It has b
16、een assumed in the preparation of this British Standard that theexecution of its provisions will be entrusted to appropriately qualified andexperienced people, for whose use it has been produced.Presentational conventionsThe provisions of this standard are presented in roman (i.e. upright) type. 21、comprised subsurface pipeconveyance and tank storage systems that drain and control run-off fromdevelopment sites. These drainage systems have generally been designed tomeet the criteria set out in Sewers for Adoption N1, Sewers for Scotland N2and Sewers for Adoption Northern Ireland N3) in order to
22、 secure long-termadoption and ownership of the infrastructure from local sewerage undertakers.It is recognized that the rapid subsurface drainage of developed impermeablesurfaces, even with controlled discharges for extreme events, is still likely toincrease flood risk for the receiving catchment an
23、d adversely affect the localhydrological and morphological balances. In addition, there is a significant riskof pollution to the receiving environment as a result of:a) urban surface water run-off contaminants being discharged directly towatercourses;b) foul sewage contaminants contained within the
24、discharged surface waterrun-off as a result of misconnections; and/orc) the operation of combined sewer overflows during periods of extremerainfall.Sustainable drainage systems (SuDS) are required to:a) minimize the change in the hydrological regime resulting from theurbanization of the area (and as
