、I INCH-POUND I A-A-5 942 3 21 May 1999 COMMERCIAL ITEM DESCRIPTION VACUUM INTERFACE VALVE FOR SHIPBOARD USE The General Services Administration has authorized the use of this commercial item description for all federal agencies. 1. SCOPE 1.1 Scope. This Commercial Item Description (CID) covers vacuu
、m interface valves used with sewage vacuum, collection, holding, and transfer (VCHT) systems aboard ships. Vacuum interface valves control the discharge from urinals to the sewage vacuum collection piping. Although the requirements of this CID primarily refer to vacuum interface valves used with uri
、nals, they may be applied to the acquisition of vacuum interface valves intended for use with other plumbing waste sources such as shower or galley drains. 2. SALIENT CHARACTERISTICS 2.1 Description. The vacuum interface valve (VIV) consists of an enclosure containing a discharge valve, liquid level
、 sensing control assembly, vacuum check valve, interconnecting tubing, pipe, and couplings with hose clamps connecting the vacuum interface valve to the soil drain line. 2.2 Materials. The valve components shall be constructed of corrosion resisting materials. 2.3 Vacuum interface valve operation. 2
、.3.1 Automatic operation. Activation and operation of the VIV shall be fully automatic during normal operation. Flushing water from manually initiated flushometers or other sources flows through gravity drain piping to the VIV. The hydrostatic pressure of the rising flushing water level acti- vates
、the VIV control mechanism which opens the discharge valve and allows the accumulated flushing water to be drawn into the sewage vacuum collection piping. The VIV controls activate and deactivate the flushing water discharge process. The controls shall operate pneumatically using only vacuum pressure
、 available from the soil pipe connected to the sewage VCHT system. No electrical connections are permitted for activation or operation of the VIV. A check valve or other means shall be provided to prevent contaminating the VIV controls with sewage. The VIV discharge valve shall normally remain open
、for approximately 3 seconds. However, where the volume of flushing water is large, the vacuum interface valve shall cycle continuously until the flow is passed. Operation of the vacuum interface valve shall be smooth with no chattering due to discharged flushing water pressure and flow surges and op

Means shall be provided to manually control the discharge valve to discharge the waste water to the sewage collection piping in th
、e event of an inoperative vacuum interface valve control or inadequate vacuum pressure. 2.4 Discharge valve. The discharge valve shall be a pneumatically power- operated tubular diaphragm valve. The valve shall automatically close upon loss of system vacuum or failure of the valve operating mechanis
、m. The tubular diaphragm shall be made of neoprene rubber. 2.5 Inlet and discharge connections. The vacuum interface valve waste inlet and discharge will be connected to shipbuilder supplied 1-1/2 inch nps soil pipe. The connection shall be made by a straight neoprene rubber coupling. Both ends of t
、he coupling shall be securely clamped with stainless steel worm drive hose clamps. The connections shall not leak. 2.5.1 When specified (see 6.5), 90-degree elbow couplings shall be provided. 2.5.2 Unless otherwise specified (see 6.5), VIV inlet and discharge connections shall be as shown on figure
、1. 2.6 Valve enclosure. The VIV enclosure shall be made of corrosion resistant material such as stainless steel or plastic as specified (see 6.5), and provided with a covered access for maintenance. Enclosure dimensions shall be as given on figure 1. 2.6.1 The VIV shall be installed foot mounted or
、supported by the adjoining piping as specified (see 6.5). 2.7 Performance. 2.7.1 Vacuum. The VIV shall operate connected to a soil or plumbing waste drain line that is under vacuum ranging from 14 to 18 inches of mercury (Hg). 2.7.2 Minimum vacuum. The VIV shall operate at a minimum vacuum of 9 inch
、es H9 . 2.7.3 Flushing water. The flushing water shall be fresh water. When specified (see 6.5), flushing water shall be seawater. Where installed in galley drains the VIV shall pass galley food waste pulper discharge solids. 2.7.4 Endurance. The VIV shall operate by automatic operation for a minimu
、m of 150,000 cycles with no failures or leaks. 2.7.5 Shock. When specified, (see 6.5), the VIV shall be shock tested and shall withstand the shock requirements for deck mounted equipment in accordance with MIL-S-901. 2.7.6 Airborne noise. When specified, (see 6.5),the VIV shall meet the grade B nois
、e requirements of MIL-STD-470-1 during automatic operation. 2.8 Workmanship. Parts shall be of first class workmanship and shall be free from defects of manufacture which detract from their appearance or impair their serviceability. 2.9 Metric products. Products manufactured to metric dimensions wil
、l be considered on an equal basis with those manufactured using inch-pound units, provided they fall within the tolerances specified using conversion tables contained in the latest revision of FED-STD-376, and all other requirements of this Commercial Item Description are met. If a product is manufa
