3、BESTOS This specification is approved for use by the Naval Sea Systems Command, Department of the Navy, and is available for use by all Departments and Agencies of the Department of Defense. 1. SCOPE 1.1 Scope. This specification establishes the requirements of non-asbestos sheet gasket material for
4、 non-propulsion and propulsion steam and water applications and for all petroleum based hydraulic and lube oil applications. 1.2 Classification. 1.2.1 Types. Type I Gaskets exposed to saturated steam service up to 366 F and 150 pounds per square inch gauge (psig) Type II Gaskets not exposed to steam
5、 for (1) water service applications up to 300 F and 1800 psig, (2) lube oil service up to 250 F and 150 psig, and (3) hydraulic oil service up to 180 F and 600 psig 1.3 Part or identifying number (PIN). PINs to be used for non-asbestos sheet gasket material acquired to this specification are created

18、nce. In the event of a conflict between the text of this document and the references cited herein, the text of this document takes precedence. Nothing in this document, however, supersedes applicable laws and regulations unless a specific exemption has been obtained. 3. REQUIREMENTS 3.1 Qualificatio
19、n. Gaskets furnished under this specification shall be products which are authorized by the qualifying activity for listing on the applicable qualified products list before contract award (see 4.2 and 6.3). 3.2 Material. 3.2.1 Composition. The material shall not contain any asbestos. The material sh
20、all be according to the contractors design and as specified in 3.2.1.1 and 3.2.1.2. 3.2.1.1 Type I composition. The sheet gasket material shall be of a graphite laminate type with a corrosion-resistant metal core. 3.2.1.2 Type II composition. The sheet gasket material shall be composed of various or
21、ganic or inorganic materials and binders. 3.2.2 Recycled, recovered, or environmentally preferable materials. Recycled, recovered, or environmentally preferable materials should be used to the maximum extent possible, provided that the material meets or exceeds the operational and maintenance requir
22、ements, and promotes economically advantageous life cycle costs. 3.2.3 Material safety data sheet (MSDS). The MSDS shall be provided in accordance with the requirements of FED-STD-313. The MSDS shall be included with each shipment of the material covered by this specification (see 6.4). 3.2.4 Toxic
23、products. The material shall have no adverse effect on the health of personnel when used for its intended purpose. Conformance shall be determined by a health hazard risk assessment (HHRA) as specified in 4.1.2. Products meeting this requirement will be issued a letter of approval by the Naval Sea S
24、ystems Command. Letters of approval shall apply solely to those products specifically evaluated for toxicity. Formulation changes in the product shall require a re-evaluation of the product for toxicity and a new letter of approval. Manufacturers shall provide a copy of the approval letter applicabl
