8、ngineers and Hand Tools Standards Committee, and was first published in1962 under the title “Specification for ring spanners”. The1962 edition is withdrawn. In this revision the material and hardness requirements have been updated, and tables of dimensions are provided for metric series, unified ser
9、ies and BS/Whitworth series, all of which include a new provision for maximum offset depth. This revision takes account of a number of ISO standards as follows with one exception. In ISO1703 “Assembly tools for screw and nuts Nomenclature”, the BS term “ring wrench” is identified as “box wrench”. Th
10、is revision is related to ISO1085 “Assembly tools for screws and nuts Double-ended wrenches Size pairing”, ISO 3318 “Assembly tools for screws and nuts open-end double-head engineers wrenches, double-head box wrenches and combination wrenches Maximum width of heads”, ISO 691 “Wrench and socket openi
11、ngs Metric series Tolerances for general use”, and ISO1711 “Hand operated wrenches and sockets Technical specifications”. This will be indicated in the amendment table on the inside front cover.BS3555:1988 BSI 07-1999 1 1 Scope This British Standard specifies dimensional, testing and other requirements for ring wrenches for metric, unified and British Standard hexagon bolts, nuts and machine screw
14、s specified in BS916, BS1083, BS1768, BS1769, BS1981, BS3139, BS3692, BS4183, BS4190, BS4395, ISO272, and for hexagonal headed bolts of various materials in the aerospace series. It covers hexagon and bi-hexagon double-ended ring wrenches in the following range: metric wrenches 3.2mm to 60mm (across
15、 flats); unified wrenches ! in to 2 in (across flats); BS wrenches, ! in to 1) in (thread diameter) and Whitworth (large) wrenches, 3 / 16in to 1! in (thread diameter). Appendix A describes a test for resistance to torque andAppendix B gives guidance on the safe use of ring wrenches. Appendix C list
16、s information to be supplied by the purchaser when ordering ring wrenches. The principal requirements of this standard also apply to single-ended ring wrenches except that the overall length of single-ended ring wrenches are subject to agreement between the purchaser and the supplier. NOTEThe titles
17、 of the publications referred to in this standard are listed on the inside back cover. 2 Form and dimensions The form and dimensions shall be as shown inFigure 1 and as given inTable 1, Table 2 andTable 3. Wrench lengths shall be calculated using the following formula: 10 W + 50mm 10% where NOTEThe
18、length tolerances given in the tables are generally acceptable. However closer tolerances may be required for compact stowage. Where this requirement applies, tighter tolerances on length may be agreed between the purchaser and the supplier. 3 Material The wrench shall be manufactured from alloy ste
19、el. 4 Hardness The hardness of the wrench head shall be between either: a) 39 HRC and 46 HRC inclusive (determined in accordance with BS891); or b) 382 HV and 456 HV inclusive (determined in accordance with BS427). 5 Finish All sharp edges shall be removed and wrenches shall be free from cracks, bur
20、rs and any other defects which may adversely affect the performance of the wrench or may, during proper use of the wrench, give rise to the risk of injury to the operator. Any protective finish shall, where applicable, be in accordance with the appropriate British Standard. 6 Resistance to torque Wh
21、en tested as described in Appendix A, each wrench shall show no permanent deformation or other damage which could influence usability. 7 Marking The wrenches shall be marked plainly and indelibly on the shank adjacent to the head as follows. a) Wrenches for metric sizes shall be marked with the metr
22、ic nominal dimension across the jaw, expressed in millimetres, e.g.19mm. b) Wrenches for unified inch sizes shall be marked with the nominal across flats size of the hexagon, followed by the sign A/F, e.g.7/16 A/F. c) Wrenches for British Standard and Whitworth large hexagon sizes shall be marked wi
23、th two marks, both being fractions. The first fraction shall represent the nominal diameter of a bolt having a head the dimensions of which are specified in either BS1083 or BS916, followed by the sign BS. The second fraction shall represent the nominal diameter of a bolt having a head the dimension
