Change Notice: Reissued as MPAPS; Incorporation of Appendix; Editorial changes 1.0 APPLICATION This specification applies to gears, shafts and forgings valve stems and other parts made of medium carbon or alloy steels that require hardened cases. Flame and induction hardening
5、are less expensive means for achieving hardened case microstructures on suitable parts to achieve improved wear resistance, torsional and bending strength and fatigue life. 2.0 SCOPE This specification covers the Companys requirements for the properties of hardened cases produced by flame or inducti
6、on hardening. All properties shown refer to finished parts. 2.1 Restricted Chemical Substances Effective January 1, 2007, all product supplied to the requirements of this specification must comply with the requirements of the MPAPS B-50 specification. 3.0 REFERENCE DOCUMENTS Unless otherwise specifi
7、ed, the latest issue of all referenced standards shall apply. The following Specifications, Standards, and Regulations are referenced in this specification. 8、ring Design Std A-16 NAVISTAR MPAPS B-50 4.0 REQUIREMENTS Flame and induction hardened grades or parts are classified by the depth of the hardened surface zone and the surface hardness. 4.1 Hardened Depth Eleven classes which define the hardened depths are shown in Table I. (2) The maximum hardened depth as defined herein must not exceed 50% of the radius of cylindrical solid parts, or for hollow shafts,
12、the maximum case depth will not exceed 50% of the wall thickness unless otherwise specified. For other shapes the hardened depth should not exceed 50% of the cross section unless otherwise indicated. If hardened from both sides the maximum hardened depth from one side should not exceed 25% of the cr
13、oss section. This is difficult or impossible on parts with small section sizes such as some gear teeth or shifter pads. If such a condition exists this must be negotiated with the supplier. (3) Obsolete Class 10 4.1.1 Flame or induction hardened depth is defined, unless otherwise specified, as the p
14、erpendicular distance from the specified surface to a point having a hardness equivalent to Rockwell C 40. 4.1.2 When it is deemed necessary to specify a hardened depth other than as defined by Rockwell C 40, that hardness will be shown in parentheses following the class designation as follows: 4.1.
15、3 Navistar Class 60 (RC 35) means the perpendicular distance from the surface to a point having a hardness equivalent to Rockwell C 35 will be 1.50 mm (0.060 in.) minimum. 4.1.4 See “Methods of Test,” for methods for determining hardened depths. 4.1.5 Hardness at other points below the surface may b
16、e specified in special cases. See Appendix, “Selection of Hardness Gradients” for further information. 4.1.6 Since this specification refers only to case depth of finished parts, it may be necessary to produce cases deeper than those specified herein to compensate for stock removed during grinding o
17、r other manufacturing processes. 4.2 Surface Hardness 4.2.1 Location of the required surface hardness and induction or flame hardened depth class must be clearly shown on drawings. See “Designation on Drawings,” and “Appendix General Design Information” for guidance. 4.2.2 Where the hardening pattern ends, a transition zone of lower hardness may occur, especially in cold worked or prehardened material. If hardness limits in the transition zone are critic
20、al, these limits must be negotiated between the supplier and product engineering and shown on the drawing. 4.3 Gear Teeth Contour Hardened Contour hardening of gear teeth is recommended for optimum strength. However, it not required unless shown on the drawing. Contour hardening may require preheat,
21、 particular induction frequencies, special quenches or steel hardenabilities which may be expensive or not readily available. See “Appendix General Information” for further discussion. When it is required the drawing will read “contour hardening required.” This notation requires that a hardness trav
22、erse from the OD through the center of the tooth taken on a cross section midway between faces will not exceed Rockwell C 50 at the percent of the whole depth of tooth as shown in Table II on page 4. If the percent of the whole tooth depth is exceeded for 4.5 to 6.0 diametral pitch gears, the gears
23、must be shot peened to an intensity of 0.010-0.014 A, 100% coverage, S-230 shot with a hardness of Rockwell C 58-62. In no case will the hardened depth exceed 110% of the tooth height.
