2、r use by all Departments and Agencies of the Department of Defense. 1. SCOPE 1.1 Scope. This specification covers nonmetallic abrasive materials used in the blast cleaning of metal surfaces and glass reinforced plastic surfaces, such as ships hulls and tanks, for removing rust, scale, old paint and
3、marine growth and to provide surfaces that are clean and suitable for painting. Abrasive inorganic materials are, for example, minerals and slags. Inorganic abrasives are used to remove coatings to bare metal. Inorganic abrasives have set limits for toxic metal content and radioactivity and meet Env
4、ironmental Protection Agency hazardous waste requirements. In addition, Navy worker health and safety requirements and Navy corrosion control requirements have also been addressed. 2. In the event of a conflict between the text of this specification and the references cited herein (except for associated detail specifications, specification sheets or MS standards
21、), the text of this specification shall take precedence. Nothin in this specification, however, shall supersede applicable laws and regulations un f ess a specific exemption has been obtained. 3. REQUIREMENTS 3.1 Qualification. The abrasive materials furnished under this specification shall be produ
22、cts which are authorized by the qualifying activity for listing on the applicable qualified products list at the time set for opening of bids (see 4.3 and 6.4). 3.2 Material. The abrasive material shall be manufactured as required to produce a product which is uniform, homogeneous, noncaking, and fr
23、ee flowing, in full conformance with the requirements of this specification. Also, the abrasive material which contains specific agents such as organic matter, asbestos, and wollastonite and pectolite minerals, and actinolite and tremolite minerals, water soluble and toxic substances (except as allo
24、wed by this specification), or other extraneous materials and entirely suitable for the purpose intended shall be appropriately documented.
