12、side front cover.BS3224-1:1988 BSI 08-1999 1 1 Scope This Part of BS3224 specifies the essential mechanical and electrical features excluding lamps and describes photometric tests for lighting units for use in precision approach path indicator systems at land aerodromes. Mounting devices are specifi

13、ed in a separate Part of BS3224. NOTEThe titles of the publications referred to in this standard are listed on the inside back cover. 2 Definitions For the purposes of this Part of BS3224, the following definitions apply. 2.1 PAPI unit a luminaire that produces a part of the signal for the precision

14、 approach path indicator (PAPI) system 2.2 mounting device the means of supporting a PAPI unit 2.3 principal vertical plane the plane of bilateral symmetry of the PAPI unit 2.4 transition plane the plane normal to the principal vertical plane in which the transition from red light to white light occ

15、urs 2.5 transition elevation angle the acute angle that the transition plane makes with the horizontal plane NOTEThe transition elevation angles for a system are determined by the approach slope required. 2.6 flashed area of an optical system in a given direction, the orthogonally projected area wit

16、hin which the luminance exceeds1% of the luminance of the brightest part when viewed at a distance of10m 2.7 optical component any item in the unit used either for producing the light signal or for controlling the signal by means of reflection, refraction, absorption or transmission 2.8 type test a

17、test for the purpose of checking compliance of the design of a given product with the requirements of the relevant specification. Type test samples are selected in agreement with the manufacturer or responsible vendor 3 General test requirements 3.1 The tests described in this standard shall be type

18、 tests (see2.8). 3.2 Except where otherwise specified, units shall be tested in an ambient temperature of between10 C and30 C. The units shall be tested as installed in normal use. The lamp type recommended by the manufacturer shall be used for the test. Tests shall be made on a single sample unit o

19、r, where a range of similar units is involved, on a single unit of each rated wattage in the range or on a representative selection from the range as agreed with the manufacturer. This selection shall include the unit, together with any attachments, which represents the most unfavourable combination

20、 from a testing point of view. Each sample unit shall pass all the relevant tests. Tests shall be carried out in the order given in Table 1. Table 1 Sequence of tests 4 Conditions of use The unit shall be designed for use on supply voltages not greater than50V r.m.s. to earth. NOTE 1The unit should

21、be suitable for use in a range of ambient temperatures from20 C to+ 50 C and relative humidities of up to90%. NOTE 2Due allowance should be made for the effects of solar heating, jet efflux, vibration, dust or sand, condensation, heavy rain, ice, snow, fuels, oils and de-icing agents. NOTE 3The unit

22、 should be designed so that if struck by an aircraft the minimum possible damage to the aircraft is caused. Means of lockable adjustment shall be provided to align the principal vertic

24、al plane to within 2 of arc of the vertical and the required transition elevation angle to within 1 of arc. Provision shall be made to verify the transition elevation angle when the unit has been installed. 5.2 Rigidity 5.2.1 Requirement. When tested in accordance with Table 1, clause3 and5.2.2 the

25、unit shall exhibit no deflection of its transition plane exceeding5 of arc and no permanent deflection of its transition plane exceeding1 of arc on completion of the test. 5.2.2 Test. Mount the unit under test in accordance with the manufacturers instructions to a rigid base with its transition plan

26、e set at600mm from the surface of the base and with its transition elevation angle set at the horizontal, or parallel to the surface of the base. Distribute a uniform load of70kg/m 2comprising dry sand over the entire top surface of the unit by allowing it to spill on to the unit, with means provide

27、d to prevent any overspill from the sides and/or bottom of the unit. Allow this load to remain in position for a period of15min. Note any deflection of the unit. Remove the load and then re-apply it as before and leave for a period of15min. Note any further deflection of the unit. Remove the load an

28、d examine the unit for any permanent deflection. 5.3 Wind loading capability 5.3.1 Requirement. When tested in accordance with Table 1, clause3 and5.3.2 the unit shall exhibit no permanent deflection of its transition plane in excess of1 of arc during any of the four periods of loading. 5.3.2 Test.

29、Mount the unit in accordance with the manufacturers instructions to a rigid base with its transition plane horizontal and600mm from the parallel surface of the base. Apply a uniform load horizontally to produce an equivalent force of3660N/m 2times the maximum orthogonally projected area in the verti

30、cal plane to the front, rear and sides of the unit for a period of2min for each face. After each period of loading examine the unit for any permanent deflection of the transition plane, and for compliance with5.3.1. 6 Optical components and lampholders Separate signal filters shall be used for each

31、lampway to minimize any possibility of a false signal in cases of filter damage. Lampholders shall be of such design that the lamp cannot be inserted incorrectly in the unit and that once inserted the lamp is retained firmly in position. The making of connections between lamp and holder shall not re

