2、2: Determination of bonding quality using the knife test. This method of determining bonding quality was used to demonstrate conformity to the bonding quality requirements of BS 1088:1966. It has been shown over many years to produce reasonably consistent results; it is quick and simple to perform a

Its main limitations are that some physical strength is required and that operators need training and experience before they are able to make consistent visual assessments. Since verification of conformity to BS 1088-1 may be made by any competent testing body whi

The knife test is, however, still widely used by manufacturers and has, therefore, been retained as a quality control test. BS 1088-1 specifies that whe

In addition, a separate set of test pieces is either immersed in boiling water or subjected to steam. Following thi

The amount of adherent wood fibre is then assessed visually, compared to a master scale comprising a series of standard photographs and allocated a bonding quality number between 1 and 10. 4 Apparatus 4.1 Cranked

NOTE The face of the backstop can become damaged in use and should be easily renewable or replaceable. 4.3 Rack, capable of holding test pieces with their faces vertical and sep

NOTE Loss by evaporation can be reduced if the tank has a tight-fitting lid and a condenser allowing the water vapour to reflux. 4.6 Autoclave 1) , heated by live steam and capable of maintaining an internal pressure of eithe

Place the test pieces in the rack (4.3) and place the rack in the water bath. Ensure that there is
