10、ommittee to specify requirements for insulating jackets to reduce the heat loss from domestic hot water cylinders. It supersedes BS 5615:1978 which is withdrawn. The main change from the 1978 edition is a reduction in the permitted heat loss from 3 kWh per 24 h to 2.5 kWh per 24 h. The test apparatu
11、s has been improved without altering the basic method of test. Minor changes have been made to many clauses, in the light of experience gained from use of this standard over the last5years. A British Standard does not purport to include all the necessary provisions of a contract. Users of British St
12、andards are responsible for their correct application. Compliance with a British Standard does not of itself confer immunity from legal obligations. This will be indicated in the amendment table on the inside front cover.BS 5615:1985 BSI 07-1999 1 1 Scope This British Standard specifies requirements for the performance, materials, design and marking of insul
14、ating jackets for use with domestic hot water storage cylinders complying with the dimensional requirements of BS 699 or BS 1566. This standard is not applicable to insulation for combination vessels complying with BS 3198, rectangular vessels complying with BS 417-2 and factory insulated cylinders.
15、 The performance test described in this standard is applicable to one size of cylinder jacket only, but provision is made for the claiming of compliance with this standard of cylinder jackets of other sizes. NOTEThe titles of the publications referred to in this standard are listed on the inside bac
16、k cover. 2 Definitions For the purposes of this British Standard the following definitions, together with those given in BS 3533 and BS 4422, apply. 2.1 cylinder a closed cylindrical vessel with domed ends 2.2 jacket a detachable insulating cover for the top and sides of a vertical cylindrical hot w
17、ater storage vessel 2.3 standing heat loss the energy consumed in 24 h when an electronically controlled immersion heater is used to maintain the temperature of water in a cylinder at 50 C above the surrounding air temperature 2.4 three term controller a controller that has proportional, integral an
18、d derivative modes of control 3 Design and manufacture 3.1 The jacket shall be constructed to fit closely and to cover the sides and top of the hot water storage cylinder for which it is designed. It shall also be constructed to fit closely round all British Standard pipe connections, immersion heat
19、ers and thermostats mounted in the horizontal or vertical positions given in BS 699 and BS 1566. 3.2 The jacket shall be provided with means to enable it to be secured closely round the vent pipe. 3.3 The length of the jacket shall be such that when fitted closely round the vent pipe, the lower edge
20、 of the insulation is not more than 20 mm above the base of the cylinder. 3.4 Each jacket or segment of a jacket shall incorporate a mechanical means of securing the insulating material within the covering material. 3.5 A horizontal or a vertical joint in the insulating material is permitted in each
21、 jacket or segment of a jacket. Where a horizontal joint is made, the insulating material shall be overlapped or interleaved by at least 100 mm, and the upper portion shall be mechanically secured within the cover. Where a vertical joint is made, both portions shall be mechanically secured within th
22、e cover. 3.6 Means shall be provided to secure the jacket closely round the side of the cylinder. This shall either be in the form of a minimum of three fixings equally spaced at not more than 300 mm apart, with the lowest fixing being not more than 150 mm from the base of the tank and the highest f
23、ixing not more than 150 mm below the start of the domed top of the cylinder or in the form of a continuous vertical fastening extending from not more than 150 mm above the base of the tank to not more than 150 mm below the start of the domed top. 3.7 Where fixing bands or tapes are used for retainin
24、g the jacket in place they shall have a length at least equal to the external circumference of the jacket on the cylinder plus an allowance of 150 mm for fastening. The breaking force of each fixing band or tape at23 2 C shall be not less than 40 N when tested using a grade A tensile testing machine