32、quire the use of a tool except when necessary for the prevention of finger-marking of the lamp envelope. NOTE 1All optical components should be easily replaceable and should be designed or marked so as to inhibit incorrect assembly. NOTE 2It should not be possible inadvertently to alter the alignmen

33、t of the optical components either during installation or maintenance. 7 Fastening of covers Covers that are required to be opened or removed for field maintenance purposes, e.g.lamp changing, shall be secured by fastenings that may be operated without the use of tools made specifically for the purp

34、ose. These fastenings shall be captive. Any gaskets shall be positively located either on the body of the fitting or on any removable covers. 8 Electrical connections 8.1 Provision shall be made to accommodate, for each lamp, the entry of an insulated and sheathed cable with an overall diameter of b

35、etween8mm and13mm. 8.2 Means shall be provided for the clamping of the cable so as to prevent any strain and twisting of the conductors connected to the terminations. 9 Resistance to heat 9.1 Requirements When tested in accordance with Table 1, clause3 and9.2, there shall be no deterioration or perm

36、anent deformation of the insulation materials or of any other part of the unit. The lamp temperatures during the test shall not exceed the designed temperature limits for the lamp type. 9.2 Test Operate the unit under test, using the recommended lamps of the recommended rated wattage, at an ambient

37、temperature of50 2 C for a period of100h. Measure the lamp temperature after a period of at least2h from the start of the test.BS3224-1:1988 BSI 08-1999 3 10 Resistance to ingress of dust and moisture The unit shall provide a minimum index of protection of IP24 when tested in accordance with Table 1

38、 and clause3 of this Part of BS3224 and section 9 of BS4533-101:1987. NOTEThe unit should be designed to minimize the direct impingement or splash-back of rain on to lenses or window surfaces. 11 Insulation 11.1 Requirement When tested in accordance with Table 1, clause3 and11.2, the insulation resi

39、stance of the unit shall be not less than0.1M7 at a voltage of500Vd.c. NOTECompliance will require the use of non-hygroscopic insulation materials capable of withstanding the operating conditions given in clause4. 11.2 Test Immediately after completion of the tests described in clauses9 and10, measu

40、re the insulation resistance with the lamps removed between the opposite poles of the lamp circuit and between each pole and the body of the unit at a voltage of500Vd.c. Where a lamp filament failure cut-out device is connected, make the measurement between both poles connected together and the body

41、 of the unit. 12 Photometric performance 12.1 Requirements 12.1.1 When tested in accordance with Table 1, clause3 and12.2 the unit shall comply with12.1.2 to12.1.5. 12.1.2 The unit shall project a single beam of light, the upper sector of which shall be signal white class A complying with BS1376 and

42、 the lower sector of which shall be signal red class A complying with BS1376. 12.1.3 With the lamps operating within the range of100% to1% intensity the unit shall emit red and white signal colours only. 12.1.4 At angles greater than0.5 from the transition plane, the colour of the red and of the whi

43、te signals shall not differ perceptibly from those at0.5 from the transition plane. 12.1.5 The unit shall appear at a distance of2km to exhibit the two distinct signal colours separated by an angular difference of not more than3 of arc. 12.1.6 At a distance of not less than30m from the unit, the lum

44、inous intensities, measured by a detector which shall not subtend an angle greater than5 of arc, shall be not less than those indicated in the isocandela diagram shown in Figure 1. NOTEThe colour media should not show any deformation or deterioration when the unit is operated for a minimum of2000h a

45、t the maximum light output. 12.2 Tests 12.2.1 General. Operate the unit as for service using the recommended lamps of the recommended rated wattage and correlate the results to the manufacturers published data for the lamp type. Make all measurements in accordance with the recognized methods for pho

46、tometric assessment. NOTEGuidance on making photometric measurements is given in Appendix A and BS5225-1. 12.2.2 Colour measurements. Make colour measurements of the signal first with the unit set at0.5 into the white sector and then with the unit set0.5 into the red sector, having a distance of not

47、 less than15m between the unit and the detector, and so that no part of the detector subtends a vertical angle greater than0.25 at the unit lens. Check for compliance with12.1.2 and12.1.4. 12.2.3 Assessment of transition. At a distance of2km, compare the light beam from the unit under test with a re

48、ference light beam from a unit of the same design set at an angle of at least0.5 into the red sector with all lampways lit. Make this comparison both by daylight at100% intensity when the background reflectance does not exceed25% and by darkness at1% intensity. Check for compliance with12.1.5. 13 Ex

49、ternal finish The external surface of the body or cover of the unit shall have a finish applied in accordance with the manufacturers instructions. NOTE 1The finish shall be of golden yellow, colour No.356 complying with BS381C. NOTE 2All parts of the unit should have a surface finish suitable to resist corrosion due to the effects of the conditions listed in clause4.BS3224-1:1988 4 BSI 08-1999 14 Marking The unit shall be durably and legibly marked with the following: a) the manufacturers name or identification mark; b) the type or ref
