7、1.1 This Outline describes tests for determining whether wire-pulling compounds corrode metal racewaysand whether they are compatible with the insulation and jacketing materials typically used in electricalwires and cables intended to be pulled into conduit and other raceways. These compounds are fo
8、rlubricating the wiring while it is being pulled in. In Sections 12 19, this Outline also describes analyticalmethods for characterizing a compound to provide a basis for identification and for comparison withproduction lots to reveal compositional changes.1.2 This Outline does not investigate other
9、 properties of wire-pulling compounds, such as solubility,flammability, and toxicity.SAMPLES2 Compound2.1 Approximately 2 gallons of the wire-pulling compound are needed for use in this test program. At leastone of the containers is to be a 1 quart size.3 Wire3.1 All four of the wires described in T
10、able 3.1 are to be used in this test program as representative ofthe insulated wires that are commonly pulled into conduit and other raceways. 12、s are to be used in this testprogram as representative of the conduit and raceways into which insulated wires commonly are pulled.The EMT is to be zinc-coated on the inside surface.PERFORMANCE TESTS5 Introduction5.1 The performance tests described in 6.1 11.1 are to be conducted on samples of the wi
13、re-pullingcompound to evaluate compatibility of the compound with the conductor insulation and jackets that arecommonly used on wires and cables in conduit and other raceways.6 Total Immersion of Wires6.1 U-shaped specimens of each of the four wires specified in Table 3.1 are to be totally immersed
14、in thewire-pulling compound for 30 days at a room temperature of 25 10C (77 18F). The ends of each wirespecimen are to extend above the surface of the wire-pulling compound. Upon removal, the wirespecimens are to be wiped clean with a cloth and examined for changes in appearance. The wirespecimens a
15、re to be allowed to dry for 96 hours at a room temperature of 25 10C (77 18F) beforebeing tested for tensile strength and elongation as described in 9.1 and 9.2.7 Extended Exposure of Wires in Conduit7.1 Ten-foot lengths of each of the four wire types specified in Table 3.1 are to be pulled into ind
16、ividual10-ft lengths of 1/2-inch EMT using the wire-pulling compound as a lubricant in accordance with themanufacturers instructions. In addition, 10-ft lengths of each wire are to be pulled into 10-ft lengths of the1/2-inch EMT without using the wire-pulling compound or any other lubricant. Each of
17、 the EMT-and-wireassemblies is to be sealed at each end with a cork. The assemblies are to be stored in a horizontalposition at a temperature of 50.0 2.0C (122.0 3.6F). After 75 days, each cork is to be replaced withthe smallest plug of glass wool that will cover the opening. Protective gloves and a
18、 dust mask are to beworn while handling the glass wool. After an additional 105 days (180 days total exposure), the wiresamples are to be removed from the EMT and allowed to dry for 96 hours at a room temperature of 2510C (77 18F) before being tested as described in 8.1 9.2. See 11.1 regarding addit

20、 to be conducted on each of the four wires specified in Table 3.1 inuntested (as-received) 4-ft lengths and in 4-ft lengths from the wires subjected to the exposure-in-conduittest described in 7.1. Wire pulling compound from the exposure-in-conduit test is to be removed from bareconductor ends by me
21、ans of a soft cloth before testing. See 11.1 for optional additional testing.8.2 The apparatus is to consist of a tank in which the wires are to be immersed in tap water, anearth-grounded electrode, a means such as a circuit breaker or lamp bank for indicating the flow ofbreakdown current in the tes
22、t circuit, and a transformer complying with the following. The test potential isto be supplied by a 48 62 Hz isolation transformer whose output potential is continuously variable fromnear zero to 50,000 V rms at a rate not exceeding 500 V/s. With a specimen in the circuit, the outputpotential is to
23、have a crest factor (peak voltage divided by rms voltage) equal to 95 105 percent of thecrest factor of a pure sine wave over the upper half of the output range. The output potential is to bemonitored continuously by a voltmeter. If of the analog rather than digital type, the voltmeter is to have ar
24、esponse time that does not introduce a lagging error greater than 1 percent of full scale at the specifiedrate of increase in voltage. The voltmeter is to have an overall accuracy that does not introduce an errorexceeding 5 percent. The water is to be at a room temperature of 25 10C (77 18F), with n
