3、BESTOS This specification is approved for use by the Naval Sea Systems Command, Department of the Navy, and is available for use by all Departments and Agencies of the Department of Defense. 1. SCOPE 1.1 Scope. This specification establishes the requirements of non-asbestos sheet gasket material for

4、 non-propulsion and propulsion steam and water applications and for all petroleum based hydraulic and lube oil applications. 1.2 Classification. 1.2.1 Types. Type I Gaskets exposed to saturated steam service up to 366 F and 150 pounds per square inch gauge (psig) Type II Gaskets not exposed to steam

5、 for (1) water service applications up to 300 F and 1800 psig, (2) lube oil service up to 250 F and 150 psig, and (3) hydraulic oil service up to 180 F and 600 psig 1.3 Part or identifying number (PIN). PINs to be used for non-asbestos sheet gasket material acquired to this specification are created

18、nce. In the event of a conflict between the text of this document and the references cited herein, the text of this document takes precedence. Nothing in this document, however, supersedes applicable laws and regulations unless a specific exemption has been obtained. 3. REQUIREMENTS 3.1 Qualificatio

19、n. Gaskets furnished under this specification shall be products which are authorized by the qualifying activity for listing on the applicable qualified products list before contract award (see 4.2 and 6.3). 3.2 Material. 3.2.1 Composition. The material shall not contain any asbestos. The material sh

20、all be according to the contractors design and as specified in 3.2.1.1 and 3.2.1.2. 3.2.1.1 Type I composition. The sheet gasket material shall be of a graphite laminate type with a corrosion-resistant metal core. 3.2.1.2 Type II composition. The sheet gasket material shall be composed of various or

21、ganic or inorganic materials and binders. 3.2.2 Recycled, recovered, or environmentally preferable materials. Recycled, recovered, or environmentally preferable materials should be used to the maximum extent possible, provided that the material meets or exceeds the operational and maintenance requir

22、ements, and promotes economically advantageous life cycle costs. 3.2.3 Material safety data sheet (MSDS). The MSDS shall be provided in accordance with the requirements of FED-STD-313. The MSDS shall be included with each shipment of the material covered by this specification (see 6.4). 3.2.4 Toxic

23、products. The material shall have no adverse effect on the health of personnel when used for its intended purpose. Conformance shall be determined by a health hazard risk assessment (HHRA) as specified in 4.1.2. Products meeting this requirement will be issued a letter of approval by the Naval Sea S

24、ystems Command. Letters of approval shall apply solely to those products specifically evaluated for toxicity. Formulation changes in the product shall require a re-evaluation of the product for toxicity and a new letter of approval. Manufacturers shall provide a copy of the approval letter applicabl

25、e to offered products to the contracting activity before the product will be accepted as specified (see 6.2). Questions pertaining to health hazards shall be referred by the contracting activity to Chief, Bureau of Medicine and Surgery, Department of the Navy, who will act as an advisor to the contr

26、acting agency. 3.3 Dimensions and tolerances. The dimensions and tolerances of sheet gasket material shall be in accordance with table I and table II as specified (see 4.4.1.1, 4.4.1.2, and 6.2). Using a thickness of 0.0625 inch, tensile strength shall be a minimum of 3500 psig in the weakest axis (see 4.4.2). 3.4.2 Type II. Using a thickness of 0.0625 inch, tensile st

34、rength shall be a minimum of 1700 psig in the weakest axis (see 4.4.2). 3.5 Sealability (Type II only). The gasket shall have a leak rate not greater than 1 milliliter (mL) per hour (0.034 ounces per hour) (see 4.4.4). 3.6 Compressibility and recovery (Type II only). Compressibility shall be within

35、the range of 7 to 17 percent. Recovery shall be not less than 40 percent (see 4.4.5). Creep relaxation shall be not greater than 60 percent (see

