October 1969 MILITARY SPECIFICATION CARTRIDGE ACTUATED DEVICES/PROPELLANT ACTUATED DEVICES GENERAL DESIGN SPECIFICATION FOR This specification is mandatory for use by all Departments and Agencies of the Department of Defense. 1. SCOPE 1.1 This specification covers the general require
2、ments for design and establishes uniform methods for testing cartridge actuated devices (CAD)/ propellant actuated devices (PAD) such as crew escape devices, webbing cutters, cable cutters, guillotines, explosive bolts, and thrust reversers used in aircraft and weapons systems. The purpose of the te
3、sting program is to de- termine performance, safety, soundness of mechanical design, and resistance to environments encountered during storage, handling, and service use. 2. APPLICABLE DOCUMENTS 2.1 The following-documents, of the issue in effect on date of invita- tion for bids or request for propo

REQUIREMENTS 3.1 Engineerinn design tests.- This specification makes provisions for engineering design testing. 3.2 Selection of specifications and standards.- Specifications and standards for necessary commodities and services not specified herein shall be selected in accordance with MIL-STD-143.
14、 3.3 Materials.- Materials for the CADIPAD, propellant, explosive, delay composition, pyrotechnics, propellant gas, and buffing fluid (if used) shall be compatible and shall withstand environmentax, electromagnetic, functional, service, and storage conditions to which the devices will be exposed. Py
15、ro- cellulose materials shall not be included as wads, spacers, or closure discs. Acceptance or approval of materials for design or during the course of manu- facture shall in no case be construed as a guarantee of acceptance of the finished device. 3.3.1 Metals.- Exposed metals shall be of the corr
16、osion-resisting type or suitablytreated to resist the corrosive effect of fuels, salt spray, or atmospheric conditions to which the devices may be subjected in storage or normal service. The use of magnesium shall. be subject to the approval of the cognizant design agency for the specific applicatio
17、n involved. 3.3.1.1 Dissimilar metalsr- Dissimilar metals shall not be used in intimate contact with each other unless suitably protected against electro- lytic corrosion. Dissimilar metals are defined in MS33586. 3.3.1.2 Aluminum-alloy parts .- Unless otherwise specified all aluminum- alloy parts s

19、all be subject to the approval of the cognizant design agency for the specific application involved. 3.3.4 Restriction on finishes and paints.- No finishes or paints, other than those mecified herein or otherwise authorized by the cognizant design agency, shail be applied to the CAD/PAD either exter
20、nally or internally. 3.4 Design and construction.- The CAD/PADs hall be of the simplest and most efficient design consistent with the proposed use. Specific con- sideration shall be given to the factors of minimum size and weight while adhering to functional requirements, reliability, and safety of
21、operation. Cartridges used in CAD shall conform to MIL-C-83125. 3.4.1 Performance reliability.- The devices must meet all performance requirements at a reliability of not less than 99.9 percent at a confidence level of 90 percent over the temperature range of -65 to +200“F. 3.4.2. Service life.- The
22、 devices shall have a shelf life plus installed l%fe of not less than 5 years from date of manufacture and shall hsve an installed life of not less than 3 years. 3.4.3 Disassembly and reassemb1X.- The devices shall be designed in such a manner that they can be disassembled for inspection or installa
23、tion of the cartridge and reassembled. Disassembly and reassembly of the devices shall be accomplished by the use of standard tools. 3.4.4 Structural strength.- The devices shall be designed with .a minimum safety factor of 1.5 based on yield strength. 3.4.5 Bosses.- Bosses shall be designed to prev
24、ent damage to the internal mechanism and shall not restrict the flow of fluid when universal fittings are used. 3.4.6 Torque requirements of threaded joints.- The torque requirements of subassemblies of the devices which contain provisions for the attachment of pressure transmission hose to tube.ass
