23、ional Standard on optical fibre amplifiers. The technology of optical fibre amplifiers is quite new and still emerging, hence amendments and new editions to this standard can be expected. Each abbreviation introduced is explained in the text at least the first time it appears. However, for an easier

24、 understanding of the whole text, a list of all abbreviations used is given in Annex A. 1 Scope and object This part of IEC 61290 applies to optical fibre amplifiers (OFAs) using active fibres, containing rare-earth dopants, presently commercially available. The object of this standard is to establi

25、sh uniform requirements for accurate and reliable measurements, by means of the optical demultiplexer test method, of the following OFA parameters, as defined in clause 3 of IEC 61291-1: a) pump leakage to output; b) pump leakage to input. NOTEAll numerical values followed by () are currently under

26、consideration. 2 Normative reference The following normative document contains provisions which, through reference in this text, constitute provisions of this part of IEC 61290. At the time of publication, the edition indicated was valid. All normative documents are subject to revision, and parties

27、to agreements based on this part of IEC 61290 are encouraged to investigate the possibility of applying the most recent edition of the normative document indicated below. 28、:Generic specification 1) . 3 Apparatus A scheme of the measurement set-up is given in Figure 1. The test equipment listed below, with the required characteristics, is needed: a) optical source: The optical source shall emit a light at the signal wavelength and, for optical demultiplexer calibration

29、, at the pump wavelength. A wavelength-tunable optical source covering both wavelength ranges, or two optical sources at fixed wavelength shall be used: fixed-wavelength optical source: This optical source shall generate a light with a wavelength and optical power specified in the relevant detail sp

30、ecification. Unless otherwise specified, the optical source shall emit a continuous wave with the full width at half maximum of the spectrum narrower than1nm(). A distributed feedback (DFB) laser, a distributed Bragg reflector (DBR) laser, an external cavity laser diode (ECL), and a light-emitting d

31、iode (LED) with a narrow-band filter are applicable, for example; wavelength-tunable optical source: This optical source shall be able to generate a wavelength-tunable light within the range specified in the relevant detail specification. Its optical power shall be specified in the relevant detail s

32、pecification. Unless otherwise specified, the optical source shall emit a continuous wave with the full width at half maximum of the spectrum narrower than1nm(). An ECL or an LED with a narrow bandpass optical filter is applicable, for example. The suppression ratio of side modes for the ECL shall b

33、e higher than 30 dB (); NOTEThe use of an LED should be limited to small-signal measurements. b) optical isolator: The polarization-dependent loss variation of the isolator shall be better than0,2 dB (). Optical isolation shall be better than 40 dB (). The reflectance from this device shall be small

34、er than 40 dB () at each port; c) variable optical attenuator: It shall be insensitive to polarization, and its attenuation range and stability shall be over 40 dB () and better than 0,1 dB (), respectively. The reflectance from this device shall be smaller than40 dB () at each port; d) optical demu

35、ltiplexer: The polarization dependence of the optical demultiplexer transmissivity shall be less than 0,1 dB (). Thisdevice shall have the following characteristics: the port A shall have a passband at the pump and the signal wavelength ranges, it shall be internally connected to ports B and C; 1) T

36、o be published.EN61290-6-1:1998 4 BSI 04-1999 the port B shall have a passband at the pump wavelength range, and with a loss higher than 20 dB () at the signal wavelength range (this ensures that also the amplified spontaneous emission is blocked by this port); the port C shall have a bandpass at th

37、e signal wavelength range and with a loss higher than 20 dB () at the pump wavelength range; the reflectance from port A shall be lower than 50 dB (); e) optical power meter: It shall have a measurement accuracy better than 0,2 dB, irrespective of the state of polarization, within the signal and the

38、 pump wavelength ranges of the OFA; f) optical fibre jumpers: The mode field diameter of the optical fibre jumpers used should be as close as possible to that of fibres used as input and output ports of the OFA. Their reflectance shall be smaller than 40 dB () at each port, and the length of each ju

39、mper shall be less than 2m. 4 Test sample The OFA shall operate at nominal operating conditions. Care shall be taken in maintaining the state of polarization of the input light during the measurement. Changes in the polarization state of the input light may result in input optical power changes beca

40、use of the slight polarization dependency expected from all the optical components used, these leading to measurement errors. 5 Procedure This method permits determination of both the pump leakage to output and to input through the measurement of the pump power exiting the OFA, measured after an opt

41、ical demultiplexer, and discriminated from the signal power by means of an optical demultiplexer, whose insertion loss shall be previously determined. The measurement procedures described below shall be followed: a) pump leakage to output 1) In order to evaluate the optical demultiplexer insertion l

42、oss, set the optical source, as shown in Figure 2, at the pump wavelength, as specified in the relevant detail specification. 2) Measure the optical power, P B , at the optical demultiplexer output port B, with an optical power meter as shown in Figure 2, having terminated port C. 3) Measure the opt

43、ical power, P A , at the optical demultiplexer input port A, as shown in Figure 2, but replacing the optical demultiplexer with the optical power meter. NOTEIf the optical demultiplexer insertion loss (L = P A P B ) strongly depends on the wavelength in the pump wavelength region, a certain measurem

44、ent error could be introduced, due to the possible different wavelength distributions of the optical source and the pump laser of the OFA under test. A possibility to reduce this error consists in using the pump laser of the OFA under test itself as optical source (provided that the residual pump po

45、wer level be sufficiently high). In this case, procedures 2) and 3) could be followed using a set-up similar to the one of Figure 2, but replacing the optical source with the OFA under test followed by a filter having a bandpass at the pump wavelength (e.g. another optical demultiplexer similar to t

46、he previous one). 4) Set the optical source at the test signal wavelength specified in the relevant detail specification, as shown in Figure 1a. 5) Set the optical source and the variable optical attenuator in a way to provide, at the input port of the OFA, the optical power P inspecified in the rel

47、evant detail specification, measuring the OFA input signal optical power, as shown in Figure 1a, but replacing the OFA under test with an optical power meter. 6) Measure the residual pump power at the OFA output, P p , with an optical power meter as shown in Figure 1a. b) pump leakage to input As in

48、 a), but replace procedures 4) to 6) with the following: 4) Set the optical source at the test signal wavelength specified in the relevant detail specification, as shown in Figure 1b. 5) Set the optical source and the variable optical attenuator in a way to provide, at the input port of the OFA, the
