NOTE

NOTE 2The title of the publication referred to in this standard is listed on the inside back cover. 2 Definitions For the purposes of this Part of BS6407 the following definitions apply. 2.1 cage pallet a special des

14、ign of pallet having a super structure of four attached, collapsible, vertical sides, usually slatted or mesh, manufactured in accordance with BS6407-1 2.2 retail use use in shops, stores, supermarkets and hypermarkets selling to the general public and in cash and carry wholesale warehouses 2.3 pall

15、et handling truck a truck with two elevating type fingers (forks) operated by mechanical linkage or hydraulic pump to enable a cage pallet to be elevated just clear of the ground for movement 2.4 pallet stacking truck a truck fitted with mast, forks and elevating mechanism capable of transporting, r

16、aising and lowering cage pallets for the purposes of stacking 3 Loading 3.1 As the rating of300kg relates to a load uniformly distributed over the base of the cage pallet, products to be loaded should be restricted to those providing such a uniformly distributed load. 3.2 Cage pallets should be erec

17、ted in accordance with the manufacturers instructions. 3.3 The cage pallet should be loaded or packed uniformly and tightly so far as it is reasonably practicable, so as to avoid damage resulting from the movement of the load during handling and transportation. 3.4 The total mass of the contents pac

18、ked into the cage pallet should not exceed the stated rating(300kg). 4 Handling (including stacking) 4.1 Mechanical handling equipment 4.1.1 General. In every operation, care should be taken to ensure that the handling equipment is suitable for the load and is used in accordance with the manufacture

19、rs recommendations. 1) 4.1.2 Pallet stacking trucks. Pallet stacking trucks should be fitted with forks, the distance between the outer edges of which is not less than560mm and not greater than690mm. Alternatively, trucks should be fitted with forks capable of being adjusted to within these dimensio

20、ns. If the forks are longer than the narrow dimension of the cage pallet (i.e.designed to handle two cage pallets simultaneously), then a pallet stop should be fitted which will enable a single pallet to be handled in the recommended manner (see4.2.2) without forks protruding beyond the one cage pal

21、let. The pallet stop should be retractable and fitted to the fork carriage of the truck in such a manner that, in the retracted position, it will not foul any moving parts. 4.1.3 Pallet handling trucks. The dimensions of the forks of a pallet handling truck should be as given in4.1.2. 4.2 General ha

22、ndling 4.2.1.1 Cage pallets should be supported by their four bottom feet except when being moved with suitable lifting equipment. 4.2.1.2 Before an erected cage pallet is moved, e.g.lifted, stacked or transported, all sides and gates should be properly secured in accordance with the manufacturers i

23、nstructions. Before collapsed pallets are moved they should be completely collapsed in accordance with the manufacturers instructions. 4.2.2 Pallet movement 4.2.2.1 Lifting and handling should be carried out with the forks of the handling equipment inserted into the space beneath the cage pallet spe

24、cifically designed for this purpose. Forks should extend into the cage pallet to a distance of at least75% of the dimension parallel to the fork, but should not protrude from the opposite side. (See4.1.2 and4.1.3.) 1) Guidance on the safe use and operation of trucks is given in the Health and Safety

25、 Executive Booklet HSG6 Lift trucks, obtainable from HMSO.BS6407-2:1984 2 BSI 12-1999 4.2.2.2 Care should be taken to avoid damage when handling cage pallets, e.g.by raising and lowering them carefully, not dragging them over the ground or flooring or over other cage pallets, and by careful driving

26、to avoid collisions. 4.2.2.3 Erected cage pallets should not be handled more than three high. 4.2.2.4 Collapsed cage pallets should not be handled more than seven high. 4.2.2.5 Stacks containing both loaded and unloaded erected cage pallets should not be handled on any truck. 4.2.3 Stacking 4.2.3.1

27、A firm level surface (maximum gradient1%) should be provided, clear of obstructions and projections which might damage the structure of the cage pallet. Cage pallets should not be stacked on uneven surfaces. 4.2.3.2 When forming or re-forming a stack, all cage pallets should be correctly erected and

28、 secured in accordance with the manufacturers instructions. This should be checked before any cage pallet is lifted or lowered. 4.2.3.3 Empty erected cage pallets should be removed from a stack as soon as it is reasonably practicable to do so. 4.2.3.4 When stacking, the operative should ensure that

