Horizontal augerboring (HAB) is one of these and is the focus of this manual of practice(MOP). The rst ASCE MOP for auger boring

28、 projects was developed in2004 bythe Auger Boring TaskForceofthe ASCE CommitteeonTrenchlessInstallation of Pipelines (TIPS). This MOP was the rst in a series of MOPsthat have promoted best practices and developed a knowledge base forauger boring projects. Since then, there have been advancements in

29、HABtechnology. Therefore, the Auger Boring Task Force established by TIPShas issued this updated and comprehensive edition.This MOP will assist engineers,contractors, and owners involvedin newpipe installation projects that use the HAB method to design and carry outprojects effectively and safely, i

30、n conformance with project requirementsand site conditions. The objective of this manual is to present a clearunderstanding of the method, its capabilities, and limitations; outlineimportant design and construction considerations; and identify potentialproblems along with prevention and mitigation m

31、easures. The task com-mittee understands that various trenchless technologies may be combinedto form hybrid trenchless methods. However, this MOP will focus on themechanics of the basic HAB means and methods with currently availableequipment. These guidelines are based on information compiled fromma

47、i ABBREVIATIONS, ACRONYMS, AND INITIALISMSCHAPTER 1GENERALThere is a signicant demand for underground infrastructure to trans-port our drinking water, wastewater, stormwater, natural gas, oil, andpower. Once every four years, the American Society of Civil Engineers(ASCE) provides a comprehensive ass

48、essment of the nations major infra-structure categories in the Report Card for Americas Infrastructure. Using asimple A to F school report card format, the Report Card provides acomprehensive assessment of current infrastructure conditions and needs,assigns grades, and makes recommendations for how

49、to raise the grades(ASCE 2013).According to the 2013 Report Card, the grade for drinking water,wastewater, and stormwater systems improved slightly from a D to aD from 2009 to 2013. Many of our drinking water, wastewater, andstormwater systems are nearing the end of their useful life. There are anestimated 240,000 water main breaks per year in the United States. If everypipe needed to be replaced, the cost over the coming decades could reachmore than $1 trillion. Capital investment needs for the nations wastewaterand stormwater systems alone are estimat
