BS 7983:2001 BSI 05-2001 1 1 Scope This British Standard specifies requirements for payphone apparatus: a) for connection to analogue PSTN

12、 lines (or equivalent interfaces provided behind a PABX); b) for connection to a cellular radio network; or c) that forms part of a public network (for example, public call boxes). This British Standard is also applicable to any discrete payphone facility provided by serially-connected apparatus tha

13、t supplies a connection by means of a socket conforming to BS 6312-2. This standard is intended for use by payphone manufacturers, suppliers and service providers. Requirements for network access or speech performance are outside the scope of this standard. This standard does also not apply to payph

14、ones for connection to the ISDN. 20、tions and abbreviations apply. 3.1 Definitions 3.1.1 operator notification tone tone transmitted to the network by a payphone when a call from a payphone to the operator is established, to identify that the calling apparatus is a payphone 3.1.2 payphone apparatus which, after the provision of paymen

23、e accessed by dialling, for example, 999 or 112 3.1.6 public switched telephone network nationwide public telephone network comprising interconnected telephone exchanges capable of switching telephone calls between telephones connected to the network 3.2 Abbreviations and units 4 Emergency access 4.

24、1 Emergency service access without charge Apparatus that can be used to make voice calls over a public switched network shall permit calls to the public emergency services without the need for payment to be proffered. Conformity shall be demonstrated by simulating a successful call to all emergency

25、service numbers without proffering payment. 4.2 Continuity of emergency service access After dialling the emergency services number and before termination of the call by the user, real-time two-way speech shall be supported. Any digits signalled to the network may disrupt transmission only while the

26、y are being signalled. Conformity shall be demonstrated by simulating a successful call to all emergency service numbers without proffering payment. 4.3 Emergency service access under power fail conditions Under power fail conditions, apparatus that can be used to make voice calls over a public swit

27、ched network shall provide the functions necessary to support calls to the emergency services and real-time two-way speech without the need to proffer payment. Conformity shall be demonstrated by disconnecting any external source of power and simulating a successful call to all emergency service num

28、bers without proffering payment. 29、und pressure level with respect to 1 Pa, expressed in decibels (dB)BS 7983:2001 BSI 05-2001 3 4.4 Barring of emergency service access The support of calls to the emergency services and of real-time two-way speech without the need to proffer payment shall not be impaired by any call-barring function

30、available to the user or owner. NOTE Functions are not considered to be available if their controls can be operated only after the release of software locks which require the use of detailed knowledge not available to the user or owner. Conformity shall be demonstrated by failure to bar calls to all

31、 emergency service numbers when using the normal barring procedure described in the telephone user instructions. 5 Dialling 5.1 Time dialling The apparatus shall provide a DTMF signalling facility. NOTE Addresses may be up to 26 digits, composed of four digits for supplementary service, four digits

32、for indirect access, three digits for international access and 15 digits for international numbers. Conformity shall be demonstrated by successfully signalling using DTMF. 5.2 Loop disconnect dialling (pulse/tone switching) Where the call is set up using loop disconnect dialling, the apparatus shall

33、 be configurable to enable switching to DTMF signalling following call set-up, after the receipt of an answer signal or the pressing of the pay on answer button (if applicable). Conformity shall be demonstrated by successfully signalling using DTMF during a call which was set up using loop disconnec

34、t dialling. 6 Keypad 6.1 Layout The layout of any telephone numeric keypad shall conform to ITU-T Recommendation E.161 and use the standard 3 4 (12 key) keypad array marked with the numbers 0 to 9, * and #. NOTE 1 The use of matt keypads with contrasting symbols would be of assistance to users with

35、impaired vision. NOTE 2 To assist disabled users, the pitch between the centres of keys should be at least 18 mm. NOTE 3 Any additional function keys should be readily distinguishable by their position or shape. 6.2 Tactile identifier The “5” key shall be provided with a tactile identifier. NOTE Typ

36、ically the tactile identifier consists of a raised “dot” nominally with a base diameter of 1.5 mm and a height of 0.5 mm, or a raised feature around the key. 6.3 Alphabetic marking Where the keypad is marked with alphabetic letters in addition to numbers, the relationship between the letters and the

37、 numbers shall meet the requirements of ETS 300 640.BS 7983:2001 4 BSI 05-2001 7 Message functions NOTE 1 Messages of various kinds are generally necessary in a payphone to give guidance and feedback to the user. These messages may be internally-generated in response to a number of possible stimuli,

38、 such as the condition of any internal logic or a signal derived from a key or other control device. Messages may also be generated in response to a message received from an IC card, a message from the network or a message from the payphone service provider received, for example, over a modem. Messa

39、ges may be presented to the user as an audible signal in the form of a tone or a spoken message, as a visual display in the form of a symbol or as an alphanumeric message, or even in a tactile manner in the form of Braille or other format for people with serious sight problems. NOTE 2 A display is o

40、f assistance to people with disabilities as it can permit, for example, a check that the correct number has been dialled. No function should be dependent on the use of the display. Further features for users with special needs are included in clause 9. NOTE 3 The display characters should be at leas

41、t 9 mm high and in a bold typeface. There should be a strong contrast between the characters and the background. The use of combinations of blue, green and violet should be avoided. 7.1 Provision of messages The provision of messages is optional. Where a message is provided, it shall be consistent w

42、ith its stimulus. Conformity shall be demonstrated by causing a message to be provided using the appropriate stimulus. NOTE 1 It is preferable that a set of basic messages should be provided, associated as necessary with specified signals received by the payphone from, for example, the network or an

43、 IC card. It should be possible to suppress the display of personal data. Typical messages may include, but are not restricted to: “Insert payment”; “Insert your card”; “Remove your card”; “Enter your number”; “Try again”; “Emergency calls only”. NOTE 2 It is recommended that at least two languages

44、are supported, one of which should be English. Guidance on language selection is given in BS EN 726-4. 7.2 Audio messages 7.2.1 Speech messages originated by the payphone shall be presented at the ear at a level of 5 dBPa 6 dBPa mean speech power while active, when the receive loudness rating is at

45、the nominal value. Conformity shall be demonstrated according to A.2. 7.2.2 Audible tones originated by the payphone shall be presented at the ear at a level of 14 dBPa 4 dBPa when the receive loudness rating is at the nominal value. Conformity shall be demonstrated according to A.3.BS 7983:2001 BSI

46、 05-2001 5 7.3 Payphone tones 7.3.1 The provision of an operator notification tone or payphone identification tone is optional but where either is provided, it shall conform to the requirements of Annex C. NOTE 1 Incorporation of an operator notification tone avoids operator-connected calls for whic

47、h no payment has been made. The incorporation of a payphone identification tone may enable PNO telephone operators to exclude transfer charge calls to such apparatus. NOTE 2 The frequencies and transmission levels specified in Annex C may be used in any combination and sequence for other purposes, p

48、rovided that the resultant cadence is significantly different from those specified in Annex C. Conformity shall be demonstrated according to A.4. 7.3.2 Where an operator notification tone is provided, it shall be applied either: a) for 10 s 1 s after the call has been answered; or b) for a period co

49、mmencing within 1 s of the payphone sending the last digit of the number giving access to the operator and shall persist for 25 s 1 s. Conformity shall be demonstrated according to A.5. 7.3.3 Where a payphone identification tone is provided, it shall be applied for a period commencing within 1 s of the call being answered and persist for at least 10 s 1 s.
