It provides a basis for uniformity in engineering drawing sizeand format that industry and government can utilize. It is not the intent of th

19、is Standard toprevent individual organizations from designing specific formats that meet their individual needs,but rather to provide common engineering delineation standards to aid the interchange of draw-ings between industry, government, and other users.This Standard is a revision of ASME Y14.1-2

20、005, Drawing Sheet Size and Format. Work onthe revision of this Standard began in October 2010 in Tucson, Arizona, by the members ofSubcommittee 1.The following is a summary of the significant changes that were incorporated into this revision:(a) Added ASME Y14 Series Conventions section.(b) Revised

21、 various definitions to match those listed in ASME Y14.100.(c) Added definition for field of drawing and updated Figs. 4-1 through 4-3.(d) Expanded zoning practices to address continuous and repetitive zoning methods.(e) Microfilming practices are now listed as optional.(f) Introduced DAI (design ac

22、tivity identification), replacing CAGE Code.(g) Addressed revision status of sheets block for multiple-sheet drawings that are maintainedat the same revision level.(h) Made the location of the angle of projection block optional (within or adjacent to the titleblock).(i) Added zone numbers to Fig. 4-

23、3.(j) Lengthened K-size drawing sheets from 143 in. to 176 in. and expanded the maximumnumber of zones from 26 to 32 to match that of J-size drawing sheets.(k) Changed reference to ASME Y14.5 in Fig. 10-1.Where this Standard is specified as a requirement in a document, its defined requirements areas

37、 in ASME Y14.1M. For engineeringdrawing preparation and practices, see ASME Y14.100.1.2 PurposeStandardization of drawing sheet sizes and the uni-form location of format features on drawing forms pro-vides definite advantages in readability, handling, filing,and reproduction. In using drawing sheets

38、 made byother organizations, an advantage is gained when likeitems of information are in the same location on alldrawing sheets, and when uniformity of form and lan-guageisappliedin makinginformationentries.Revisioninformation and dates are of particular importance tousers of drawings and should be

39、located and expresseduniformly on all engineering drawings.The widespread use and exchange of reduced-sizecopies of drawing sheets both within and between orga-nizations emphasizes the importance of standardizationof drawing sheet size and format.1.3 ASME Y14 Series ConventionsThe conventions in par

40、as. 1.3.1 through 1.3.10 are usedin this and other ASME Y14 series of standards.1.3.1 Mandatory, Nonmandatory, Guidance, andOptional Words(a) The words “shall” and “will” establish a manda-tory requirement.(b) The words “should” and “may” establish a recom-mended practice.(c) The words “typical,” “e

41、xample,” “for reference,”or the Latin abbreviation “e.g.” indicate suggestionsgiven for guidance only.(d) The word “or” used in conjunction with a manda-tory requirement or a recommended practice indicatesthat there are two or more options for complying withthe stated requirement or practice.1.3.2 C

Cross-referenceof standards in text with or without a date followingthe standard identity shall be interpreted as follows:(a) Reference to other ASME Y14 series of standardsin the textwithout a date followingthe standard identity1indicates the issue of the standard as id

The fol-lowing examples define the invocation of a standardwhen specified in the Reference section and referencedin the text of this Standard:(a) When a referenced standard is cited in the textwith no limitations to a specific subject or paragraph(s)ofthestandard,theentirestandardisinvoked.Forexa

45、m-ple, “dimensioning and tolerancing shall be in accor-dance with ASME Y14.5” is invoking the completestandard because the subject of the standard is dimen-sioning and tolerancing and no specific subject of para-graph(s) within the standard are invoked.(b) When a referenced standard is cited in the

46、textwith limitations to a specific subject or paragraph(s) ofthe standard, only the paragraph(s) on that subject isinvoked. For example, “assign part or identifying num-bers in accordance with ASME Y14.100” is only invokingthe paragraph(s) on part or identifying numbers becausethe subject of the sta

47、ndard is engineering drawing prac-tices and part or identifying numbers is a specific subjectwithin the standard.(c) When a reference standard is cited in the text with-out an invoking statement such as “in accordance with,”the standard is for guidance only. For example, “forgaging principles see AS

48、ME Y14.43”is only for guidanceand no portion of the standard is invoked.1.3.4 Parentheses Following a Definition. When adefinition is followed by a standard referenced in paren-theses, the standard referenced in parentheses is thesource for the definition.1.3.5 Notes. Notes depicted in this Standard

49、 inALL UPPERCASE letters are intended to reflect actualdrawing entries. Notes depicted in initial uppercase orlowercase letters are to be considered supporting datato the contents of this Standard and are not intendedfor literal entry on drawings. A statement requiring theaddition of a note with the qualifier “such as” is arequirement to add a note, and the content of the textis allowed to vary to suit the application.ASME Y14.1-20121.3.6 Acronyms and Abbreviations. Acronyms andabbreviations are spelled out the first time used in thisStandard followed by the
