12、es). The object of the IEC is to promote international co-operation on all questions concerning standardization in the electrical and electronic fields. To this end and in addition to other activities, the IEC publishes International Standards. Their preparation is entrusted to technical committees;

13、 any IEC National Committee interested in the subject dealt with may participate in this preparatory work. International, governmental and non-governmental organizations liaising with the IEC also participate in this preparation. The IEC collaborates closely with the International Organization for S

14、tandardization (ISO) in accordance with conditions determined by agreement between the two organizations. 2) The formal decisions or agreements of the IEC on technical matters express, as nearly as possible, an international consensus of opinion on the relevant subjects since each technical committe

24、l-process measurement and control equipment to be used for oxygen service, verifying this cleanliness and ensuring that the cleanliness of the equipment will be maintained up to the stage where the equipment is installed. This report does not apply to measurement and control equipment for welding, w

25、hich is covered by ISO5171. Oxygen service is defined as equipment or part thereof being in contact with oxygen-rich gas mixtures and other oxydizing gases (e.g.laughing gas). Greases, oils, thread lubricants, dirt, water, filings, paints, varnishes, scales, powder, etc., shall be removed because ma

26、ny of these materials, in particular oils and hydrocarbon greases, can react violently in the presence of oxygen and initiate fires or explosions. This report consequently covers the cleanliness procedures for the preparation, assembling, inspection, protection during transportation, storage and han

27、dling and installation of equipment, accessories or replacement parts intended for oxygen service. NOTEMany factors can influence the reaction in the presence of oxygen. Those may be: a higher oxygen pressure; a higher temperature; the fact that oxygen flows, or is only present as a static pressure

28、within equipment or part thereof. 2 Reference document ISO5171:1995, Pressure gauges used in welding, cutting and allied processes. 3 Procedures In preparing, cleaning and assembling any equipment, accessory or part for oxygen service, the following procedures shall be explicitly observed. 3.1 Order

29、s for equipment for oxygen service Each order shall specify that the equipment and/or accessories are to be cleaned, prepared, marked and packed for use in oxygen service. Any order for replacement parts issued separately from the orders for equipment and/or accessories shall also state clearly that

30、 the parts so ordered are to be cleaned, prepared, marked, and packed for use in oxygen service. 3.2 Cleaning Prior to cleaning, the materials used in the equipment, accessory or part, and their surface finish shall be checked in order to determine the appropriate manner of cleaning and the suitable

31、 cleaning agent. All foreign material such as mill scale, dirt, grit, solid objects and hydrocarbons shall be removed. Removal may be accomplished by grinding, wire brushing, blast cleaning, sweeping, vacuuming, swabbing, etc. All particles resulting from the grinding and wire brushing operations sh

32、all be thoroughly removed. 3.2.1 Mechanical cleaning This type of cleaning may be accomplished by blast cleaning, wire brushing or grinding. 3.2.1.1 Blast cleaning Blast cleaning may be described as the use of abrasives propelled through nozzles against the surface of pipe, fittings or cavities to r

33、emove mill scale, rust, varnish, paint or other foreign matter; when resorted to, blast cleaning forms part of the manufacturing process. The medium propelling the abrasive shall be oil-free unless the oil is to be removed by subsequent cleaning. Specific abrasive materials shall be suitable for per

34、forming the cleaning without depositing contaminants that cannot be removed by subsequent cleaning. Care shall be taken when blast cleaning so as to not remove an excessive amount of parent metal. The blasting medium and residue shall be removed to meet the cleanliness levels suggested herein for ox

35、ygen service equipment, accessory or part. 3.2.1.2 Wire brushing or grinding Accessible surfaces may be wire brushed. Welds may be ground and wire brushed to remove slag, grit or excess weld material. Carbon steel wire brushes shall not be used on aluminium or stainless steel surfaces. Any wire brus

36、hes previously used on carbon steel shall not be used on aluminium or stainless steel surfaces. 3.2.1.3 Tumbling Tumbling can be described as a cleaning method that uses a quantity of hard abrasive material placed in a cavity to clean the internal surfaces. The cavity and the abrasive are energized

37、so as to impart relative motion between the abrasive material and the cavity. This method can also be used to clean the outside surfaces of small components placed inside the container with or without the abrasive material. When resorted to, tumbling forms part of the manufacturing process.BSIEC6087

38、7:1999 2 BSI 03-2000 3.2.1.4 Swabbing, vacuuming Equipment, parts or piping may be vacuum cleaned after mechanical cleaning to remove loose particles or dirt and slag. If vacuum cleaning is not possible, the surfaces may be swabbed with a suitable solvent using a clean lint-free cloth to remove loos

39、e dirt, slag, etc. 3.2.1.5 Hot water and steam cleaning Hot water and steam cleaning may be used as a preliminary degreasing operation. However, this practice is not recommended as degreasing efficiency is low, and drying after cleaning is slow and difficult. 3.2.1.6 Blowing and drying After the equ

40、ipment, parts and piping have been mechanically cleaned and any abrasive material removed, the assembled piping should be blown with dry, dust and oil-free air or nitrogen to remove small particles. 3.2.2 Degreasing methods 3.2.2.1 Procedure selection The cleaning procedure selected, which includes

41、removal of the cleaning agent, will depend on several factors such as the following: a) the nature of the contaminants; b) the location and degree of contamination; c) the arrangement of passages with respect to their ability to be flushed and drained; d) the effectiveness of the cleaning agent in r

42、emoving the contaminants; e) the compatibility of the cleaning agent with the contaminants, metals and material involved; f) the availability and cost of cleaning agents and cleaning methods, the availability of personnel experienced in handling these materials; g) the speed and effectiveness of cle

43、aning and the desired level of cleanliness. A list of typical cleaning procedures would include: 1) solvent washing and vapour degreasing; 2) other cleaning methods such as: mechanical cleaning (blast cleaning, wire brushing, etc.); purging; acid cleaning; alkaline (caustic) washing. A detailed clea

44、ning procedure in accordance with the instructions of the cleaning agent manufacturer should be specified to the satisfaction of both the manufacturer and the user of the oxygen equipment and followed throughout the project. The appropriate cleaning and degreasing method shall be determined after du

45、e consideration of the limiting values. 3.2.2.2 Solvent washing Solvent washing may be described as the removal of organic contaminants from the surface to be cleaned by the use of suitable solvents or detergent solutions. To increase the efficiency, one may resort to ultrasonic cleaning which may b

46、e described as loosening of oil and grease or other contamination from a metal surface by the immersion of parts in asolvent or detergent solution in the presence of high-frequency vibrational energy. Sufficient ventilation shall be provided to ensure that any person involved in solvent washing shal

47、l not be exposed to solvent vapours above the national exposure limits for the particular solvent being used. 3.2.2.3 Solvents Some solvents which are permissible are given inTable 1. The characteristics shown, together with those given inTable 2, will allow the choice of a suitable solvent for a gi

48、ven application. Solvents shall be free from soluble hydrocarbon contaminants. NOTEVerification that solvents are contaminant-free is especially important where recycled or recovered solvents are used. Solvent suppliers shall provide users with a data sheet giving relevant safety information for the

49、 product being used. Users shall ensure that national exposure limits for the particular solvent being used are adhered to. 3.2.2.4 Washing equipment Washing equipment may consist of a recirculating system for the solvent or a closed container for immersing parts. Equipment used for washing shall be in accordance with the solvent manufacturers recommendations for the particular solvent being used.
