20、hone Save your kids from the dark side of the Internet. A)Kids are always flocking to the latest gadgets. Whether it was Nintendo(任天堂，一款电脑游戏 )in the 80s or the iPhone 6 in 2014, each new generation seems to have a better grasp of technology. So how do you stay one step ahead of your kids and make su

21、re theyre not being exposed to inappropriate content? The answer: parental controls. Luckily, both Apple and Google are well-aware of the problem and have provided plenty of tools to protect your kids(and to make sure they dont rack up hundreds of dollars in in-app purchases). Here we explain how to

22、 set up those controls on both Android and iOS devices: Android Parental Controls B)Googles OS(Operating System)only has parental controls built in for tablets, but it does have decent controls for all devices in the Google Play Store. If you go into the stores settings, you will find a Parental Con

23、trols menu. Its off by default(系统默认 )and requires you to create a four-digit PIN when you turn it on. Once youve created a PIN, you will be able to decide which content ratings are acceptable for your kids, and the Play Store will only display content within those ratings. Unfortunately, you cant sh

24、ut off in-app purchases, but you can require a password for all purchases. To enable passwords for every purchase, tap on “ Require authentication(确认 )for purchases“ under the Play Stores settings menu. This will bring up a prompt asking you to select whether you want to require authentication for e

25、very purchase, every 30 minutes, or never. By default, it should be set for every purchase, but you should check to be sure. C)As for tablet parental controls, these center around an Android feature called “restricted profiles“. Unlike on iPads, Android tablets allow you to set up multiple user acco

26、unts, or profiles, similar to computers. To set up a restricted profile, go into the Android Settings app, tap on Users, tap “Add user or profile“ , and finally tap “Restricted profile“. From here, you can set content restrictions and even shut off access to specific apps. Just make sure that youve

27、also set up Play Store parental controls, as well as put a password on your personal user profile. The last thing you want is for your child to use your unrestricted account to access content they shouldnt be seeing. This is as far as Android goes when it comes to parental controls, but if you want

28、even tighter controls over your kids phones you can use powerful third-party apps thanks to the open nature of Android. iOS Parental Controls D)While Android probably takes the crown when it comes to managing storage space, Apples iOS has far better parental controls. It includes intensive controls

29、for pretty much everything, even the ability to delete an installed app. All of these controls are broken into two separate features of the OS: Restrictions and Family Sharing. E)Restrictions This feature is buried within the iOS Settings, but the amount of control it gives you is incredible. You ca

30、n do everything from shut off cellular data(蜂窝数据 )to block use of the built-in camera. To set up Restrictions, go to Settings General Restrictions. It will immediately ask you to create a four-digit PIN, after which you can define exactly what restrictions you want. Once youve set up a PIN, you can

31、shut off access to the iTunes and App Stores, prevent in-app purchases, set content ratings, block certain websites, and even prevent your kids from changing their phones privacy settings. You will probably find that a lot of the restrictions are unnecessary, but its certainly nice to have the optio

32、ns. You can never be too safe. F)Family Sharing Lets say youve set up Restrictions, but you still want to give your kids the ability to purchase apps. Instead of coming to you with their phones and asking you to enter your password for each purchase, you can set up Apple Family Sharing, a new featur

33、e introduced with iOS 8. G)While this feature has a number of different functions, the best is the way it handles purchases for your family. Apple notes that all purchases are made with the same credit card, but they can be separately operated by each member of the family, preventing your iPhone fro

34、m filling up with apps you didnt download, like your kids latest games. Perhaps the best part of Family Sharing is the “Ask to Buy“ feature. If you set this up on your kids devices, all of their purchase requests will be routed to your phone, presenting a notification where you can either allow or d

35、eny the purchase. And if you decide you want to download the app as well, you can access their purchases to download it yourself. Family Sharing also allows you to keep an eye on your kids locations via the Find My Friends app, as well as the locations of their devices with the Find My iPhone app. H

36、)To set up Family Sharing, go into the Settings app on your iPhone(not your kids)and tap iCloud. You will see a button that says “ Set up Family Sharing“ , which will walk you through the process. According to Apple, once you add family members via their Apple IDs, they will receive invitations to j

37、oin your family group. If your kids are under the age of 13, Apple now allows you to make Apple IDs for them, which you can do by going back into your iCloud settings, tapping Family, and then hitting “ Create an Apple ID for a child. “ Once youve set up Family Sharing, Apple explains how you can en

38、able Ask to Buy on your kids devices by going to Settings iCloud Family, then selecting a family member and tapping “Ask to Buy“. I)With all of these different features, you should be able to lock down your kids devices to uncrackable levels. They may be a bit frustrated by it all, but at least you

39、can keep them safe online and avoid costly bills from the App Store. 37 You can set up several user accounts or profiles on Android tablets as you do on computers. 38 Find My Friends and Find My iPhone are two apps for Family Sharing, which can help you to locate your kids and their phones. 39 Paren

40、tal controls can help parents to preset the content their kids have access to in in-app stores. 40 Once you set up the “Ask to Buy“ feature, any purchase your kids operate will be notified to your phone and confirmed by you. 41 With a PIN, parents will be able to ensure that the content ratings are

41、suitable for kids. 42 With Family Sharing, you can establish a family group by inviting family members in via their Apple IDs. 43 iOS Parental Controls have two different characteristics: Restrictions and Family Sharing. 44 Android is compatible to third-party apps, some of which can help to carry o

Baraniuk is currently hiring cognitive scientists and machine learning experts. Baraniuk wants to use the tactics(策略 )of Google, Netflix and Amazon to deliver a personali

47、zed experience. These Web services all rely on complex algorithms(算法 )to automatically adjust their offerings for customers. Just as Netflix recommends different movies based on your preferences and viewing history, a textbook might present materials at a different pace. The textbook which will be s

48、tored on a range of digital devices will automatically adjust itself thanks to machine learning. As a student learns about a topic, he or she could be interrupted by brief quizzes that evaluate whether he or she masters the area. Depending on how the student does, the subject could be reinforced wit

49、h more material. Or a teacher could be automatically e-mailed that the student is struggling with a certain concept and could use some one-on-one attention. This personalized learning experience is possible thanks to the wealth of data a digital textbook can track. This data can be used to better track students progress during a course.
