The set consists of three flags with flagstaffs and flag case. 1.2 Classification.- The M-238 flag set consists of the following c omponen t s : Flag set, Signal M-238 (Tank) Component A

REQUIREMENTS 3.1 Standard shade sam+le.- Unless otherwise specified (see 6.21, the contract.ing officer will furnish the manufacturer a standard shade sample of r the olive drab cotton duck used for the case and a standard shade sample of the red, yellow and green cot

13、ton bunting used for the flags, The shade samples shall be used for matching color and colorfastness only. 3.2 First article.- Unless otherwise specified (see 6.21, before pro- duction is commenced a first article of a completely fabricated flag set or component as applicable, sha 1 be submitted or

14、made available to the con- tracting officer or his authorized representative for test as specified in 4.2. The approval of the first article authorizes the commencement of pro- duction but does not relieve the contractor from compliance with all provisions of this specification. The first article sh

15、all be manufactured by the contractor in the same facilities and in the same manner and form as will be used for the manufacture of the productio item. 3.3 Materials.- Materials shall conform to the referenced specifications and to the requirements Specified herein. 3.3.1 Cloth, cotton. bunting, mer

16、cerized.- Cloth for the flags shall be mercerized cotton bunting conforming to CCC-C:-439. 3.3.1.1 Color.- The bunting for the MC-273 flag (red) shall be dyed red to matc-h-Cable._No.-625)_)_. The bunting for the MC-274 flag (yellow) shall be - be dyed green to match Cable No. 70168: - “_ - “ dyed .

The bunting for.MC-275 flag (green) shall 3.3.2 Tie tape for flags.- The tie tapes of the flags shall be 1/2 inch wide conforming to type II, class 3 of DDD-T-86 and shall be dyed to match the colors of the flags to which they are to be sewn. 3 Provided by IHSNot

MIL-F-40045C -3.3.3 Cloth, cotton duck.- The cloth for the flag case shall be cotton duck conforming to type I, No. 10, hard texture of CCC-C-419, and shall be dyed olive drab Shade No. 7 to match the standard shade sa

19、mple furnished (see 3.1). 3.3.3.1 Treatment.- The cotton duck shall be treated in accordance with class B of CCC-D-950. 3.3.4 Tape for edqe binding.- The tape for binding the edges of the case s-hall be 3/4 inch in width and shall conform to type I, class 4 of MIL-T-43566. 20、 Shade No. 7 and shall match the standard shade sample (see3.1). . 3.3.5 Webbing.- The w3bbing for D ring chape and for the tie tapes of the flag case shall be 3/4 i-Ich in width and shall conform to type IIA, class 4 of MIL-W-530. The webbing shall be dyed olive drab Shade No. 7. 3.3.6 Thread, poly

21、este-l.- Thread shall conform to V-T-285. The types, classes and sizes shall be a; follows: For flag stitching - Type I or II, class 1, size B, subclass A for For case stitching .- Type I or II, class 1, size FF, subclass A for needle and bobbin needle and bobbin 3.3.6.1 Color.- Thread uied for flag

22、 stitching shall be dyed to match the color of the flag on which the thread is to be used. Thread for the case stitching shall be dyed to metch olive drab Shade S-l. 33.7 Wood.- Wood for the flagstaffs shall be selected straight grained wood of a species listed belcw. The wood shall be free from all

23、 defects other than medium surface checks, small knots and medium strain. When tested as specified in 4.4.1, the maxinum moisture content of the wood shall be 8 percent, Ash Birch Maple Beech Hickory- ._ Walnut -. - 3.3.8 Fastener, snap.-. 25、thout license from IHS-,-,-PlIL-F-9OOqSC 83 m 979970b 0390993 8 MIL-F-40045C 3.3.10 Sealer (wood preservative).- Sealer for the flagstaff shall con- form to type 1 or.11 of MIL-S-13518. 3.3.11 Varnish.- Varnish for the flagstaff shall be clear, gloss varnish conforming to TT-V-119. 3.4 Components.-

26、The flag set shall be composed of three signal flags, - one red (MC-2731, one yellow (MC-274) and one green (MC-275); three flagstaffs (MC-270) and one case (CS-90). 3.5 Construction.- Components of the signal flag set shall be constructed in accordance with the applicable drawings and the requireme

27、nts specified herein. 3.5.1 Stitching.- Stitching shall be in accordance with Std. No. 751. All stitching for the flags shall be type 301 with 10 to 12 stitches to the inch. All stitching for the case shall be type 301 with 6 to 8 stitches to the inch. Thread breaks in stitching shall be backstitche