29、the superimposed cage pallet is properly located using the locating devices provided, in accordance with the manufacturers instructions. Any pallet which is damaged and is causing, or likely to cause instability or misalignment of the stack, should be removed and placed aside for inspection (see7.2)

30、. 4.2.3.5 When stacking erected cage pallets, the height should be restricted to five cage pallets high. 4.2.3.6 When building a five high stack of erected cage pallets, two cages should be placed on top of a three high stack rather than one cage on top of a four high stack. 4.2.3.7 Collapsed cage p

31、allets may be stacked fourteen high, but should not be stacked with loaded or erected pallets. 4.2.4 Operations with pallet stacking trucks 4.2.4.1 The operator/driver should: a) fully lower the forks of a truck and immobilize it before leaving it for any purpose; b) “trail” the load rather than “pu

32、sh”, wherever possible; c) if the length of the forks is greater than600mm, always operate the pallet stop before entering into the long side of the cage pallet when building stacks or removing cage pallets from a stack. 4.2.4.2 The operator/driver should never: a) lift more than three erected cages

33、 at any time (see4.1.1); b) allow any person to walk underneath a raised load; c) travel with the load or forks in the elevated position except as necessary during the building of stacks, or the removal of cage pallets from stacks; d) turn with the load or forks in the elevated position. 5 Transport

34、ation 5.1 Height of load 5.1.1 Erected cage pallets should not be stacked more than three high on any road vehicle. 5.1.2 Collapsed cage pallets should not be stacked more than seven high on any road vehicle. 5.2 Loading 5.2.1 Before loading ensure that all sides and gates of erected cage pallets ar

35、e properly secured in accordance with the manufacturers instructions. 5.2.2 To prevent any movement of the cage pallet in the carrying vehicle which might lead to damage or injury to personnel, the cage pallet should be secured during transportation. Cage pallet gate hooks should not be used to secu

36、re the pallets. 5.2.3 When trucks are used to handle cage pallets on and off vehicles, they should be used in accordance with clause4. 6 Sales floor operations 6.1 General 6.1.1 The speed of a powered truck on the sales floor in the presence of the public should be limited to normal pedestrian walki

37、ng speed, i.e.5.6km/h (3“ miles/h) maximum. 6.1.2 Where it is reasonably practicable, the transfer of cage pallets to the sales floor should be carried out when the public are not present. 6.2 Stacking (see also 4.1.1 and 4.2.3)BS6407-2:1984 BSI 12-1999 3 6.2.1 Displays should be restricted to the f

38、ollowing maximum stacking heights: 6.2.2 If trucks are used in the presence of the public, any movement involving lifting and lowering of one or more cage pallets on overhead racking should always be supervised by a member of the staff authorized by store management. 6.2.3 Where cages are stacked th

39、ree high on overhead racking in the sales area, the top cage of the stack should not be placed or removed singly. 6.3 Public access. As far as practicable, public access to stacks of cage pallets should be restricted in such a way that it is not possible to select goods from above the three high lev

40、el. 7 Maintenance 7.1 General. It is the cage pallets users responsibility to ensure that all equipment in use is properly maintained and to withdraw from the system anything considered unsafe. 7.2 Damage to cage pallets 7.2.1 Cage pallets should be examined for damage by all users on delivery when

41、loaded and before despatch when collapsed. Where a damaged cage pallet is found it should not be used and should be isolated and identified as damaged. 7.2.2 A cage pallet should be regarded as damaged and withdrawn from use if it has any of the following defects: a) the feet or spigots are misalign

42、ed so they do not locate correctly; b) any defective fastening; c) individual broken welds in the area of the feet or spigots; d) multiple broken welds or extensive corrosion likely to affect the structural integrity of the cage pallet. 7.3 Repair of cage pallets. The cage pallet owner is responsibl

43、e for the repair of a damaged cage pallet and its reinstatement to meet the requirements of BS6407-1. Wherever practicable, repairs should only be carried out by the manufacturer or his authorized agents. 8 Staff training 8.1 All personnel involved in the handling of cage pallets should be properly

44、trained in the correct procedures for their assembly and loading, and in the operation of pallet handling trucks, in accordance with the manufacturers instructions (see4.1.1). 8.2 Only authorized and trained personnel should operate pallet stacking trucks. The truck operators should have attended an

45、d successfully completed a recognized training course.
