7、BS5551 has been prepared under the direction of the Chemicals Standards Committee. For some years the United Kingdom has participated in the standardization of methods for determining physical properties of fertilizers through Subcommittee3, Physical properties, of Technical Committee134, Fertilizer
8、s and soil conditioners, of the International Organization for Standardization (ISO). As international agreement is reached on the methods, it is proposed to publish them as Sections of BS5551. The standard is published in four Parts, each Part being subdivided into Sections and, where appropriate,
9、subsections. The four Parts are: Part 1: Terminology and labelling; Part 2: Sampling; Part 3: Physical properties; Part 4: Chemical analysis. This Section of Part3 is identical withISO5313:1986 “High nitrogen content, straight ammonium nitrate fertilizers Determination of oil retention”. Terminology
10、 and conventions. The text of the International Standard has been approved as suitable for publication as a British Standard without deviation. Some terminology and certain conventions are not identical with those used in British Standards; attention is drawn especially to the following. The comma h
11、as been used as a decimal marker. In British Standards it is current practice to use a full point on the baseline as the decimal marker. The symbol “ml” has been used to denote millilitre. In British Standards it is current practice to use the symbol “mL”. In British Standards it is current practice

Until it is available, guidance on sampling and sample preparation can be found in BS5309 “Methods for sampling chemical products”, Part 1 “Introduction and general principles”,
14、and BS5309-4 “Sampling of solids”. Additional information. This British Standard describes a method of test only and should not be used as a specification defining physical characteristics. 17、Introduction The porosity of a high nitrogen content, straight ammonium nitrate fertilizer can be measured by means of the determination of the gas oil retention, called by convention oil retention. The method specified in this International Standard is an empirical method, requiring the minimum of
18、apparatus, and gives results with an acceptable level of reproducibility. 1 Scope and field of application This International Standard specifies a method for the determination of the gas oil retention of solid, high nitrogen content, straight ammonium nitrate fertilizers. The method is applicable to
19、 fertilizers which do not contain materials soluble in gas oil and which are prilled or granular. 2 References ISO 3310-1, Test sieves Technical requirements and testing Part 1: Test sieves of metal wire cloth.
