7、ly (or minus) when magnetic North is to the left, or West, of true North. 1.4 MAGNETIC MATERIALS 1.4.1 hard iron : A ferromagnetic material characterized by its ability to acquire permanent magnetism. 1.4.2 intermediate iron : A ferromagnetic material characterized by its ability to acquire sub-perm
8、anent magnetism and which may be classified, according to its magnetic behaviour, between hard iron and soft iron. 1.4.3 soft iron : A ferromagnetic material characterized by its ability to acquire transient magnetic properties when placed in a magnetic field, and to change its magnetic conditions w
9、ith change in the strength or the direction of the field, or both. NOTE - The magnetic properties induced in soft iron are not retained when the magnetic field is removed. 1.4.4 non-magnetic materials : Those materials which do not acquire magnetic properties, either transient or permanent, when pla
10、ced in a magnetic field or subjected to a magnetization process. 1.5 MAGNETIC CHARACTERISTICS RELATIVE TO THE SHIPS COMPASS POSITION 1.5.1 directive force (H) : The symbol commonly used to denote the horizontal component of the total magnetic force at the compass position, for any one direction of t
11、he ships head. 1.5.2 mean directive force : The mean value of the hori- zontal component of the total magnetic forces in the magnetic meridian at the compass position, obtained from any even number of equally spaced headings. It is equal to X H or to the mean of H cos 6 (deviation) for all direction
12、s of the ships head. 1.5.3 h (lambda1 : The symbol used to denote the ratio of the mean directive force to the horizontal component of the total magnetic force of the earth. 1.3.5 inclinaison : Angle dans le plan vertical entre la direction du champ magnetique terrestre et le plan hori- zontal.
