11、 Rubber Standards Policy Committee and supersedes BS6586-1:1985which is withdrawn. Although this standard continues to be primarily for quality assurance uses with guidance included for those involved in design work in Annex A, in this revision a designation system has been introduced whereby the ma

12、nufacturer declares the thermal conductivity in a coded form. This Part also contains guidelines (in Annex B and Annex C) on burning properties and fire hazards. These guidelines are in accordance with the principles recommended in BS6336. Attention is drawn to BS4840-1which specifies requirements f

13、or rigid polyurethane (PUR) foam produced in slab form for use in transport containers and insulated vehicle bodies. For the insulation of refrigerator cabinets, cold rooms and stores, attention is drawn to BS4840-2, BS2501and BS2502. WARNING. Adequate fire precautions should be taken when repairing

14、 any structure containing polyurethane or polyisocyanurate foams. Do not use welding or flame cutting equipment or any other appliances involving naked flames or involving hot air welders. This Part of BS6586is not applicable to the in situ insulation of fully constructed transport containers and insulated vehicle bodies. 2 Ref

20、s standard are listed on the inside back cover but reference should be made to the latest editions. 3 Designation The foam panels shall be designated according to their thermal conductivity. The designation shall comprise the following in the order presented: a) the number and date of the British St

21、andard, i.e. BS6586-1:1993; b) a double digit number to indicate the thermal conductivity selected in accordance with Table 1. Example The designation required for a foam panel with a thermal conductivity of0.020W/(mK) (see7.2) is as follows. BS 6586-1:1993/20 4 Composition and form The material sha

22、ll consist of rigid polyurethane (PUR) foam which shall have a uniform cellular structure. The foam shall be in the form of panels integrally bonded on their two major faces to sheets of metal or other material during manufacture. NOTENo requirement for odour is included as its assessment is largely

23、 subjective. However, it is recommended that the material should be supplied free from objectionable odour. Table 1 Designation codes for thermal conductivity 5 Preparation of test panels A separate panel shall be manufactured for the purpose of physical property assessment. It shall have minimum di

24、mensions of2.5 m 1.2m with the same thickness and facing materials as used for the container or insulated vehicle body. 6 Preparation of test specimens After manufacture the test panels shall be left intact, i.e. with the facing materials adhered to the foam, for a minimum of3days before preparation

25、 of test specimens. Since the foam may not be uniform across the panel, test specimens shall be selected from those areas which may provide the extremes in the range of test results, i.e. centrally and near to the edges and corners of the panel. Since at this stage in manufacture the edges of the pa

26、nel may not be protected, test specimens shall not be selected from within50mm of the edge of the panel. 28、ly from the thickness of the panel. Samples for the burning characteristics test given in BS4735:1974shall be taken from the central area only. NOTEA suitable selection plan is shown in Figure 1. 7 Physical properties 7.1 General The physical properties shall conform to the requirements given in Tab

29、le 2. 7.2 Thermal conductivity Thermal conductivity shall be determined by either method7Aor method7B of BS4370-2:1993at a mean temperature of10 C, (302days) after manufacture. Materials shall be conditioned throughout this period at (23 2) C and(50 5)%r.h. NOTEAdditional guidance is given in Annex

30、E on information concerning the thermal conductivity design values and on the values to be obtained3days after manufacture. 8 Marking The material, packaging, or invoice shall be clearly marked with at least the following information: a) the manufacturers name or trademark; b) sthe designation 1)as

31、specified in clause3. Table 2 Physical property requirements 1) Marking BS6586-1:1993on or in relation to a product represents a manufacturers declaration of conformity, i.e. a claim by or on behalf of the manufacturer that the product meets the requirements of the standard. The accuracy of the clai

32、m is solely the claimants responsibility. Such a declaration is not to be confused with third party certification of conformity, which may also be desirable. 37、e hazard of a material in use (see Annex B and Annex C).BS6586-1:1993 4 BSI 10-1999 Annex A (informative) Guidance for designers PUR foam of minimum overall apparent density of38kg/m 3is normally found to be suitable for the applications covered by this standard. The attention of designers is drawn

38、specifically to the following points. a) PUR foam produced by the press injection method is normally manufactured in situ within its final covering facing materials. Consequently the dimensions of the panel so formed will be those of the facing materials plus the thickness between the facings as req

39、uired. These dimensions and the allowed tolerances should be agreed between the purchaser and supplier. If required a sampling control procedure may be used on the principles embodied in BS6001. b) At densities above60kg/m 3 the thermal conductivity of PUR foam will increase slightly. c) PUR foam wh

40、ich is formed in panels and covered by air impermeable facings at the point of manufacture shows little or no increase in thermal conductivity with time. d) Moisture and water vapour barriers will be needed on the surface of the PUR foam, and joints should be made water and vapour tight. e) Corrosio

41、n is possible at the interface of PUR foam and metal surfaces in the presence of water vapour. f) It is necessary to minimize the presence of voids in the surface layers of the foam. g) Some adhesives may have a possible deleterious effect, including odour. h) Requirements for freight containers are

42、 specified in BS3951. i) The fire performance of the panels for transport containers and insulated vehicle bodies is largely determined by the facings applied to the foam and the design (see Annex B); where Fire Regulations apply these usually specify given ratings for standard fire tests on specime

43、ns of the completed structure and should be considered at an early stage. Annex B (informative) Burning characteristics of rigid polyurethane (PUR) foams and recommendations regarding their use Consideration of the fire performance of the finished structure incorporating rigid polyurethane (PUR) foa

44、m is relevant to the possible hazard associated with PUR foam. This should be assessed using BS6336 which gives recommendations on how fire hazard should be considered, taking into account the design of the end product and any possible risk to which it might be exposed in use. PUR foam is an organic

45、, and hence combustible, material. Care should be taken to avoid its ignition, particularly since the burning rate of the foams, if exposed in an enclosure, can be significantly greater than that of wood. The contribution to fire growth of PUR foam is controlled by the type of finish or facing used

46、in conjunction with the foam. It is generally accepted that insulation contained behind facings of high heat capacity does not have a significant effect on the initial rate of fire growth which is primarily affected by the fire performance of the exposed surface lining. The fire performance of the c

47、omplete structure is largely dependent on the fire properties of the facings and also reliant on the facings remaining in place and maintaining their mechanical integrity. In the design of the complete structure provision for independent fixings of facing and complete encapsulation of the foam shoul

48、d also be considered. Care should be taken during installation or repair of any structure or article which contains PUR foam to avoid it coming into contact with any possible ignition sources. Annex C (informative) Guidance intended to minimize fire hazards The following practices are recommended wh

49、erever PUR foam is manufactured, stored or fabricated. a) Maintain good housekeeping standards. b) Observe stringent fire precautions, and consult the Health and Safety Executive for advice especially in respect of welding operations. Prohibition of smoking except in designated areas is advised. c) Ensure that employees are fully aware of the potential fire hazards presented by these materials. d) Maintain fire drill procedures in consultation with the Fire Authority. e) Inform the Fire Authority of materials being used.BS6586-1:1993