28、d not less than one inch at each break. Stitching shall be backstitched not less than one inch at the ends, except where ends are turned under in a hem or held down by other stitching. Thread tension shall be maintained so that there will be no loose stitching and that the lock will be embedded in t

29、he center of the material sewn. There shall be no loose or untrimmed threads on the finished flags or flag case. 3.6 Details of components.- 3.6.1 Component A (flag case).- The flag case shall be fabricated from cotton duck specifiedin 3.3.3, and shall be in accordance with the details and dimension

30、s of drawing 5-1-322. The edges of the case shall be bound with tape specified in 3.3.4. The ends of the tape shall be overlapped 1-1/2 inches, plus or minus 1/4 inch and the overlap shall be backstitched one inch, plus or minus 1/4 inch. The case shall have a tie tape fabricated from webbing spec-

31、ified in 3.3.5. The end of the tie tape shall be bias cut to an angle of 45 degrees. The case shal.1 have a snap fastener specified in 3.3.8, located as shown. If a hole is punched befdre inserting the male or female part of the fastener, it shallbe smaller than the outside diameter of the fastener

32、tube so that the tube must be forced through the hole. The fasteners must be securely clinched without cutting the material. The male fastener on the body of the case shall be positioned on center 1-1/2 inches plus or minus 1/4 inch, from bound edge of opening, The female fastener on the cover of th

33、e case shall be positioned one inch, plus or minus 1/4 inch, from bound edge of cover. The case shall con- tain three pockets sufficiently large to allow the insertion of one flag rolled- on its staff in each pocket.“ When the flag case is procured separately, three dowels 1-1/2 inches in diameteran

35、be fabricated from wood specified in 3.3.7, and shall conform to the details and dimensions shown on drawing 5-1-322. The flagstaff shall be sanded to a smooth surface and shall be given one coat of sealer specified in 3.3.10 and one coat of varnish specified in 3.3.11. 3.6.3 Components C, D and E (

36、flag MC-273, MC-274 and MC-2751.- The flags shall be fabricated from mercerized cotton bunting specified in 3.3.1, and shall conform to the details and dimensions shown on drawing 5-1-304. 3.7 Marking.- In addition to any special marking required by the contract or purchase order (see 6.21, marking

37、shall be as specified in 3.7.1 and 3.7.2. 3.7.1 Components A, C, D and E (flags and flaQ case).- The flags and flag case shall be marked as indicated on the applicable drawing. The id- entification markings shall conform to the markings of type IV, class 9 labels in DDD-L-20. The fastness of the mar

38、kings shall be as specified for type IV, class 5 labels of DDD-L-20. 3.7.2 Component B (flagstaff 1.- The flagstaff shall be marked as shown on drawing 5-1-322. 3.8 Assembly.- When the set is procured as a unit, the set shall be assembled as follows: The flagstaffs shall be inserted into the tunnel

39、of the flag heading as far as possible. One end of the tie tape of the flag shall then be passed through the drilled hole on the flagstaff while the other end is passed around the flagstaff. The ends of the tape shall then be tied together using a bow knot. After the assembly of the flags and flagst

40、affs has been completed, the flags shall be wound around their staffs and inserted in the applicable pockets of the flag case. The case shall then be closed by use of the snap fastener. - - . . . . - . . 3.9 Wrkmanship.- The flag set and the components of the flag set covered by this specificaticm s

41、hall be clean, well made and shall meet the acceptable quality levels established by this specification. 4. QUALITY ASSURANCE PROVISIONS 4.1 Inspection responsibility.- Unless otherwise specified in the con- tract or purchase order, the supplier is responsible for the performance of all inspection r

42、equirements as specified herein. 44、ces conform to the prescribed requirements. 4.2 First article inspection.- When a first article is required, in- spection and testing of the first article shall be made on a completely finished flag set or component aS applicble, for all provisions of this specification applicable to end item examin

45、ation and tests. 4.3 Sampling for inspection and acceptance.- Sampling for inspection and acceptance shall be in accordance with MIL-STD-105. 4.3.1 Inspection of materials.- 4.3.1.1 Testing of materials.- In addition to the quality assurance provisions of the subsidiary specifications and drawings,

46、inspection shall be performed on the material listed in table I. The inspection level shall be performed on the mateial listed in table I.
