5、ing J2227 DEC2006 International Tests and Specifications for Automotive Engine Oils RATIONALE This SAE Information Report is intended as a reference guide to engine and laboratory tests used to characterize the peformance of service fill automotive engine oils outside of North America. FOREWORD Engi

6、ne and laboratory tests are utilized to determine the performance of engine oils. The API, ASTM, and SAE have established engine tests and classifications to describe engine oil performance. Such tests are included in SAE J183, Engine Oil Performance and Engine Service Classification (Other Than “En

7、ergy Conserving”), SAE J304, Engine Oil Tests, and SAE J300, Engine Oil Viscosity Classification. Additionally tests to characterize the energy-conserving characteristics of engine oils is described in SAE J1423. Engine and laboratory tests apart from those described in these SAE documents are also

8、established in Europe and Japan. The purpose of this document is to summarize the respective international tests and specifications utilized to characterize the performance of service fill automotive engine oils outside of North America. Since specifications are likely to change frequently, it is re

9、commended that all specifications be confirmed with the appropriate manufacturer or Technical Society at the time that critical usage is contemplated. 1. SCOPE This SAE Information Report lists engine and laboratory tests for service fill engine oils which are associated with specifications and clas

10、sifications established outside of North America. These specifications and classifications include those developed prior to January 1, 2010 by international technical societies as well as individual original equipment manufacturers. The information contained within this report applies to engine oils

EUROPEAN ACEA SEQUENCES Oil Sequences are established by the European Automobile Manufacturers Association (ACEA) to ensure that suitable lubricants are availabl

26、e to meet the minimum requirements of European vehicles. ACEA, which was formed in February 1991, is engaged in a broad range of activities including safety and environmental concerns and any regulations which have a direct impact on the European automobile industry. ACEA members are all the Europea

27、n motor vehicle manufacturers. The ACEA Oil Sequences define laboratory tests and engine tests which lubricants must satisfy to achieve the minimum performance requirements established by European manufacturers. These sequences are divided into categories for gasoline, light-duty diesel, engines wit

28、h aftertreatment devices, and heavy-duty diesel engines. The categories are divided further into sub-groups which more precisely define the performance for specific applications. The ACEA oil sequences undergo continuous improvement. Replacement tests and other changes required by the European autom

29、obile manufacturers are integrated and new issues are published on a regular basis. As new editions are published older editions have to be withdrawn. Validities of new and old editions are overlapping for limited periods of time as shown in the following table. “First allowable use” means that clai

30、ms cannot be made against the specification before the date indicated. “All new claims by” means that from this date onward all claims for new oil formulations must be according to the latest ACEA release. Until that date, new claims can also be made according to the previous ACEA release. (For exam

31、ple until 1st February 2008, oil marketers could make claims against the ACEA 2004 release even though the 2007 release was active. After 1st February 2008, any new oil claims must be according to the ACEA 2007 sequences.) “Withdrawn” means that no claims can be made against the issue after the date

32、 indicated. The ACEA 2008 European Oil Sequences for Service-fill Oils comprise 3 sets (classes) of sequences: one for Gasoline and Light-Duty Diesel engines; one specifically for Gasoline and Light-Duty Diesel engines with aftertreatment devices and one for Heavy-Duty Diesel engines. Within each of

33、 these sets there are categories which reflect different performance requirements - four (A1/B1, A3/B3, A3/B4 four (C1, C2, C3, C4) specifically for engines with after treatment devices, and four (E4, E6, E7, E9) for heavy-duty diesel engines. A/B: Gasoline and diesel engine oils 3.1 A1/B1 Stable, s

34、tay-in-grade oil intended for use at extended drain intervals in gasoline engines and car and light van diesel engines specifically designed to be capable of using low friction low viscosity oils with a high temperature/high shear rate viscosity of 2.6 mPa.s for xW/20 and 2.9 to 3.5 mPa.s for all ot

35、her viscosity grades. These oils are unsuitable for use in some engines. Consult owner manual or handbook if in doubt. 3.2 A3/B3 Stable, stay-in-grade oil intended for use in high performance gasoline and car + light van diesel engines and/or for extended drain intervals where specified by the engin

36、e manufacturer, and/or for year-round use of low viscosity oils, and/or for severe operating conditions as defined by the engine manufacturer. C: Catalyst Compatibility Oils 3.5 C1 Stable, stay-in-grade oil intended for use as catalyst compatible oil in vehicles with DPF and TWC in high performance car

39、and light van diesel and gasoline engines requiring low friction, low viscosity, low SAPS oil with a HTHS higher than 2.9 mPa.s. These oils will increase the DPF and TWC life and maintain the vehicles fuel economy. WARNING: These oils have the lowest SAPS limits and may be unsuitable for use in some

Consult owner manual or handbook if in doubt. 3.6 C2 Stable, stay-in-grade oil intended for use as catalyst compatible oil in vehicles with DPF and TWC in high performance car and light van diesel and gasoline engines designed to be capable of using low friction, low viscosity oils with a

41、HTHS higher than 2.9 mPa.s. These oils will increase the DPF and TWC life and maintain the vehicles fuel economy. WARNING: These oils may be unsuitable for use in some engines. Consult owners manual or handbook if in doubt. 3.7 C3 Stable, stay-in-grade oil intended for use as catalyst compatible oil

42、 in vehicles with DPF and TWC in high performance car and light van diesel and gasoline engines, with a minimum HTHS viscosity of 3.5 mPa.s These oils will increase the DPF and TWC life. WARNING: These oils are unsuitable for use in some engines. Consult owner manual or handbook if in doubt. 3.8 C4

43、Stable, stay-in-grade oil intended for use as catalyst compatible oils in vehicles with DPF and TWC in high performance car and light van diesel and gasoline engines requiring low SAPs oil with high HTHS higher than 3.5 mPa-s. These oils will increase the DPF and TWC life.Warning: these oils may be

44、unsuitable for use in some engines. Consult owners manual or handbook if in doubt. It isrecommended for highly rated diesel engines meeting Euro I, Euro II, Euro III, Euro IV and Euro V emission requirements and running under very severe conditions,

46、 e.g., significantly extended oil drain intervals according to the manufacturers recommendations. It is suitable for engines without particulate filters, and for some EGR engines and some engines fitted with SCR NOx reduction systems. However, recommendations may differ between engine manufacturers

47、so Driver Manuals and/or Dealers shall be consulted if in doubt. 3.10 E6 Stable, stay-in-grade oil providing excellent control of piston cleanliness, wear, soot handling, and lubricant stability. It isrecommended for highly rated diesel engines meeting Euro I, Euro II, Euro III, Euro IV and Euro V e

48、mission requirements and running under very severe conditions, e.g., significantly extended oil drains according to the manufacturers recommendations. It is suitable for EGR engines, with or without particulate filters, and for engines fitted with SCR Nox reduction systems. E6 quality is strongly re

49、commended for engines fitted with particulate filters and is designed for use in combination with low sulfur diesel fuel. However, recommendations may differ between engine manufacturers so Driver Manuals and/or Dealers shall be consulted if in doubt. 3.11 E7 Stable, stay-in-grade oil providing effective control with respect to piston cleanliness and bore polishing.
