44、 imperfections. It mainly applies to iron castings produced in sand moulds. It can, however, also be applied for other cast materials and other casting techniques. Specific examples are given in Table 3 In order to avoid any confusion, the types of imperfection are defined with explanations and illu

45、strations where necessary. NOTE This technical report does not contain any information regarding the causes of the imperfection and possible solutions to avoid the imperfection. For this, the publications as listed in the bibliography should be consulted. 2 Terms and definitions For the purpose of t

46、his document, the following terms and definitions apply. 2.1 imperfection discontinuity in the casting or a deviation from the intended geometry or material specification 2.2 discontinuity lack of continuity, or cohesion 2.3 defect unacceptable imperfection 3 Designation system The designation syste

47、m specified in this Technical Report is identical to the designation system for casting imper- fections as described in the publications listed in the bibliography 1 2 3 4. The designation system has four positions; a letter to designate the imperfection category (see Table 1) and a three-digit numb

48、er to designate the group (1 st , see Table 2), sub-group (2 nd ) and each particular imperfection (3 rd ).
