The SkyScout is a hand-held viewing device thats capable of finding and identifying more than 6000 celestial objects visible to the naked eye, thus transforming the night sky into your own personal planetarium. Using GPS technology and a substantial celestial database, the camcorder-size

4、d SkyScout enables stargazers to point the device at any visible object in the sky, press a button and then listen to a commentary. For the truly celestially challenged, if you want to view a star or planet but havent a clue which bit of the heavens to look in, dont despair, the SkyScouts “locate” f

5、eature will guide you to it using illuminated arrows in the viewfinder. NOKIA N91 This amazing mobile jukebox is due out early in 2006. Nokias N91 looks set to be in a class of its own as a multimedia mobile phone, It will play music, take photos, surf the web and download videos, store contact deta

6、ils and generally organise your life. The robust little phone, resplendent in its stainless steel case, is the first Nokia to be equipped with a hard drive (4Gb), which means that it can store up to 3000 songs. The N91, which has a hi-fi quality headset and remote control, supports a wide range of d

7、igital music formats, including MP3, Real, WAV and WMA, It uses wireless technology to allow users to find and buy music from the operators music-store, You can also drag and drop music from your PC to the N91 and manage and share play-lists. If you can find the time. you can get on the blower, too.

8、 SEIKO SPECTRUM E-PAPBR WATCH The Seiko Spectrum is no ordinary wristwatch. At first glance, its an attractive and futuristic bracelet-style watch. Look closer, however, and youll notice that its display is unlike any youve seen before. Rather than the usual LCD screen, the display is made of “e-pap

9、er“-from the electronic paper pioneers E Ink Corp-and shows a constantly changing mosaic pattern along with the time. Because e-paper is so flexible and thin, it allows the display to curve round the wrist along with the watch band-something conventional liquid-crystal displays cannot do, as they ha

10、ve to be flat. Seiko says the e-paper display not only produces far better contrast than an LCD screen, but requires no power to retain an image, so the batteries last longer. Seiko is releasing only 500 of the watches next month, priced at about 1,250-so youd better lose no time. HIGH-DEFINITION TV

11、 HDTV, already available in the United States, Japan and Australia, will hit the UK in 2006. When you watch a programme filmed in the HD format, youll see a much sharper, clearer and more vibrant image. This is due partly to the way a programme is filmed, but also to the high-definition TV set itsel

12、f, which uses either 720 or 1080 visible rows of pixels (depending on which format the individual HDTV uses) to display images, compared to the 576 rows of pixels used in current sets. ELECTROLUX TRILOBITB 2.0 ROBOT VACUUM CLEANER Next time youre expecting visitors, dont bother to vacuum first-wait

The Electrolux Trilobite 2. 0 is a robotic vacuum cleaner that navigates its way around your floors using ultrasound, just like a bat. It pings out ultrasound vibrations at surfaces to create a map of the room, which it remembers fo

14、r future cleaning assignments. The Trilobite has no problem avoiding collision with things placed on the floor. Special magnetic strips are placed in doorways, near stairs and other openings. When Electrolux introduced the original Trilobite in 2001. it was voted among the 100 most-innovative designs (though whether the judges were dedicated couch-potatoes, and thus biased, we were not able to discover). The name comes from the hard-shelled sea creatur

16、e from the Paleozoic era (between 250 million and 560 million years ago) that roamed the ocean floor feeding on particles and small animals. HONDA ASIMO ROBOT Need an extra pair of hands around the office? Look no further; this month, the Honda Motor Company showcased its second-generation humanoid

17、robot. Asimo. The machine has come a long way since its first incarnation five years ago. The 1.3 metre-tall droid is now capable of performing a variety of office tasks, including reception duties, serving drinks and acting as an information guide, as well as making deliveries. Using multiple senso

18、rs, Asimo has the ability to recognise the surrounding environment and interact with people using integrated circuit tags. It can walk and run at a fair pace, and push a cart. Honda plans to start using Asimos receptionist functions at its Wako Building in Japan early in 2006, and its hoped it will

The wicker basket carries the balloons pilot, any other passengers, and the propa

This is controlled by a parachute valve cord that extends through the balloon, an

32、d into the basket. The use of hot air balloons can be traced back to the Three Kingdoms era of Chinese history (220-280 AD). Huge Lang used these early incarnations, known as Congaing lanterns, as military signals. The first manned flight on record took place in France on October 15th, 1783. In a ba

33、lloon constructed by Jacques-Etienne Mongolia, a Frenchman named Pitter de Rosier was elevated eighty feet off the ground. Modern hot air balloons, with their capacity to ascend or descend and occasionally steer at the pilots will, were first developed by Ed Yost in the 1950s. The Bristol Belle is g

34、enerally regarded as the first modern hot air balloon, and had its inaugural flight in 1967. Since then, balloon technology has become extremely sophisticated. Some hot air balloons have reached altitudes of 21,000 meters, traveled over 7,500 kilometers, and reached speeds of up to 400 kilometers pe

35、r hour. Hot-air balloonin8 is generally a safe activity, and serious accidents are rare. In the event that something does 8o wrong, several items of safety gear are useful to have on board. In case the pi to light and the auxiliary pies ignition fail, it is a good idea to have a welding torch flint

36、sparker available for the pilots use. Given the propane combustion used to propel the hot air balloon, a fire extinguisher is an absolute necessity. Flame-resistant gauntlets made out of either leather or name are required for the pilot so that a gas valve can be disabled even if an open flame is pr

While name is a specially-manufactured synthetic form of fire-retardant material, synthetic clothing is generally a hindrance to fire safety, and clothing made of natural fiber is a superior option for pilots. 38、nary measure that allows people on the ground to steer the balloon away from trouble. To ensure baton longevity and safety in operation, it is vital that hot air batowns be maintained and repaired while not in use. 39、rom forming on the fabric. This is especialy important if the balloon has landed in a wet or muddy environment. The burner and rue system also requires regular maintenance. This can involve the replacement or repair of damaged hoses and any sticking or leaky valves. The wicker basket has skids on it

40、s bottom to help it gain traction upon landing; over time these are worn down, and will need to be replaced. International regutations stipulate that balloons must be given a full inspection every one hundred flight hours, or twelve months. This ensures that any problems can be rectified before they
