8、-Microfilm Jackets, ANSUAHM MSll-1987.) Microfilm jackets are one type of updatable microform. They are a means of converting units of in- formation on roll microfilm into interrelated units of in- formation in sheet form. Jackets also permit the addition or replacement of film images. In order to a

9、void user confusion, standardization of some basic requirements for microfilm jackets has become necessary. This standard covers those basic requirements. It should be noted that microfilm jackets are used in an information system composed not only of jackets but also of other equipment. This standa

10、rd addresses the com- patibility of jackets in a user environment which may also include file cabinets, readers, reader-printers and duplicators. The microfilm jackets may or may not be com- patible with all types of jacket loaders. The microfilm jacket consists of a support sheet as the supporting

11、and carrying element and an emulsion sheet (which is usualy thinner) affixed to the support sheet at a channel separation area to form the film channel into which the microfilm can be inserted. The emulsion sheet is the contact printing surface. First-generation or camera microfilm from a planetary

12、or rotary camera with no mirror or an even mirror op- tical system is right reading through the base of the film. Second-generation duplicate film or camera microfilm from an odd mirror optical system is reverse reading through the base of the film. It is genemlly preferred that first-generation mic

13、rofilm be inserted into a jacket so that the emulsion surface of the film is in contact with the emulsion sheet. Then the microfilm is right reading through the support sheet side; the titling or indexing information is facing the viewer and is also right reading. To assure problem-free operation du

14、ring loading or copying, it is recommended that only microfilm strips or individual images of the same film thickness be loaded in any one film channel. 24、rements 4.1 Size of Microfilm Jacket. The external dimensions of the microfilm jacket shall be: TYPE A: 105.0 mm + 0.00 mm x 148.0 mm f 0.25 mm - 0.75 (4.13 inches + 0.00 inch x 5.83 inches f 0.009 inches) - 0.029 inch TYPE B: 103.187 mm f 0.40 mm x 152.4 mm f 0.40 mm (4.063 inches f .O16 inch x 6.0

25、0 inches f .O16 inches) 4.2 Film Channel Width. The film channel width shall be at minimum 16.3 mm (0.64 inch) for 16 mm film and 35.4 mm (1.39 inches) for 35 mm microfilm. For other width films, the film channel width shall be adequate to accept the film for which the jacket was designed. 4.3 Inser

26、tion Openings. The film insertion openings shall be located between the heading area and the base area within a maximum of 6.00 mm (0.238 inch) from the edge of the jacket and are normally on the right. 4.4 Microfilm Jacket Locating Reference Points. When locating holes are used for positioning the

27、jacket on loading equipment, the reference line shail be the center line of the locating holes. The holes, size, location, and dimen- sions shall be in accordance with Figure 1 and Table 1. All center lines are horizontal lines. When locating holes are not used, the reference line shall be the botto

28、m edge of the jacket with dimensions in accordance with Figure 1 and Table 1. The hole farthest from the insertion open- ing may be a round or slotted hole. 4.5 Heading Area and Orientation. The height shall be at least 3.5 mm (-14 inch). When the jacket is held so that the heading is right reading

29、and upright, the microimages shall be right reading. 4.6 Parallelism. All channels shall be parallel either to the center line of the two locating holes, if they appear, or to the bottom edge of the jacket with 0.20 mm (.O08 inch) over the full edge of the jacket. To protect the film, care should be

34、 holes, if they appear, or to the bottom edge of the jacket within 0.15 mm (.O06 inch) for each 25.0 mm (.98 inch) of height of the microfilm jacket. 48 Curl or Bow. An empty microfilm jacket shall not curl or bow in any direction more than 6.5 mm (0.256 inch) when placed on a flat surface (see sect

35、ion 6.1). 49 Heading Area Coating. For duplication purposes, the coating shall transmit sufficient actinic energy (light) to permit duplication (see section 4.16). 4.10 Writing Quality. The heading area coating shall ac- cept the markings of No. 2 lead pencils, ball point and permanent felt pens, an

36、d black carbon-type ribbons (see section 4.16). 4.ll Creases, Scratches, Blemishes. Creases, scratches, or blemishes on the microfilm jacket that interfere with either viewing or reproducing the image on the film are not acceptable. 4.12 Flammability. The microfilm jacket shall conform to ANSI PH1.2

37、5-1984. 4.W Identification Cut. If any identification cut or notch is used to indicate emulsion sheet orientation, the loca- tion shall conform to ANSI PH1.19-1986. The use of a rounded or straight corner cut or a notch for filing or in- dexing purposes is not precluded by this standard. 4.14 Film D

38、amage. It shall be possible to insert or remove any film strip without damage that would interfere with viewing or reproduction. 4.15 Duplication. When a duplicate is made from a microfilm jacket, the resolution loss shall be no more than as specified in section 6.2. 4.16 Materials. All materials us

39、ed in the manufacture of microfilm jackets shall conform to ANSI PH1.53-1984. 5. Indexing Methods 5.1 Color Stripe. When used, the color stripe shall be 1.2 mm f .4 mm (.O47 inch f 0.16 inch) wide along the top edge of the heading area (see section 4.16). 5.2 Code Notch. When a code notch is used wi

An empty microfilm jacket shall be placed convex side down on a flat surface in a 20C to 30C (68F to 88F), 35 percent to 70 percent relative humidity atmosphere for at least six hours, after which time no part of the jacket shall be more than 6.35 mm (0.249 inch) above the surface. Measure the cur

44、l or bow by holding a scale (linear rule) perpendicular to the flat surface and as close as possible to where a curl or bow occurs. Measure the amount of curl and bow at eye level. 6.2 Duplication. Duplicates shall be made on a contact printer from a film image containing a test chart meeting the re

45、quirements of ANSVISO 3334-1979. One duplicate shall be made by direct contact between the film original and the duplicate film. A second duplicate shall be made with the same film contained in a microfilm jacket at the same exposure. Both duplicates shall then be examined with a microscope and the

46、resolution read as described in ANSUIS0 3334-1979. It should be noted that there are many other sizes and styles of microfilm jackets currently being manufactured and commonly used. Some of the most common sizes are: 76.20 mm x 127.00 mm (3 inches x 5 inches) 85.73 mm x 1

48、27.00 mm (3.375 inches x 5 inches) 85.73 mm x 187.33 mm (3.375 inches x 7.375 inches) 82.55 mm x 187.33 mm (3.25 inches x 7.375 inches) 101.10 mm x 128.69 mm (3.98 inches x 5.07 inches) It is recommended that users of microfilm jackets select a size suitable for their systems requirement. The preferred size is stated in this standard. This standard does not address either the number of channels per jacket, image orientation, or image place- ment and location within a channel. These issues fall within the scope of AIIM Microform Formats Commit- tee, C3. 3