36、 4.4.6). 3.8 Adhesion (Type II only). Adhesion shall be not greater than step 3 of the scale specified in A.6.1(g) of Appendix A (see 4.4.7). 3.9 Flexibility (Type II only). The material shall not crack or delaminate when bent around a mandrel with a diameter 12 times the nominal thickness of the ga

37、sket material (see 4.4.8). 3.10 Compressive strength. 3.10.1 Type I. Compression resistance shall be 4350 psi or higher when tested at a temperature of 750 F (see 4.4.9). 3.10.2 Type II. Compressive strength shall be such that the area change is not greater than 20 percent (see 4.4.9). 3.11 Detrimen

38、tal materials. Detrimental materials shall not exceed the maximum concentrations as specified in table III (see 4.4.3). TABLE III. Detrimental materials. 40、 handling, packaging, and packing, the gasket material shall not come in contact with mercury or mercury compounds. 3.12 Performance. 3.12.1 Type I performance tests (steam exposure). 3.12.1.1 Steam exposure using raised-face flanges. The gasket material shall provide a seal on two standard piping f

41、lange assemblies for 300 hours at 150 psig and maintained at a temperature of 366 F (see 4.4.10.1.1). 3.12.1.2 Steam exposure using flat-faced flanges. The gasket material shall provide a seal on one standard piping flange assembly for 100 hours at 150 psig maintained at a temperature of 366 F (see

42、4.4.10.1.2). 3.12.1.3 Steam exposure with dynamic pulse using flat-faced flanges. The gasket material shall be submitted to the following series of conditions: (1) elevated temperature exposure, (2) static elevated pressure, and (3) dynamic pulse pressure (see 4.4.10.1.3). Failure is defined as gask

43、et blow-out or loss of 100 mL per hour (3.4 ounces per hour) or more of fluid from the flange assembly. 3.12.2 Type II performance tests. 3.12.2.1 Water exposure. 44、face flange. The gasket material shall provide a seal on two standard piping flange assemblies for 300 hours at 400 psig and be maintained at a temperature of 300 F during thermal cycles. Water system pressure shall be not less than 400 psig after each 100-hour cycle and at normal system pressure ch

45、ecks (see 4.4.10.2.1). 3.12.2.1.2 Flat-faced flange. The gasket material shall provide a seal for 100 hours at 315 psig minimum and be maintained at ambient temperature (see 4.4.10.2.2). 3.12.2.1.3 High-pressure exposure with raised-face flange. 3.12.2.1.3.1 Sealability. The gasket material shall pr

46、ovide a seal on two standard piping flange assemblies for 100 hours at 1800 psig and be maintained at a temperature of 300 F during thermal cycles. A minimum cool down time between cycles is 8 hours (see 4.4.10.2.3.1). 3.12.2.1.3.2 Blow-out test. Gasket materials shall be tested according to the blo

47、w-out test in Appendix J, at 450 F and shall maintain integrity to a limit of 4500 psig (see 4.4.10.2.3.2). 3.12.2.2 Lube oil exposure. 3.12.2.2.1 Raised-face flange. The gasket material shall provide a seal on a l-inch standard piping flange assembly for 500 hours at 150 psig and shall be maintaine

48、d at a temperature of 250 F during thermal cycles (see 4.4.10.3.1). 3.12.2.2.2 Flat-faced flange. The gasket material shall provide a seal on a 3-inch standard piping flange assembly for 500 hours at 150 psig and shall be maintained at a temperature of 250 F during thermal cycles (see 4.4.10.3.2). 3

49、.12.2.3 Hydraulic oil exposure . 3.12.2.3.1 Raised-face flange. The gasket shall provide a seal on a raised-face flange for 500 hours at 600 psig and shall be maintained at a temperature of 180 F during thermal cycles (see 4.4.10.4.1). 3.12.2.3.2 Flat-faced flange. The gasket shall provide a seal on a flat-faced flange for 500 hours at 600 psig and
